100 Days of Cachy (and Linux in general)

I was primarily inspired by the LTT Linux Challenge, along with the recent improvements to NTSYNC, gaming performance, and compatibility with my GPU, to finally make the switch from Windows to Linux. I chose CachyOS.

And I've got to say... wow.

I actually tried Linux about a year ago, starting with Bazzite back when I still had my RTX 3070. My experience wasn't great. Most games had heavy stuttering, performance was poor, and I ran into enough issues that I ended up deleting the partition and going back to Windows after only a short time.

This time was completely different.

I boot my PC, click Play, and games just work. Performance has been almost identical to Windows from my admittedly rough testing. I really like how straightforward the whole system feels. Whenever I want to update, I click the little Cachy update icon on my second monitor, let it do its thing for a minute or two, maybe reboot if there's a kernel update, and then I'm right back where I left off.

I did keep a separate 500 GB SSD with Windows installed, though. Linux is my daily OS, and around 90% of the games I play work perfectly, but my friend group likes jumping between lots of different games. Some of them still use kernel level anti cheat or anti cheat systems that simply don't work on Linux.

So far those have included:

  • Escape from Tarkov
  • League of Legends
  • Valorant
  • Arena Breakout
  • Rainbow Six Siege

For those games, I simply made a shortcut in KDE that reboots directly into my Windows installation. It's a pretty painless workaround.

Ironically, the few times I've had to switch back to Windows reminded me why I left in the first place.

I'd reboot into Windows, immediately get hit with a mandatory update, and sit there watching spinning dots for five minutes before I could even use my PC. Then I'd want to add a startup application, only to realize it's somehow more awkward than doing the exact same thing in KDE. OBS would randomly stop working, AMD Adrenalin's ReLive wouldn't work properly, and after I finally finished playing and shut the PC down... another update screen.

Seriously?

So far I haven't had any issue on CachyOS that I'd call game breaking or OS breaking.

The biggest problem I had happened about 20 days in. I changed my system font, and somehow broke KDE's Fonts settings page. It would instantly crash every time I opened it. Thankfully, it wasn't difficult to fix with a bit of troubleshooting and a few GPT prompts.

I've also run into a handful of Proton related issues, but that's more on Valve than the distro itself, and several of the problems I originally encountered have already been fixed through updates.

That's probably my favorite thing about Linux so far.

Updates actually feel meaningful.

On Windows, updates usually feel invisible unless they break something. On CachyOS, I regularly notice small improvements, whether it's a new feature, smoother frame times, better stability, or just little quality of life changes. It feels like the platform is constantly moving forward.

Overall, after 100 days, I have no reason to switch back to Windows full time.

I'm genuinely happy with the move, and I'm excited to see where Linux gaming is another six months from now. Development moves so quickly that looking back even half a year already feels ancient.

Games I've Played

  • Warframe
  • SPT (Single Player Tarkov)
  • Path of Exile 2
  • Rocket League
  • Deadlock
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Garry's Mod
  • Cult of the Lamb
  • Terraria (Vanilla and Modded)
  • Counter-Strike 2
  • Forza Horizon 6
  • Wuthering Waves
  • Zenless Zone Zero
  • Honkai: Star Rail
  • Arknights: Endfield
  • Project Zomboid
  • Schedule I
  • Cities: Skylines II
  • Diablo IV
  • Dead by Daylight
  • Civilization VI

[Feedback] Can we please move or change the Icebreaker transit for the love of God!

I do not think that my excitement for a new major map has been extinguished as fast as it has been with this update.

On EU, literally every game i try to transit with a homie we get camped by people who don't even have icebreaker unlocked just sitting there waiting for people to pass by to farm meta kits, at least for terminal it was as a corner of the map and the transit itself was pretty well covered and you could transit safely as long as you got to the sandbags at least

This is just pure cancer, you sit out pretty much in the open with almost no cover where you can get shot from in like 50 different spots and there is only 1 way you can go to even get there, 500 different spots where someone can camp the route

From like 10 total attempts 6 of them we could not even get there before we got tapped on Shoreline from some 600 hour andy sitting on top of the rock/inside the house/on the mini lighthouse in the back waiting for us to come.

I thought that they learnt their lesson the first time with Terminal and how bad that was for some people, and my expectations were low but holy fuck

And before someone comes in with some excuse for the devs like "oh well its a ship where do you expect the transit to be" as if there is not like 50 different ways, lighthouse has a shore, use the mini cave next to water treatment, use the river on customs or even swap the boat idea entirely, we could have gotten there by heli and gotten out by boat, not like there is a intro cinematic showing us getting off the boat anyways, why does every important transit where you have to carry out a meta kit have to be on shoreline where its pretty much a coin toss on if you can even transit, if you spawn anywhere but right next to the transit you might as well just reset and gamble again

Also yes i know that you can get a quest to unlock the node on the map to go without transit but do you really think that most people will be able to get the quest first try considering that there is like 50 BD spawns when you have multiple players and the AI is on 50kg of crack and will literally spot you through 3 walls

I swear this aspect does not exist!

I have been gambling legendary rings and 1 handed weapons as a barbarian for the last 2 hours and almost wasted all of my resources and i haven't found ONE of these for my build

This Linux_gaming posts comments are exactly what is wrong with Linux

The Linux gaming sub is exactly what is wrong with the community, post about discord there improving the platform for Linux and most of the comments are "Scum company, I don't care, I don't use discord, I use vesktop, why don't you????!!"

Like I thought that we were supposed to celebrate every win we get, even if minor, discord is a huge social media right now and the average gamer is probably on it, why are we talking as if the average person is going to ditch discord for literally anything else

And vesktop isn't a real solution either, it still doesn't support global keybinds natively, no statuses, etc...

Every time this just proves further and further why devs don't want to work on Linux support, even if they do something right they are treated like this

[Dead by Daylight] DLC/Content Unlocker for Epic Games Store on Linux?

Hi all,

About 60 days ago I switched from Windows 11 to CachyOS (Arch). Everything has been smooth sailing until now, but I’ve hit my first major roadblock regarding Dead by Daylight (DBD).

Back on Windows, I used FB as an unlocker for the Epic Games Store version. It worked perfectly. However, since switching to Linux, I haven't been able to get it running. The program executes, but because it relies on proxy logic and certificates that were designed strictly for Windows, it fails to function under Proton. I’ve talked with the Discord community, and the consensus is that it would require a complete rewrite for Linux compatibility, which is well beyond my technical reach. Since DBD runs via Proton, I’m hoping someone here has found a workaround or an alternative method for unlocking content on the EGS version specifically for Linux.

Steps Taken:

Attempted to run the Windows-based unlocker via Proton/Wine.

Researched certificate/proxy porting (deemed not possible)

System & Software Information

Name of game: Dead by Daylight

Linux Distribution: CachyOS (Arch)

Proton Version: GE proton and Proton Cachy

Game Launcher: Heroic Games Launcher / Lutris

Release Info: Epic Games Store Official

Unlocker Info: Previously used "FB" on Windows; looking for Linux-compatible alternative or proxy fix.

CS2 6ms higher input latency on Cachy than Windows, real or fake?

Didn't find much information on setup used and the video itself is pretty blurry

So i want to rice my desktop a bit, my problem is that i have the widget for media playing on my taskbar which i think looks nice, but i also have the PlexAMP app running in the taskbar.

What i want is to either put PlexAMP in my system tray so it doesn't clutter up my taskbar for no reason or to hide it until i need it, i tried searching on google for it but the only solutions i found was for X11 (KDocker) and i use KDE with Wayland

The App itself as far as i can tell doesn't natively support system tray, minimizing it just does the usual thing of, well, minimizing the app and clicking X shuts it down

I pulled for Hiyuki, i already have Lynae and i wanted to pull for Lucilla ever since the drip marketing, i saw that people said that she will be on the same team as Hiyuki but i dont have Mornye or Chisa and i only have Lyane, i know that currently we dont know anything about Lucilla or what team comps she slots into but i would like to get some kind of 2nd opinion on if i should pull for Mornye since i am trying to save up for the Cyberpunk collab
