In March 2011 at the India Today Conclave in Delhi, a 21-year-old Kashmiri Pandit journalist, Aditya Raj Kaul, was invited to speak at the end of a session featuring hardline Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

What followed was a sharp, emotional confrontation. Kaul (whose family had fled the Valley when he was an infant) highlighted the Kashmiri Pandit exodus, the suffering of other communities, Geelani’s silence on killings by fellow separatists, and accused him of loyalty to Pakistan while promoting a culture of the gun.

He compared Geelani to a mirror image of Osama bin Laden talking about democratic space. Geelani’s responses (including the familiar claim that the Pandit exodus was a “conspiracy” by Governor Jagmohan) were met with boos and laughter from the audience.

This was the era when Pakistan, Kashmir, and terrorism dominated national conversation.
