A handy tool with many uses...

After I harvested an entire patch of yellow flag Iris, the thought of having to tie all the bundles together for drying was a bit daunting.

Then I remembered we had an old tool in the toolbox. The intention of the tool is for applying castrating bands to certain farm animals.

But, it is perfect when combined with tiny rubber bands, in order to quickly secure batches of fibers for basketry or cordage.

Dollar stores sell packages of tiny rubber bands intended for braiding hair. They are perfect for the banding tool. 🙂

Daylily dreads...

Our temperatures have been very high. As a result, there is certainly plenty of daylily foliage to pluck and make cordage from.

A nice project to work on while watching television. 🙃

Bread bowls

Disclaimer - I have not tried this recipe, but I keep losing it. I thought maybe if I posted it somewhere, I could find it when I need it. Ha!

Tim Horton’s Home-Made Italian-Style Bread Bowl

A thick, hearty soup goes best with these bread bowls! Try beef stew or potato soup! These bread bowls can be frozen for up to a month.

Ingredients

2 (.25 ounce) packages active dry yeast

2 1/2 cups warm water (110 degrees F)

2 tsp salt

2 tbsp vegetable oil

7 cups flour

1 tbsp cornmeal

1 egg white

1 tbsp water

Instructions

In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water. Leave it to sit about 10 minutes until creamy.

Add the salt, oil, and 4 cups of flour to the yeast and beat well. Stir in the remaining flour, about a 1/2 at a time, and beat well with an electric mixer after each addition.

Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it until it’s smooth.

Lightly oil a large bowl and place the dough in the bowl.

Turn the dough around to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and leave it to rise in a warm spot until it has doubled in size. (About 40 minutes.)

When the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal portions. Shape each portion into a 4 inch round loaf.

Place the loaves on slightly greased baking sheets that are sprinkled with cornmeal.

Cover the loaves and let them rise again in a warm spot until they’ve doubled in size. (About 30-40 minutes.)

Preheat your oven to 400 F.

In a bowl, beat together the egg white and 1 tbsp of water, and lightly brush the loaves with half of the egg wash.

Bake for 15 minutes, then brush with the remaining egg wash. Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until golden.

Cool on a wire rack.

To make the bowls, cut a 1/2 inch thick slice from the top of each loaf and scoop out centers. You should be left with 3/4 inch thick shells.

Fill the bread bowls with hot soup and serve immediately.

Yucca soaking - no thank you.

Today, I checked on the results of multi-day soaking for yucca leaves. I'm sorry, I've seen some beautiful works of art with yucca leaves, but apparently I am just not cut out for the stench of the soaking water.

I've smelled many bad things in my life, but there is no sense in having something like that smell intentionally hanging around the house.

I left the bucket in the woods, and I am definitely going to utilize better natural fibers. Phew!

Following prep instructions to the letter, but...

I have read my prep instructions numerous times, and just when I thought I had everything down, I find myself questioning whether they should redo their instructions, or if I just have reading comprehension issues.

The first half of the instructions are to drink 64 oz of prep solution between 5 and 7 on the evening before the procedure, followed by 32 additional ounces of plain water. Done.

The next instruction is to start the second half of prep 10 hours before scheduled PROCEDURE time, which is 10:30 a.m.

Patients must finish no later than 8 hours before scheduled PROCEDURE time.

Perfect, I must begin the second half at 12:30 a.m., and finish drinking by 2:30 a.m. that allows for 8 hours before scheduled PROCEDURE time.

Then further below, it reads "nothing in your mouth 8 hours before your procedure ARRIVAL time", which is 9:45 a.m.

So, I either need to consume the prep between 12:30 and 2:30, or between 12:30 and 1:45. ???

It is 1:52 a.m. obviously the office is not open.

Countdown to Monday morning...

Today today is Saturday, colonoscopy is 10:30 A.M. Monday morning.

I have been eating easy foods since Friday. Applesauce, chicken, mashed potatoes, white bread, small slices of cheese, broth with vermicelli noodles. I am freaking starving.

After such a diet yesterday, my morning BM had hardly any substance. I can only imagine what tomorrow and the next day will bring.

I am really not looking forward to this, but I am trying to look at the clock and think that in a matter of days or hours, it will be over.

My gastroenterologist has suggested the following prep:

Absolutely nothing but broth and clear liquids on Sunday, in addition to the prep.

64 oz of PEG, followed by 32 oz of water has to be consumed in 2 hours on Sunday evening, between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. .

Then, I have to consume 64 additional ounces of PEG between 12:30 and 1:45 a.m., and then absolutely positively definitely nothing, not even water, until after my procedure. I am not required to drink additional water after the second half of the jug.

I am thin, eat all the time, have a very fast metabolism, so I am afraid I may possibly faint.

If you wrote a book...

I have often thought it would be very therapeutic to write a book about my experience with my mother. The funny thing, though, is she has so many people snowed, they would not believe anything I wrote about the woman who behaves completely different around other people.

There are also some very specific incidents that have happened in my life that would absolutely give away who I was.

I know how Christina Crawford feels.

Elderly mother wants to cash out life insurance...

If you have seen the movie August Osage County, you have an idea of what kind of person my mother is.

My mother is way up there in age. She seems to be perfectly healthy, and is constantly on the go. I wouldn't be shocked if she lives to be a hundred.

Years ago, my father died. He always told us there were life insurance policies that would take care of my mother, and me and my siblings.

When he died, she gave us each an envelope with a shockingly small amount of money in it, and said that was the life insurance policy. We knew they had been paying on the policies since we were kids, so we were rather surprised at the tiny payout.

Prior to this, while he was on his deathbed, she had been shredding a lot of documents at the house. She receives money from many different sources, including his pension, Social Security benefits, and more. I have lost count the number of times she has said that she is spending our inheritance, and then she laughs about it, and has said things like she doesn't think there will be any money left.

She sold the house, and moved into nice housing for low income seniors. I don't know how she did it, but she was asking us to lie for her. We refused, and she somehow got in.

Is it her life? Yes.

Is it her money, yes.

I am not looking for an inheritance.

My concern is that even though she is healthy, she is making no provisions for her future. I would not be surprised if she outlives me. But the way she spends money, it is just horrendous. Now she is talking about being broke, and wants to cash in life insurance policies. I no longer know what kind of policies she holds, or how any of that works. She mentioned making payments on one, and the other is paid off. Again, I know nothing about these policies, or what it means.

I don't really know why I'm posting this. I guess I just need to get this out of my head. One sibling knows how she is, the other is just like her, but I really don't have anyone to talk to about this.

I have never asked her for money, or asked if I could borrow money. But it does sting a little bit when she asks how I am doing, and I might tell her a current situation, and then she turns right around in the same conversation to brag about new furniture, new craft machines, travel and vacation plans, etc.

My greatest fear is that she is going to blow through any and all money, and then all of a sudden, be knocking at my door. Remember the story about the grasshopper and the ants?

We have always had a strained relationship, so there is no sitting down to have a talk about this.

Thank you for listening.
