Smooth Shopping Cart

I just went grocery shopping and encountered a shopping cart that was particularly smooth. It didn’t look like anything special; had a few rusty screws and mismatched colors. But oh boy, what a nice glide. It’s a shame I had to let it go this morning. Have a nice and smooth weekend everyone!

Starting the weekend with Lady Day & Co.

Oh man, what a gorgeous record...

Nothing quite like late-era Billie Holiday with a small group of jazz all stars. This album is her first of three to include Ben Webster, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Barney Kessel, Jimmy Rowles. So chill, so beautiful. Acoustic Sounds Series is typically out of my preferred budget, but they do such an excellent job that occasionally I’ll splurge with my favorite LPs.

Have a nice weekend everyone, happy spinning 🎵

Quality > Quantity Book Recommendations?

Hi Minimalists! As the title says, I’m in search of book recommendations with the topic of “Quality > Quantity.” I Googled, and searched this subreddit, but didn’t see anything that really stood out. So why not make a post. Thanks in advance

What’s the ideal amount of records in your collection?

Happy weekend y’all! As I was organizing some records today, I started to think about ideal record collection size… It’s that classic debate: quality vs quantity. On one hand, it’s fun to explore and expand my collection with new pickups. On the other hand, a smaller collection allows me to really spend time with select records and get to know the music better. So a poll! Why not. What’s the ideal amount of records in your collection?

Today’s pickups

Day off = visiting my favorite local-ish record shop, Human Head Records in Brooklyn, NY. Plus I got a bonus discount and free gift, super nice of them. Some of this is 100% jazz, some jazz adjacent, and some just out there… These pickups put a big smile on my face, so I figured why not share. Happy listening y’all

Jazz records from my dad

Spun these four beauties today. Scratches on the vinyl and beat up sleeves, but these well-loved records still sound great. Sometimes a bit of crackle but no skips! Very glad my dad introduced me to jazz years ago and that I received some gems from his collection. Happy Father’s Day y’all 🎵

RIP Abdullah Ibrahim AKA Dollar Brand

He’s in my top 5 jazz piano list. Creative, unique and soulful player. 91 years is a good, long life. Grateful we are left with a good, long discography as well. RIP ❤️

Quick & Easy String Trimmer Line Reloading

In the market for a new Ryobi string trimmer for my less than 1/4 acre yard. Because I’m pretty tired and a bit lazy, my main goal is quick and easy line reloading. And also a model that doesn’t run out of line too quickly… I assume I’ll get these benefits with the pre-cut line kits and a bump-feed head, but wanted to double check with Reddit first. The model can be any weight, price (I always appreciate cheaper, but will pay more for quality/ease) and either 18v or 40v (I have a mix of the batteries). Open to suggestions, thank you in advance!

2 Giants! 💙💚

Obligatory post! Tonight I’m listening to Kind of Blue (2010) and 3 Giants! (1964) (AKA Sonny Rollins Plus 4). The look of these album covers blend quite well in my opinion. After my wonderful visit to Harlem yesterday and the positive response on r/Jazz, I had to say hello to my favorite sub r/Vinyl_Jazz. RIP Sonny and Happy 100 Miles 💚💙

Visited Harlem today

As most of us know, today is the 100th birthday of the cool Miles Davis. But last night gave us a colossal loss… Sonny Rollins died. RIP to a legend and the last living member of A Great Day in Harlem, a world famous photo of 57 iconic jazz musicians taken by Art Kane for Esquire magazine in 1958.

This afternoon I decided to take a work break, bought some flowers and headed to the Great Day in Harlem location as an homage to Sonny, the other jazz musicians and to say thank you for the music.

After leaving the flowers, I see a lady come down the stairs to take a look. We start talking and she’s been the building owner since 1999. Luckily she’s also a jazz fan and somehow I was the first to tell her the news of Sonny’s passing (who she always wanted to meet). She met Benny Golson a few years back, as well as Bill Clinton and various others. We spoke about Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Mary Lou Williams, Gene Krupa, Etta Jones, Duke Ellington, Gerry Mulligan, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus and many others. It was lovely to hear many of her stories.

At the end, she gave me a small postcard of the famous picture and invited me to come back with my dad (who introduced me to jazz + he saw Sonny live in NYC in the 60s). This little postcard just became one of my favorite possessions.

Thanks for reading, just felt like sharing. I hope y’all are enjoying lots of Miles and Sonny records this week.

A Polk Poll (A Pollk?)

Hello there, I recently moved into a larger space which means… audio upgrade!

I currently listen to vinyl Audio Technica AT-LP3XBT turntable with the upgraded AT-VMN95E stylus (the green one). I want to replace my Edifier R1700BT active speakers with a dedicated amp and some passive bookshelf speakers. I’m pretty set on the Yamaha A-S501 (I can get this at $400 new). For the speakers, I’m leaning toward new Polks (I can get around 37% off), but still figuring out which specific model. For context my listening room is rather small (10 feet x 10 feet) and unless thoroughly persuaded, I plan on putting these on ear-level wall-mounted shelves (not speaker stands, sorry!) I might upgrade more in the future: subwoofer, preamp, fancy red stylus, etc. I might even add a CD player or tuner, but never any streaming in the room for me. But for now my budget is allowing me the Yamaha amp and a pair of Polks.

With all of that said, which of these 4 options would you choose? If you want to chat about why/a particular speaker, feel free to comment. I am open to discuss and learn!
