Running into burnout rebuilding a community after a 12-year hiatus. Looking for advice from veteran admins.

Some of you might remember the name Black Forest Gaming from way back. We originally launched over 12 years ago, but after dealing with malicious server vandalism and targeted backend attacks, we had to pull the plug and walk away.

The itch to come back is real, and I've spent the last few weeks rebuilding the infrastructure from scratch on modern hardware. But man, the landscape of running a Rust community has changed drastically since the old days.

For those of you who have successfully spun up a fresh server recently:

  1. What are you finding is the most effective way to organically attract a core player base without burning a hole in your wallet on server listing sites?
  2. When looking for trustworthy staff/mods nowadays, what red flags do you look out for, or where are you actually finding reliable people?

Not trying to plug anything here—genuinely just looking to pick the brains of people who are currently in the trenches keeping servers alive. What's working for you guys right now?

Found an old screenshot from 12 years ago. Is this game still worth it in 2026?

I was digging through some old external hard drives and found a folder from 12 years ago—back when \[Black Forest Gaming\] was my primary project.

The game has changed a massive amount since then. Back then, it was raw, glitchy, and honestly, we spent most of our time just trying to stop people from clipping through walls. But the community? That was the best part.

We’ve decided to bring the BFG project back to life for this next wipe cycle. I’m curious—for the veterans who have been around since the early days, what’s the one "old-school" feature or vibe you miss the most in modern Rust?

And for the newer players, what’s the biggest frustration you’re facing in the current meta?

I’m aiming to build a server that balances the old-school "community-first" feel with the performance and QoL features we actually need in 2026. Would love to hear your thoughts.

[EU] Black Forest Gaming | Bi-Weekly 2x Hybrid | Max 4 | Est. 2014

Looking for the "Vanilla+" experience without the 3 AM offline raid anxiety?

Black Forest Gaming has been providing stable, mature-focused Rust experiences since 2014. We’ve rebuilt our core logic for 2026 to focus on what actually matters: meaningful progression and controlled PvP.

🛡️ Why BFG?

  • Hybrid Meta: Safe building zones + Monument-locked PvP. Build your base in peace, fight where it counts.
  • Max Group: 4: No more fighting 10-man zergs. Balanced team play for solo/duo/trio/quads.
  • 2x Rates: Accelerated progression to respect your time, without skipping the "survival" phase.
  • The Purge: Every wipe ends with 24 hours of total war. All protections lifted—use your hoarded resources.

⚙️ Server Specs

  • Map/BP: Bi-Weekly Map / Monthly Blueprint Force Wipe.
  • Performance: Hosted on high-performance enterprise hardware.
  • Integrity: Strict anti-toxicity and cheater enforcement.

We aren't a "no-life" mega-clan server. We’re for the working adults who want to log on, progress, and actually enjoy their wipe.
