Those who went out on your own - when did you know it was time?

Title says it all. I'm in a spot right now where I need to make some tough decisions and do some risk assessment.

I could write a book on my grievances and everything, but essentially it's basically the usual "I run the company and stamp all the plans while the owner sips margaritas on the beach" sort of situation. It would be palatable if I made a commensurate salary, but I do not believe that to be the case.

I've got a business plan, clients who come right to me and a good track record.

I've also got a young kid at home with one on the way, a marriage I'd like to keep stable and a mortgage.

Anyone got some good advice they'd like to share?
