My Houghton epiphany

I am a seasoned Houghtonista and I've earned my stripes - I've seen how the festival has changed as it's become more popular. Both the crowd and the festival set up. For better or worse there's 100s of posts on here I don't need to go into detail on this. I can admit at times I've been pretty bad in gatekeeping towards Houghton as it's something that's small, special and truly unique and I want to protect this. Popularity and demand has increased as a direct of social media and you can say it's become less underground now, tickets sold out within a few hours this year - never been seen before at Houghton. Tickets were pretty hard to get until two weeks before the festival - then you could easily get one, hardly pushing out regulars that didn't manage to get tickets. There was loads on RA resale.

My epiphany - the sound at Houghton has become more popular, demand for these DJs has increased. Lets be honest Craig could have quite easily hung his boots up after Covid and retired and I swear he mentioned something about this in an interview. Same with Jane Fitz, Dave Harvey, Smagghe'y, Chez Damier, Felix Dickinson, Ricardo Villalobos (maybe a bad example) they're all getting on they could've quite easily slowed down after Covid. But no, Houghton has increased there popularity and they're playing week in week out all across the world. It's even brought Terry Francis, Eddie Richards, Grant Dell back in the scene who were playing a 1 gig a year - now they're getting booked monthly. How is this a bad thing? They're all thriving and it's nice to see. It's great to see DJs that have been around since the 80s/90s play on vinyl.

Houghton is a 4 day festival, how has a few brief 30 second interactions with a gang of guys and girls barging past you and standing on your Solomon's ruined your weekend or Tilly from Surrey talking about her boarding school days and she toots on a blueberry matcha vape. If you're in the crowd and people near you are chatting, literally move. Go a bit closer to the front, go nearer to the speaker. Problem solved.

Long live Houghton - and let's get Craig that MBE whilst we're at it

Festivals similar to Houghton

Is there any festivals similar to Houghton / Free Rotation in Upstate / East Coast? I know Sustain but it's invite only and hard to get invited, Making Time festival looks good as well. Can anyone recommend any other ones?

Newport Management - charged illegal broker fee

We was charged a broker fee with our apartment - $2200. Unfortunately we were in a situation where we needed to move asap and had many failed apartment applications. We found a great apartment and got accepted for it, nothing was discussed apart from 1 months rent upfront, 1 month rent security deposit and when Newport Management contacted us the day before we signed leases and paid first month and security deposit (which we have receipts for) they mentioned a broker fee of $2200 it was paid in cash, I have the bank account transaction for the cash withdrawal too. If we didn't pay the fee we wouldn't have got the apartment simple as that.

Is there anything we can do about getting a refund or filing a complaint? We don't want it to affect us in being able to renewing our lease. Newport Management have to be one of the worst management agencies I have ever been with, they do not accept responsibility for anything and try to make us pay for every repair we have. I have the feeling we've pissed $2200 down the drain but wanted to check here first, would also like to file any complaints / further actions without us getting any repercussions.

Houghton Advisory

The gaffer is ready to welcome you and has a few words: Have fun, pace yourself, put sunscreen on, bring a dust mask, Houghton is inclusive to everyone, if you see someone alone make mates with them, if you’re feeling unwell speak to security/ medics, get lost in the music, stay well fuelled and hydrated, gooch your disco essentials at the entry gates, don’t be a creep and have a fucking blast. Be safe be lucky. Craig x
