Airlink vs Link cable

Hello guys, ive had a standalone quest for about 2,5 years now and airlink has become ok enough for me to start exploring pcvr. But i have the budget to get a long link cable now so ive been wondering if link cable is still better then airlink? If it is, then my other question would be if i can just get any usb-c 3.0 cable as a link cable or if i need something special. Thanks either way for your help!!

How I Turned an Ordinary Diesel Generator Room into a Psychedelic Serpentarium

In my previous post, I talked about the major struggles and small victories I faced while building the locomotive cabin level. It’s probably worth mentioning again that Dark Trip is an Escape Room-style game being developed for both PC and VR. And in VR especially, atmosphere is everything.

Since I’m a solo developer handling the level design, visual art, implementation, programming, sound, and… well, basically everything (though not without help from a colleague and friends!), not every idea works perfectly on the first try. Sometimes the flaws only become obvious later — especially after creating newer levels where the style and atmosphere feel much more refined. Going back to older content after that can be a painful experience. Some levels just stop feeling as interesting as they once did.

One of those levels was the “Generator Room.”

Overall, the level itself was decent. But the “under the pills” mode (where the player takes a mysterious substance that lets them see things hidden from them in a normal state) felt a bit underwhelming. Especially compared to the newer areas. Players noticed it too: not enough snakes, not enough horror, not enough hallucination-fueled madness.

Either way, it was time to revisit the level and push it further.

The first — and easiest — thing to tackle was the lighting. As usual, I spent far too long tweaking colors and effects trying to find the most aggressively psychedelic setup possible. In the end, I couldn’t decide which version worked best, so I simply blended several of my favorites together with smooth transitions. Honestly, I think it added exactly the right amount of insanity.

The second step was updating the wall textures. Well… “simple” is maybe the wrong word. Rotate the level, experiment in Photoshop, import it into the game, check it in VR, back to Photoshop, repeat endlessly. Technically straightforward, but incredibly time-consuming if you actually want it to look good. In the end, the walls became covered in scales and strange messages promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Third came the new environmental details. Again, not especially difficult in theory: walk through the level, feel the atmosphere, figure out what’s missing… and then create an oyster-octopus creature hanging from the ceiling. Naturally fully animated, with tentacles spreading across the ceiling, dangling down, twitching and crawling around. And while I was at it, I added more tentacles to the walls too. They poke out and move as well. There should be life everywhere.

The fourth and final piece was the sound design. Psychedelic booming noises, hissing snakes, shifting sand, distant wind… and the voice of a girl calling for a healthy lifestyle.. By the way, will you be able to understand what she says and translate it from German?

And that’s pretty much it! The “under the pills” version of the level turned out strange, oppressive, and unsettling — exactly the way I wanted it. I’m really curious to see how players react to it.

P.S. Dark Trip is currently available in Early Access on the Meta Store, so if you want to experience all this with your own eyes and ears, now’s the perfect time.
The game is also preparing for release on Steam

Best First Encounters-like games?

Could you recommend some AR/MR game(s) for Quest 3 that:

  • are single player-centric
  • have objects interacting with walls & furniture, bouncing off tables/chairs/sofas etc.
  • do not require lots of space (Tea for God)
  • do not have zombies

Quest 3 vs Steam Frame

I have a Quest 2 and was excited for my next jump to Steam Frame.

Most reviewers who have tried Steam Frame always end their videos by saying that Quest 3 is for casual VR gaming, while Steam Frame is for PCVR. My problem with this statement is that I already play SteamVR on my Quest using a cable, because I hate Air Link, and Half-Life: Alyx looks great.

So I think Quest 2/3 are already PCVR headsets, since they can run their own standalone games and also PCVR through SteamVR, including Steam VR games and even non-VR Steam games.

The reason I am excited about Frame is basically the weight.

Quest 3 is around 550 grams, with most of that weight focused in the front, sitting on your face. Steam Frame is 440 grams, but the weight is divided differently. Only around 200 grams or less is on your face, while the rest is in the back of your head, mainly the battery, so it should feel much lighter on the face.

The second advantage is that with the mini Steam router/dongle, there is no need for a cable anymore, which is nice.

But the issue is that most reviewers who tried Steam Frame say it will be good for around 2 to 2.5 hours on battery, while my Quest on cable basically runs forever because the cable is also charging the headset.

Also, Quest 3 is around $600, while Steam Frame seems to be aiming around $800 to $850.

I don’t know, but it feels like Quest 3 might still be the better purchase for PCVR regardless. Or is there something I am missing?

Edit: I am thankful for some of the useful answers here , but the amount if downvotes is crazy, is this subreddit supposed to be only crying about when frame will be available?

Among Giants VR - Initial Impressions - I was blown away

I bought this game yesterday during the current "Play All Day" Meta sale for $10.99 USD (40% off). I had never heard of this game before. It was actually listed on the sale page near the bottom of the page. I was just persistent in looking for a good game. It was not featured on the sale page, which is shocking after having played it for a little bit.

This is not meant as a review. I only played for about an hour. However, I was blown away in my initial impressions by the game. The game doesn't hold your hand. It even has an alien language that you sort of have to figure out how to decrypt. However, if you're an experienced gamer and can be observant, it should not be a problem for you. The only negative I have is the bow & arrow mechanics. It's not bad, but it's also not "In Death" good either.

Anyways, I don't want to hype up the game too much, but again, I was blown away in my initial impressions. As a PCVR veteran, that rarely happens, especially at this price point. You get to glide in the air, ride a horse, use a grappling hook ... looking forward to what other secrets the game holds.

Will Question 3 help with my eye strain?

Hello everyone. I have a Quest 2 and I get a lot of eye strain. I’ve adjusted all the settings and the fitting but eye strain headaches starts within 10 minutes. It’s like my eyes totally know they are focusing an inch from my face. My son and my sister who I play with say their eyes focus on distant things as if they are actually distant. My question is will upgrading to quest 3 help with the eye strain? Has anyone ever had this situation? Eye strain solved by upgrading? I don’t want to get into a situation where I just have more expensive eye strain.

Edit: just happened to have an eye doctor appointment today so I discussed this with him. He said I had convergence insufficiency and he gave me some exercises and he says you can make your eye muscles stronger. If that doesn’t work within a month, I can use some low level readers underneath my headset. In the meantime he said that eye strain is not damaging my eyes, so that’s good.

Meta link keeps saying I'm under minimum specs and possibly limiting my frames after GPU upgrade

Yesterday I upgraded my GPU from a 5700 XT (8GB) to a RTX 5070 (12GB) to which Meta Link now keeps telling me my PC is under minimum specs and my fps stays at a constant 45 even after disabling Asynchronous Spacewarp (ASW)

My old card gave me at least 60 to 70 fps in basic VRChat worlds when disabling ASW (it kept enabling itself every time I started the software) yet this new card just sits at 45 regardless of ASW being disabled which is why I'm so confused

Anyone know a fix for this at all? If more info is needed just ask

If it means anything I'm currently running the 5070, i7-14700k and 64GB ram with a Quest Pro for face tracking on VRChat

Thanks ❤️

Best pickle ball game with active community?

I want to play pickle ball on my quest and there are like a million pickle ball games so I am not sure which to buy.

I would prefer one with the best gameplay obviously, but just as importantly an active playerbase to play with.

From my cursory search it seems like Racket Club might be my best option, but most posts about this subject are at least a year or two old so I am not sure how relevant the advice is.

Hoping for some help troubleshooting my Quest 2.

Hey all, I use my quest 2 relatively infrequently (2-4 times a month) usually to watch movies or other media in bed or laying on a couch, etc.

Yesterday I went to use it, and it just refuses to re-center properly when I hold down the meta button, or use the software button to re-center.

I tested it across multiple programs, video players, etc. It will re-center on the horizontal axis but not the vertical axis. What's even weirder, is it will re-center the overlay popup type window (like the one where you just quick press the meta button), but only that.

I've spent a couple hours now reading troubleshooting tips and trying to implement those, I've redrawn the boundary, gone to a different room and removed and redrawn the boundary, all of the stuff. I've tried recommendations from Google Gemini and Grok, to no avail.

I'm fairly certain it's update related, as the UI is a quite bit different from the last time I've used it. I haven't dropped or it anything like that, so I don't think its like a broken gyro or anything along those lines.

The last troubleshooting option a lot of the guides gave was to do a factory reset and see if that resolves the problems. I would VERY much like to avoid this unless it is quite literally the last option.

Any help would be appreciated, anything else I can try etc!

Thank you 😄

[HELP] "60-Second Stutter" in PCVR (Virtual Desktop + Quest 3) - Exhausted All Standard Troubleshooting

Hi everyone, I am losing my mind over a consistent stutter (micro-freeze for ~0.5s) every 60 seconds when using Virtual Desktop with my Quest 3. This happens inside the VR, not on the pc monitor, as long as VD is connected to the headset.

The Symptoms:

  • Occurs exactly every 60 seconds.
  • VD Performance Overlay shows stable numbers (Game/Encode/Network/Decode) even during the stutter, except for the FPS that drops for the splisecond.
  • Happens even when the PC is idle (desktop), ruling out game-specific issues.
  • SteamVR is stutter-free, but looks so bad compared to Virtual Desktop.

Some of what I have already tried and hasn't affected it in the slightest (there has been much more but I forget):

  • VR: Changing the bitrate, graphics quality, Codec, Video buffering (basically every single VD setting)
  • Windows/OS: Disabled HAGS, disabled Game Mode, disabled background scanning, checked Task Scheduler for periodic triggers, Updated BIOS, Updated chipset, disabled C-States in BIOS, disabled USB Selective Suspend, disabled TPM, Windows performance recorder/analyzer, LatencyMon.
  • Networking: Disabled WLAN AutoConfig, router is an AXE75, PC is wired via Ethernet, Quest 3 is the only device on the network.
  • NVIDIA/Drivers: Clean DDU wipe and driver reinstall, set RTX 4080 to MSI (Message Signaled Interrupts) mode, forced GPU interrupts to specific cores using Interrupt Affinity Tool.
  • Software/Services: Clean boot, removed monitoring software, disabled overlays, tested with/without process lasso cpu affinity.

I have maxed out my Gemini Pro tokens every day for the past 3 weeks exclusively for help troubleshooting but I have exhausted everything it could think of. If you have any other ideas/solutions or are experiencing the same, I'd love some help.

Cheers.

Is this a good deal for a used Quest 2?

Hello! I've never had a vr but i wanted to dive into this world, though im not exactly able to buy a quest 3 money wise. I would use it mostly for PCVR. I found an offer for 190e of a quest 2 kept in perfect state + bobo vr m2 plus + 5m link cable and a portable case to keep everything. I've done some research and this looks like a decent deal since the 3s wouldn't be useful since idc about standalone usage, but I wanted to ask u guys for a more complete view anyway 🙏
