Do you watch 3D Blu-ray movies on Quest? I could use some help testing MVC playback

Bit of a niche one, but I’m hoping the right people see this.

I’m one of the developers behind NEX. We added MVC playback last week, and it can now play MVC files directly from USB drives and SMB shares too.

MVC is the format used by 3D Blu-rays. NEX can now play those files directly from USB drives or SMB shares, without converting them or copying them to the headset. It works with our setups, but we only have a couple of drives and network configurations to test with.

I already have a few people testing it, but I’d still like to try it with more setups. Different USB drives, NAS boxes and home networks can all behave differently.

So, if this is actually how you watch 3D movies, I could use your help.

Just let me know which Quest you have and whether you use USB or SMB. Drive format, NAS model, anything like that is useful, but I’m not asking for a lab report.

NEX is free to download here, although the free version is limited to five minutes of playback per day:

https://vr.meta.me/s/2bPeowmt1Ftg0Mb

Five minutes is enough to test a file, but not really enough to poke around and find problems. So I’m happy to unlock full access for a few people who already use MVC and want to put it through a real test. No review needed, and you don’t have to post anything about it.

My friend tried our Quest video player and immediately said, “This looks different.”

Okay, I know this might sound a little narcissistic and fluffy, especially coming from one of the developers, but I still feel like not enough people have tried our player.

I’m one of the developers behind NEX, a video player for Quest.

I let a friend try it recently, and her first reaction was basically:

“Oh wow, this doesn’t look or feel like a typical video player.”

That made me pretty happy.

We’ve spent a lot of time on playback features, but the design has always mattered to us too. Video players can get cluttered pretty quickly once you add different formats, network sources, subtitles, 3D settings, and everything else. We wanted NEX to handle all of that without feeling like a technical tool.

It can play videos from the Quest, USB drives, PCs, and network storage. It supports both 2D and 3D video, including MVC files used by 3D Blu-rays. NEX Link also lets you stream videos from your computer and convert regular 2D videos into 3D.

This video is just a quick look at the UI as it is now.

I’m obviously biased, but I still really like how it turned out.

NEX is free to download and try here:

https://www.meta.com/en-gb/experiences/nex-next-gen-video-player/25092971956976708/

Feel free to try it and let me know what you think, including any features you’d like to see. We’re still moving pretty quickly with development, so this is a good time to tell us what you want from the player.

I built this to watch iPhone videos on Quest without copying files. Looking for testers

Hey everyone, I'm the developer behind NEX Player, a VR video player for Meta Quest.

I built NEX Link iOS because I kept running into the same problem myself: I had videos on my phone, but getting them onto Quest was always a hassle.

Usually it means: copying files somewhere, managing storage, or moving things between devices before you can actually watch them.

I wanted a simpler way.

NEX Link iOS lets you share videos from your iPhone to NEX Player over the same Wi-Fi. No computer needed, and no need to store those videos on your Quest. Just keep your videos on your phone and open them in VR when you want.

If you already use NEX Player, NEX Link iOS can make your personal video workflow a lot easier. If you haven't tried NEX Player yet, you can download it for free from the Store.

This is the first iOS version of NEX Link, and I’m opening a small TestFlight test to see how people actually use it.

If you watch videos on Quest, I’d love to hear about your setup. Maybe you keep everything on your phone, maybe you use a PC, NAS, or something else. I’m curious what workflows people have today and what would make this experience better. Feel free to throw your thoughts.

If you’d like to try it, here it is:

https://testflight.apple.com/join/NvRScwzR

Thanks for helping me test NEX Link iOS. Any comments or suggestions are very welcome.

A user asked for this feature in our player five months ago. I finally got to say yes.

Hey, I’m one of the developers behind NEX, a video player for Quest.

About five months ago, I posted an early version here and someone left a very simple comment:

“MVC support?”

If you’re wondering what that is, MVC is the video technology used for 3D Blu-ray. It stores a separate view for each eye.

Actually, we’d already kicked the idea around internally at that time, but it turned out to be a lot more work than it sounds, so it sat on our to-do list for a while.

We finally shipped it. NEX can now play MVC 3D files directly without converting them to SBS or TB first. So there’s no re-encoding, no second giant copy of the movie, and no extra quality loss from converting it again.

I went back to that old comment today and finally got to reply:

“Yep, it’s supported now.”

No idea if they still need it, but honestly, that felt pretty good.

If anyone wants to check it out, NEX is free to download and try here:

https://www.meta.com/experiences/nex-next-gen-video-player/25092971956976708/

We’ll keep working on NEX and adding the features people actually ask for.

Meta added 2D-to-3D to Quest Gallery. As a video player developer, I have mixed feelings.

I’m one of the developers behind NEX, a video player for Quest.

I’ve spent months making 2D-to-3D conversion faster and designing a minimal experience that feels more like pressing play than using a technical tool.

Seeing Meta bring it directly into Gallery gives me mixed feelings. It’s great for users and validates the idea, but I have to admit it also feels a little surreal after spending so long working on the same problem.

I’m not claiming ours is better, instant conversion may already be good enough for most people. NEX also has a minimal UI and photorealistic environments which I'm proud of, but honestly, I do have mixed feelings.

What I’m genuinely wondering is: where should dedicated Quest video players go from here?

Better 3D quality? Direct PC/NAS playback? Subtitles and wider format support? More immersive environments? Or, if Gallery handles the basics, is a dedicated player becoming unnecessary?

I’d really like to hear how other Quest users see it.

What’s your biggest pet peeve with VR video players?

Nex Player

One thing I’ve seen people complain about with VR video players is how fast the controls can turn into a cockpit.

Too many buttons, too many panels, too many tiny settings nobody asked for. And somehow the one thing you actually need, is still buried in a menu.

That’s kind of why I’ve been making my app, NEX Player, more minimal. I just wanted it to feel clean once you’re actually watching something, instead of feeling like you’re managing a control panel the whole time.

The screenshot is one small example. It’s a mini bar I made so you can jump back home or see what’s playing without opening the full panel. Though a few users told me they still prefer the usual top-left back button though, so I’m thinking about adding a traditional option too.

I’ve gotten some feedback already, but people here sometimes point out stuff I would never think of.

For people who actually watch videos in VR, what’s your biggest pet peeve with VR players?

P.S. I know “support more formats” is a big one. I’m working on that too, but I’m also curious about other stuff people run into.

How long would you wait for 2D to 3D video conversion?

I have a VR video player that can convert 2D videos into 3D, and I’m trying to get a better feel for what people actually expect from that feature speed-wise.

The clip is one of the cinema environments already in the player, but let’s be honest, at least for my player, I know a lot of people are probably interested because of the 2D to 3D feature.

I know nobody wants to stare at a conversion progress bar all day. Faster is always better.

But there’s still a tradeoff between speed, quality, and what the hardware can realistically handle. Real-time conversion on Quest is still a tough problem.

So for people who actually like watching 3D videos in VR, whether that’s movies, anime, or random clips, what would feel reasonable?

A few minutes? Half the video length? Same as the video length?

Or would you basically write it off unless it was instant?

Need your advice: how can we make customizable playback shortcuts more useful?

Hi everyone,

Dev of NEX Player here. I wanted to ask for some honest advice from people who use VR video players.

NEX Player has a feature that lets you customize the shortcuts on the playback panel. Basically, you can put the settings you use the most right on the main control panel, instead of digging into deeper menus every time.

For example, you can add quick access to things like playback speed, loop / playback order controls, and other settings you often use.

We thought this would be pretty useful, especially in VR, where even a few extra clicks can break the flow a bit. But we noticed that people do not really mention this feature much, so I am wondering if we just did not make it obvious enough, or if it is not something most users actually care about.

I would really love to hear your thoughts. Do you find this kind of customization useful in a VR video player? And if not, what would make quick controls feel more helpful?

Small complaints, suggestions, or real use cases are all welcome. We are trying to understand this from actual users instead of just guessing from our side.

Thanks in advance. Your feedback really helps us improve the player.

2D to 3D conversion is no longer limited to NVIDIA GPUs

Hello everyone,

Previously, the 2D to 3D conversion feature was mainly available for NVIDIA GPU users. After receiving feedback from users with AMD, Intel, and other non NVIDIA Windows PCs, I spent the past few weeks working on broader GPU support.

The latest version of NEX now supports 2D to 3D conversion beyond NVIDIA GPUs.

Get NEX on the Meta Quest Store:

If you’re using an AMD, Intel, or other non NVIDIA Windows PC, I’d love for you to try it and share your feedback.

I wanted more reasons to use my VR headset, so I built this

I honestly think 3D movies are one of the best uses of VR.

But most of the stuff I actually want to watch is still regular 2D video.

So I built NEX, with a PC tool that converts 2D videos into 3D with one click.

You convert the video on PC, then watch the 3D version in the headset with NEX Player.

No subscription. Just a one time purchase with lifetime access.

I made a short video showing the conversion flow. Would love to hear what movies or videos people would want to try in 3D.
