At the beginning of this year, Optimum raised my internet-only service from about $72/month to $95/month. I called and complained, and was told there were no promotions available and nothing could be done.

Fast forward to now: I’m moving out of state and called to cancel my service. I did not tell them that I was moving and optimum was not available where I was going to move to, but wanted to bust their chops and tell them that the rates were too high and I was canceling my service. As soon as I asked to disconnect, I was transferred to the retention department. Suddenly, they had offers available and were willing to lower my bill dramatically — one offer was as low as $30/month.

So if you’re an Optimum customer paying a high rate, it may be worth calling and telling them that you are canceling service. In my case, the retention team was able to offer pricing that wasn’t available when I simply called to complain about the increase.

Just sharing my experience in case it helps someone save a few bucks.
