Import Canadian Vehicle into USA at a US-Mexico border
Hi Experts,
I have moved to US last year and drove my car(bought in Canada in 2020) without actually importing it planning to take it back and sell it off if I couldn't clear off the loan on time. But seeing the interest rates in US that time I planned to clear off the loan and got a Lien release from my bank and then was able to import it temporarily here in US(texas). I did drive off the vehicle into the country then without knowing the complications.
The thing is I am still driving the car on a temporary import and can only permanently import it at the border as confirmed by the local Customs officer at an airport. Another thing told by him is that I cannot sell or dispose the car off here until my stay if I am temporarily importing it for whatever time I stay here.
I did check with the SAAQ(motor-vehicle department agent)on the Canadian side , if I can easily bring the car back and do the sale, but sshe was like, I need to be a resident of Canada or the province to be able to re-register the car and complete the sale. Or else I need to give power of attorney to a friend to do the sale. As I am not planning to drive all the way to Canadian border which is 2000 miles away and do the trial and error.
Instead of me driving the car all the way up to Canada, Can I still take the car to US-Mexico border to complete the formalities? Do you guys have any experience doing by your own or dealing with a Auto-Broker at any of the US-Mexico borders for me to take care of the permanent import process and then I can sell it here in the US?
