What is a Dirty Cello? Find out at the Native Sons of the Golden West in Napa on May 1

The band Dirty Cello is a globe trotting band that performs blues, rock and Americana, all fronted by virtuoso cellist Rebecca Roudman. A classically trained symphony player, Roudman dropped the straight- jacket of classical music years ago and hasn’t looked back since.

“We travel all over the place,” says Roudman, “and everywhere we go, the idea is to put on a high energy show. We’re a rock band, but with a cello instead of a lead guitar.” The Dirty Cello band really does get around - with shows from Iceland, to Indonesia, to an underground cave in California. The show will be at the beautiful, but lesser known, Grand Hall of the Native Sons of the Golden West, right downtown on Coombs St. in Napa.

Among their many descriptions, Oakland Magazine describes the group as, "Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky, carnival, romantic, sexy, tangled, electric, fiercely rhythmic, and textured, and only occasionally classical." Roudman agrees with this description and adds, “We’re all about the fun at our shows and we step on stage with only a vague plan as to what specific songs we are going to play, and we react to what the audience wants to hear and adjust accordingly.”

With a set list ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Charlie Daniels to rocking original songs, the band can deliver on this promise.

Another "Critique My Itinerary" Ask

I know these are a dime a dozen here. I'm just starting to overthink all the options and want to see if I'm on a smart path.

My wife and I visit the first week of August. So I'm guessing I have time before having to make reservations. Hence, I haven't nailed down times yet. Wanted to make sure I'm on the right path for the general choices and order of things.

Staying: Westin Verasa in downtown Napa
Transportation: We'll rent a car at SFO and plan to hire a service that drives it for us

For the driver, it looks like we need to do at least 6 hours with them each day. That seems doable. But I'm alternately worried I'm not packing enough in each day, or packing in too much and not considering timing.

Day 1 (we fly in late the night before, so I didn't pack a ton in for day one)

  • Breakfast/coffee - Oxbow Market
  • Domaine Carneros (bubbles and bites, so we get a light lunch out of it)
  • Matthiasson Winery
  • Dinner - Scala

Day 2

  • Breakfast - Bouchon Bistro
  • Frog's Leap
  • Nickle & Nickle
  • Lunch - Mustard's Grill
  • Stag's Leap Wine Cellars
  • Hang around downtown Napa for the evening, pop into somewhere ?? for dinner

Day 3

  • Breakfast - Under-Study in St. Helena
  • Schramsberg for the tasting and cave tour
  • Lunch - Gott's
  • Charles Krug
  • Relax time at hotel or around Napa
  • Dinner - Angele

Day 4
Unsure, this is where I got a bit overwhelmed at what I was planning. Maybe a Platypus tour for our last day, to take the planning out of it?

Much appreciated for any advice or critique! I've taken a lot of suggestions from a lot of threads here, which have been immensely helpful.

Best Vineyard Tour/Tasting Experience?

If you could only go to one vineyard for overall experience of tasting and tour, what one would it be? I prefer white/bubbly wines but am not opposed to reds by any means. It seems like Joseph Phelps is mentioned a lot but the description on the site seems more like a quick tasting rather than an overall experience.

Last-minute winery cave tour options

Good afternoon.

This Friday, May 22, I will be in Santa Rosa with two friends. We have an appointment for a food/wine pairing at 10:30 AM at St. Francis Winery and were hoping to follow that up with a tour of caves/cellars around 2 PM.

For this stop, we were hoping for an option that focused more on the excellence of the wine itself than on the pairing experience. Also, I like the idea of the cave tour and seeing how the wine is made and aged. The original plan was the Estate tour at Stag's Leap, but by the time I figured everything out, it had sold out.

Does anyone have similar recommendations for a place that might have last-minute spots available?

A tasting with a variety of whites, reds, and even dessert wines would be nice, but if we had to choose one category, I'd have to stick with reds.

Solo first time - woman seeking suggestions for how it works

Hello, I am a woman going solo. I have one Thursday evening, and all day Friday and Saturday to visit Napa and need some help understanding how to approach it.

  1. I'm staying in downtown Napa.

  2. Do I do Platypus Napa one day and Platypus Sonoma the second day? Or only one tour.

  3. If I do only one Platypus tour, which one do you recommend?

  4. If I do only one tour, how would you suggest I structure the second free day? Do I uber around?

I feel a little lost. I'm not sure how to approach this visit. I cannot drink and drive so if I take my car far, say to Russion River or something, I will maybe do one tasting but that's it, and just explore after that. But can then do another one via uber back in Napa.

I really welcome any suggestions!! I arrive at the end of May and don't have anything planned/booked yet except the hotel.

Thank you!

5/12 Missed Connection @ Charter Oak

You were there with a friend working your way through the wine list like a couple of pros. I was the cheeky girl in black two seats away. You didn't mistake my direct look, I wish I had stayed to talk to you longer. You are likely on your trip now, a month away. If it's you, tag me back and tell me about your trip. Would love to find you again at the bar when you return. You seem good fun, I'd like to be your sidekick some lazy afternoon. Cheers!

Looking for Napa-area trails where I can bike while my son runs 5 to 10 miles

My son and I will be staying in downtown Napa soon, and I’m trying to find a good trail where he can do a 5 to 10 mile run while I ride alongside him on a bike.

We’re looking for something:

  • Safe and not too crowded
  • Bike-friendly
  • Can be paved or dirt but not mountain bike level.
  • Ideally scenic

We don’t mind driving a bit outside downtown Napa if there’s a better option nearby.

Thanks!

Going Solo - Platypus? Please help

Hi! I’m going to Napa solo the last week of this month for the first time and would love recommendation on which Platypus tour to do? Napa, Sonoma, Healdsburg...

Since I’m solo, would it be a good idea to do two, one on each day? (Friday and Saturday.) Or, do one platypus tour and then travel around solo the other day?

I also welcome any other recommendations. Right now I have planned to stay at a Napa hotel for three nights. Thank you!

BLS certification options in Napa, anything local for healthcare workers

I work at a clinic in Napa and my BLS is up for renewal. Finding AHA certified options locally has always been tricky and I usually end up driving to Santa Rosa or Vallejo which takes up half my day.

Anyone know of AHA Training Centers in or around Napa that do BLS renewal? I'd love to find something I can actually get to without an hour of driving each way.

Birthday Dinner

Hey there! I’ll be in Napa/Sonoma area for my wife’s birthday. We are a group of 7, so looking for a fun and delish restaurant. Currently I have 5 in mind so want to narrow down

- Mustards Grill
- Ad Hoc
- Charter Oak
-Bottega
-Angele

Happy to look at other options but these seem like a great selection. Anyone have input or want to throw another in the rink. We have a car so distance doesn’t matter

Healdsburg recs?

Hey fellow wine lovers!

I am planning a trip to Healdsburg in June and looking for recommendations on the best wineries within <30m drive.

Ideally looking for a blend of beautiful views, maybe a spot that does a good pairing lunch too, and a mix of nouveau and olde worlde style options. If it helps for context we did Napa area last yr and did stags leap, far niente and domaine carneos for a blend of vibes.

We are a foodie couple and we love wine and all things beautiful!

We also have a Rez for Cyrus one evening, a lunch planned at Madrona and have been told to check out the wine wall at Matheson.

TYIA!

Nintendo 2ds/3ds

Hi y'all! I was wondering if anyone knew where I could get a Nintendo 3DS or 2DS with potentially some Pokémon games on it. It's been a wish of mine to own one ever since I was a little kid, and I trust this community more than I do online, thanks!
