If you or your family follow some spiritual groups, verify its past. My disillusionment with Sathya Sai Baba

Since this sub has a lot of people who might be spiritually inclined and can dissect such phenomenon, I'm discussing this topic here.

Sathya Sai Baba was a prominent twentieth century godman who claimed to be an omniscient divine avatar and gathered millions of followers worldwide. He built a vast empire that established free supra specialty hospitals, clean drinking water projects, and top tier educational institutions while promoting human values and selfless service.

My own upbringing was deeply tied to this ecosystem through Balvikas classes, where I learned the Ramayanam, Mahabharatam, Bhagavad Gita, and numerous Shlokams. Sincere ladies who were mostly homemakers (Appointed as Balvikas Gurus) told us stories of our great saints, high spiritual concepts like getting rid of Shad Ripu, Nava vidha Bhakti and showing how pure love for the divine supersedes rigid rituals, while instilling a deep respect for all spiritual paths.

However, the foundation of this empire rested on verified trickery. His claims of materializing vibhuti, gold chains, and rings out of thin air have been thoroughly exposed on platforms like YouTube as simple magician sleight of hand. It is ironic considering his famous statement that his creations were the result of his divine Siddha Sankalpa, yet the creator of the universe apparently spent his time pulling off cheap parlor tricks to impress followers.

The ugly reality behind the scenes is far more sinister. There are numerous accounts, both anonymous and on record from former students, detailing systemic sexual abuse, grooming, and inappropriate touching in locations like Puttaparthi and Brindavan. Former national leaders like Robert Priddy from Norway have documented how fair-skinned and attractive young men were specifically chosen for special access to his private quarters, while the organization actively covered up these incidents.

Where the contrast gets fascinating, especially for Tamil Brahmins, is in the realm of Vedam chanting. In many traditional homes, backward practices like treating daughters as untouchable during their periods are still maintained, while traditional mutts struggle with a shrinking population of Vedic scholars.

Meanwhile, an organization run by a conman welcomed women and foreign devotees, training them to chant complex Suktams with flawless pronunciation, intonation, and mastery of Sanskrit grammar rules like Sandhi. Initiatives by the Radio Sai team and programs like Samyukta Shruthi Sreni enabled women to chant with absolute devotion and precision.

How many traditional Dwijas today can match that level of dedication and accuracy?

It shows how a little inclusivity and kindness, freed from outdated taboos, can draw millions into a fold!

On one hand, there is a deep reverence for traditional orthodoxy and figures like Kanchi Mahaperiyavaa. On the other, it is extremely common to see Sathya Sai Baba's photograph placed right next to traditional deities on the same puja altar. To bridge this gap, a popular rumor is often passed around that Periyavaa once referred to SSB as "Kamakshi Swaroopam," effectively giving orthodox families spiritual permission to worship him.

Many people simultaneously patronize modern movements like Sathya Sai Baba, Isha Yoga, or Brahma Kumaris. We pride ourselves on scriptural adherence, yet easily fall for charismatic figures without questioning their background.

My own disillusionment happened suddenly when I stumbled upon a YouTube channel called Light of Truth out of sheer curiosity. That led me down a rabbit hole of investigative books, BBC documentaries like The Secret Swami, articles by rationalist Basava Premanand, and extensive blogs by former insiders. It was shocking to realize how much of this critical documentation has been systematically erased, suppressed, or legally challenged off the internet.

Coming out of this experience did not make me an atheist or destroy my love for Sanatana Dharma. Instead, it freed my faith. I still treasure the music, the Vedam chanting, and the noble stories of saints like Adi Shankara and Kannappa Nayanar that I learned as a child. But I no longer delegate my moral authority or spiritual journey to any self-proclaimed godman, mutt, or organization. Pure bhakti needs no middleman.

My experience with Sathya Sai organization- If you're a part of a spiritual organization/group, verify it's past.

Modern spiritual groups can be helpful in making us understand our religious customs and connect with the "Divine" better. Many of these popular groups are progressive, do a lot of social work and even have very sincere devotees. At the same time, the central figures go unquestioned and wrongdoings get brushed under the carpet. Here, I share my experience of one person I considered God since childhood.

For context for those unfamiliar with the movement, Sathya Sai Baba was one of India's most prominent 20th-century spiritual figures, claiming to be an omniscient divine avatar while building a vast global network of ashrams, free hospitals, and educational institutions centered on claims of performing physical miracles and teaching selfless service.

I grew up deep within the inner world of this organization. This was not a casual or distant belief for me. I spent my formative years attending Bal Vikas classes, learning and teaching Vedam chanting including Sri Rudram and Purusha Suktam, singing bhajans at weekly Samithi gatherings, joining hostel parayanams, and participating in Sevadal service drives. My social life, my musical training, my moral compass, and even my personal ideals were thoroughly entangled with the cultural ecosystem of Prasanthi Nilayam and Radio Sai.

My path to complete disillusionment started late one night when I randomly stumbled upon a YouTube channel called Light of Truth. I clicked out of pure curiosity and a desire to see if anything could actually challenge my deeply held faith. That single decision opened a door I could never close again.

I initially though that these films were created by the BBC and Westerners eager to pull down India and its rich spiritual fabric with false statements. It was deeply painful to eventually realize that those critical accounts were right all along.

I began searching deeper into material that the organization actively works to suppress online. I started reading the extensive blog posts written by Robert Priddy, a former university lecturer from Norway and former national coordinator for the Sathya Sai Organization. His detailed writings, documenting decades of insider experience, internal cover-ups, and structural deception, provided a rigorous framework for understanding what was really going on behind the scenes.

Following those leads, I read accounts and investigative work by rationalists like Basava Premanand, who demonstrated how the materialized vibhuti, rings, and gold chains were simply sleight of hand tricks. I looked into the personal testimonies of former students and major financial donors, and I watched documentary work such as the BBC film The Secret Swami.

As of today, many exposé articles, books and docuentaries are heavily suppressed or banned today, making them almost impossible to find on the open internet.

What shook me to my absolute core was not just the physical tricks, but the personal accounts of young men and former students who spoke out about persistent sexual harassment, inappropriate touching, and grooming that occurred behind closed doors. Realizing that these acts were committed by the central figure and quietly covered up by leaders destroyed the moral pedestal on which I had placed the entire movement.

The most difficult shift in perspective concerned the vast charitable network. For a long time, devotees use the free hospitals, water projects, and universities as proof of divine goodness. I now realize that every good action was carried out by the sincere effort, monetary donations, and selfless intent of ordinary individuals. The central figure does not deserve the credit for human goodness. Furthermore, donating or giving under that banner, even with pure intentions, ultimately propagates an organization that has systematically protected abusers and deceived millions.

Stepping away meant separating the human beings from the symbol. The good people I met, the music I learned, and the genuine friendships I formed were real, but they belonged to those individuals, not to the institution. I no longer need a guru, a central figure, or an organization to guide my morality.

Looking for German labs working on biomaterial-based neural regeneration

Hi everyone,

I'm applying for PhD positions in Germany and my long-term research interest is biomaterial-based neural regeneration, particularly:

  1. silk fibroin and ECM-based biomaterials

  2. injectable hydrogels or dissolvable implants

  3. spinal cord injury repair

  4. neural tissue engineering

  5. brain organoids integrated with biomaterials

I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have worked in these labs or know which PIs are supportive mentors, currently recruiting.

I know reddit isn't the best place, but apart from applying and cold emailing various PIs, I'm asking here as well.

24F Revathi 🌙 When will I get my dream PhD abroad?

I feel like life is downgrading everyday and I just have to tolerate it. Doing an unpaid internship in another city without much career benefits. The opportunities that came slipped away many times (not allowed to write clg exams in 2023, not allowed to attend PhD interview 2024, even after a senior scientist recommended me -still not allowed for job interview (3 months ago))... I feel like its a pattern. Things seem like working out only to be snatched away in the last moment.

Right now, I feel like even if I work hard, it's not going to favor me much, but staying idle is much worst.

Sleepless nights, migraines, loneliness, no money and no feeling stuck. All my efforts are for someone else (I'm at the very bottom of the hierarchy). I keep sending emails to prospective supervisors hoping for a PhD, internship or research opportunity, but the answer is almost always "no vacancy" or there is simply no reply at all.

I will strive to come out of this stuck phase by all means. Please help me - is this going to be the same, worse or much better for the rest of 2026 too?

I have so many dreams and goals, yet the only thing that's happening now is the death of ego, setbacks, delays, and just overwhelming emotions.

To add to all this, I got a terrible ankle sprain about a month ago, and now, more recently, painful blisters and injuries from a shoe bite exactly on my left foot.

Saturn is transiting Revathi now. Is this actually supposed to be a good phase or a difficult one? Is there hope for me?
