We’ve been on a tour for over a week in Spain that promised 4 star hotels. They’ve been hit and miss. The bathrooms aren’t logical, some don’t have coffee, most don’t have robes. Not to sound like a princess but I’m happy to have landed at the Westin Cuzco hotel. It’s a nice way to end the trip.
My friend of 35 + years posted 2 pictures of us together on my birthday. She told me she had told her daughter I'd hate the one picture. I did. But struggling to understand why she'd post it knowing it was not flattering? Was it necessary to make me feel bad on my birthday? 🤷🏻♀️
My husband is 68 and I’m 65. As far as we know, we have no critical health issues. My son and his wife live across the continent. My daughter, her husband and daughter are 2 hours away. We’re pretty active, walk 5 miles a day. But we’re not as eager to take care of the yard, house etc. as we used to be. And tired of the maintenance -we just replaced the hvac.
So we’ve been looking at CCRCs. We looked for over 55 communities but they all take us further from our granddaughter. She’s a big part of our lives. Anyway we found 2 CCRCs that are equally close to her, have amenities we desire etc. The waiting lists are 7-10 years. They meet the set of criteria we drew up.
But the reaction to this by friends is that those places are for old people. Who knows what will happen in 7-10 years? Our main motivation is not being a burden to the kids. We dealt with parents and stepparents with cancer, heart disease, dementia and the common denominator is none of them wanted to leave home despite whether it was the best course for them. Honestly it was a burden on us to try to support them in end of life 4 hours away. We’re looking for places that will accommodate our active lives now but offer support should we require more resources. I’m definitely a planner and my childhood was a bit chaotic so I definitely try to do what I can to mitigate risks. I also think if we downsize now while we can and get established in a community, we will be more comfortable should we have issues in the future. The kids are on board. We looked at moving closer to our daughter but just didn’t find great housing option.
Bottom line should I just be enjoying our early retirement and not worry about this? We’re traveling lots but can imagine a day when we want to do less. Thoughts and experiences?
I booked a RC inner passage cruise for next August 29- September 5. I’m overwhelmed by the activities. My husband and I are active in our mid 60s. My son and his wife are in their late 30s and very active, as in ride Gran Fondo so I anticipate we won’t do all the same activities. So what overwhelms me is that it looks like you can do multiple a day if you can afford to? Is there a strategy for doing things in the right port? I’m most interested in whale watching, bears and otters, gondola, hiking, learning about indigenous culture. Several of these things are offered at multiple ports so what’s best for where? What kind of boat for whale watching? I’m not interested in being soaked. Is the zip line worth it? I think I’d sit that one out. Are the bike rides hard in traffic? Any pro tips are appreciated. There are pages and pages to select. I won’t do private tours so please don’t suggest. Thanks!
My kids are saying September works better for them. Is it too cold and misty then? Is August better weather and visibility wise?
Why have so many left lately? Were they voluntary exits?
I've never seen a bathroom with a floor to ceiling window before! This is the JW Marriott in Nashville. Very grateful for the early check in as I'm dragging. I said we'd take any room available but they were still able to give us this corner room.
