Planning on the HE1000 Unveiled - Connector Question

According to what I've read, the HE1KU comes with:

  • one single-ended 1.5m cable with 3.5 mm jack
  • one single-ended 3m cable with 6.35 mm jack
  • one balanced 3m cable with XLR jack

My DX340 has a 4.4 mm TRRS plug. So I guess I need an adapter or a new cable. I'm curious what other people use that works well.

I'm also kind of curious why Hifiman would not include what I thought of was a common connector for portable equipment.

Next Upgrade to DX340 Ti + AMP18 + HD600

I have this thing where I have to keep trying new things. I've had the DX340 for a few months now. I ran with the AMP15 and AMP16 for a while. The AMP18 should be in tomorrow. I use the DX340 with HD600 (love them) and DN242 (pretty good).

Next step, after 30 days with the AMP18 and my current headphones and IEMs I'm thinking a new headphone that will take better advantage of the AMP18 is the next step. I'm currently looking at the HIFIMAN HE1000 Unveiled. It strikes me as a huge upgrade to the HD600s and something that can take advantage of the AMP18's current capabilities. My concern is the exposed transducer and whether I can take good enough care of it while in use.

I'd appreciate any advice on <$3K headphones that specifically work well with the DX340+AMP18. Later down the road I might consider updating the DN242s but not the current plan.

Added: I use UAPP on the DX340 for Qobuz and local library. My musical tastes extend from NIN and Marilyn Manson to Pink Floyd and Roger Waters to Supertramp and James Taylor.

Too Much Background Noise (intended to be funny)

I recently bought the HD600 open back headphones. I was warned before purchase about noise problems but thought it might be a fleeting issue. There are times when these headphones sound beautiful. Then there are times where I'm interrupted by Amazon ads, Who on CSI, the donk sound on Law & Order and other random noises that sound like auctions on eBay.

It turns out that when I attempt to overcome the noise by increasing the volume, the noise increases shortly after and intrudes on my listening. I think I was able to isolate the source of the problem to my significant other but I can't seem to find a way to take care of the problem.

Suggestions appreciated.

(Sorry, got bored.)

Yubi OK with USB but not NFC

I'm able to get logged into Bitwarden app on my Android phone using my Yubi Security Key plugged into the USB port. But when I try NFC I get:

An error has occurred

NotReadableError: An unknown error occurred while talking to the credential manager.

It is two brand new Yubi Security Keys and both are giving me the same issue.

RESOLVED:

Not sure why, but I was sent to https://demo.yubico.com/ and tested the Security Key with USB and then with NFC. Then went back to Bitwarden and it worked with NFC.

Piano Notes FLAC or MP3?

This might sound like an odd request but I'm looking for a music file (flac preferably) of every key on a piano keyboard from end to end. I think I found something where every key is in a separate file and maybe I could combine that into a single file. But I'm hoping there's something ready-built.

My reason, just for fun, I'm thinking I could listen to this file on my different headphones and earphones. Maybe I could use it with an Eq tool to create a baseline for each phone. Then listen for a while and see how that works out for me.

The key to this is just for fun. I'm pretty new to all this, at least from the perspective of really listening to music and not just having it in the background. I thought, even if it fails, I might learn something from this experiment.

Have DAP, Looking for Headphones

I purchased the DX340 Ti and it just arrived today. It is my first DAP. For headphones, I'm using (very) old MDR-7506s and XBA-3s. These are, as I expected, almost OK. Both sound clear as bells but both lack that bass kick I enjoy.

My favorite song is Supertramp's School. When that kid screams and then the drums hit if I don't jump a little then it's not working for me. Bothe the MDR and the XBAs are soft in this respect. Again, not surprised.

Besides School, I get a kick out of:
Svanrand, Heilung
God's Gonna Cut You Down, Marilyn Manson
Money for Nothing, Dire Straits
Yuve Yuve Yu, The Hu
A Little Bit Off, Five Finger Death Punch

My tastes go way beyond this but I think this might show where I'm trying to go with a headphone purchase. I want to hear the drum kit if appropriate but not magnified if not.

Not sure if any of that makes sense. But if it does, what might I be looking at for headphones? From my reading I'm thinking the HifiMan Edition XV might work.

Besides the XVs I'm thinking the Arya Unveiled. Or maybe the closed-back HIFIMAN AUDIVINA which seem to be on sale at the moment.

Any suggestions? I feel like I'm all over the place and could use some help with focus.

Flip Flop Flip Flop Flip Flop... Trigger Pulled. Thank you!

I appreciate the group's patience with me going back and forth. All great advice. Some taken, some not.

In the end I decided on the iBasso DX340 Titanium purchased from Bloom Audio.

The trade off is that I have to postpone my headphone purchase so I'll be using some not-so-good options until I save for a pair to match the DX340.

Again, thanks for putting up with my questions and indecision. For me, it was stressful and fun!

No DAP, DAC

Hope it is not out of place to post this here but you all helped me make the decision.

I've decided not to buy a dedicated DAP. Most seem to be Android based which is fine I guess. But what bothers me is that all Android DAPs are using old versions of the OS. I've seen DAPs sport Android 8 through 13 so far. Android 16 is the latest and 17 is probbly around the corner. My concern is for software compatibility, bugs and security.

So, I'm going to go the DAC route. That way I can use my computer or phone as the source. The gear I'm focused on is the Hifiman Edition XV with the Queuestyle Sigma Pro.

I'm saving so my mind may change but I'm pretty sure this is where I'll settle. I appreciate all the advice from the group.

Am I Right for a DAP?

At the moment I'm using a Pixel 8 connected by USB (usually) to B&W Px8 S2 headphones or by case to B&W Pi8 earbuds. I use Qobuz native client on the Pixel 8. I've tried UAPP but found it a bit too complicated to set up and keep working.

I'm happy with the setup. But I think I would like to take it a step further.

I've been looking closely at the M33 R2R and might have bought it by now if not for Bloom not selling it yet. I plan to upgrade the headphones shortly after but, for now, I have an old set of Sony MDR-7506 headphones. Maybe Hifiman or something similar within the next few months.

But, I'm not sure. I'm not really interested in convenience or non-music features. If it doesn't sound at least marginally better than what I'm using now then it would be a mistake. But if it provides the same noticeable leap my current setup did over my old setup (Pixel 8, Amazon Music Unlimited, Sony WH-1000XM5) then it would be a success.

I'm curious what others think about this progression. Am I going down a good path with decent products in mind? Obviously I'm not an audiophile but love listening to music and really appreciate when I can hear things I never noticed before.

Minor Issues with Bitwarden Lately

I've had a few issues with Bitwarden on my PC (app) and the Chrome extension.

First, I've noticed that Bitwarden is running higher CPU than it has in the past even when it is minimized to the system tray. It's only about 3% but my SPro9 never really ran 3% for anything ongoing. I think it is the app as, when I quit it, the CPU utilization overall drops to 0 to 2% when idling. I'm getting this from watching Task Manager. I run the app so I can use Windows Hello to log in with the chrome extension.

Next, once or twice a day (not every time), the chrome extension locks up when authenticating. As mentioned, I use Windows Hello to log in. It was flawless in the past. When it happens, I have to terminate Bitwarden and Chrome (I think, I do it each time anyway) using the Task Manager. On the next try, it generally works.

This could be Windows Security or Windows Hello I guess but it only seems to be happening with Bitwarden.

Generally, I just hope others have the same problems I have and they usually get fixed within a release or two. But this has been going on for a while now.

Is this a known issue? Any ideas for fixing?

I thought this was a UAPP issue but it is also happening on Audirvana on Win11. I'm using the case for retrans.

I can start a playlist with songs of mixed formats. It seems that, when the next song is a different sample rate than the previous song the app shows it is still playing but there is no sound from the earbuds.

To restore audio, I have to unpug the case, plug it back in and then hit play. It continues on until the next track that is at a different sample rate.

My goal is to play bit-perfect without any resampling or other processing. I'm using Qobuz as the source. I don't know what to do.

Gemini says I'm losing clock-sync during transition but Gemini has been terribly wrong lately. Besides, I wouldn't know how to resolve that issue anyway.
