Ideas for seeking industry mentor(s)

Hi everyone!

So I live in mid-sized city and work for a big wine retailer. I’ve pretty much gotten all the wine basics I can get from my current job, so looking to get more specific about smaller producers, people, sub-appellations, etc.

I know I can always just read things on my own and google as much as I can, but I also enjoy just talking to people and miss a formal style of learning.

Last year, I applied to a smaller, specialty wine shop in town for a partial manager position and ended up making it to second choice just due to my lack of experience in the industry which I understood.

I am thinking about reaching out to that shop again and offering something like: I can come in every 2-3 weeks on a weekday with a coravin, purchase a $50-100 bottle and just crash course me on a topic, winemaker, producer, appellation.

Does that sounds like something that might be received well? I’d maybe offer this to another shop in town that I like if it seems like a good idea.

Important to note: My husband and I want to make the move to Napa/Sonoma eventually, and both of these shops have a specialty in sourcing wine from Napa.

Thank you all in advance!

Any wine enthusiasts out there?

Hi everyone 👋

I am coming to terms with the fact that I don’t know too many people in the area and less that have a similar interest in wine as I do.

I’m wondering if there’s any people or groups in town that enjoy great wine that might enjoy getting together and sharing some bottles.

My husband I are starting to run out of space to store our bottles, and we just don’t go through them as fast as we used to.

I haven’t been a real enthusiast for too long, but I have acquired quite a few that are both ready now and that I’ll wait on for a couple of years.

Most of my cellar is California wines, but do have a few European and Southern Hemisphere wines that I expect to be fantastic.

I’m considering creating a post/group on NextDoor as well if anyone is interested.

Seeking Wine Career Advice

Hi there!

I'm looking for advice/insight/guidance on where to look as I seek to further my career in the industry. If there’s a better subreddit, please let me know!

I'm currently living in the American Midwest and my spouse and I are hoping to relocate to the Napa/Sonoma area within the year.

I'm still in my late 20s and pretty new to the industry, having passed my CSW exam earlier this year and have been working in the retail space for almost as long as I studied for the exam.

I’m not exactly sure where I would like to be, but the idea of working at/for a small(er) producer is exciting to me, though I know you pretty much need a lot of experience and an “in” for those. I also really enjoy education in both teaching and in life-long learning. On that, I also love being multi-faceted in any place I work - l enjoy supporting in any part of the business as much as I can both to learn and to be of help when needed.

I know I can look at WineJobs/LinkedIn, but I’d like to get some guidance before just applying to several places and roles. I just know working in a big retail store is not where I’d ultimately like to be.

Also, if anyone in the area can also offer some insight regarding pay, that’d be great. More generally, I’d just like to know if you could comfortably afford to live in the general area from winery work. My spouse makes good money remotely, but I’d also love to contribute to our new home and life in California.
