Technical Discussion

I originally started building an offline e-book reader because I wanted to understand that with Android if I can do the same level of things that I had done on my pc using python 👻

While working on it, I ended up learning a lot more about Android development than I expected, especially around:

  • Resumable downloads
  • Handling interrupted/corrupted downloads
  • Crash recovery
  • Managing app updates
  • Working with offline-first data
  • Keeping the UI responsive during background operations

One things I need to mention is that the amount of edge cases that I got thinking about one feature and then had to fix a lot of feature that could just somehow link back to the new feature. 🤣

I'm still experimenting with the architecture and trying to figure out how far I want to take the project.

I built an e-book app for myself, got 100 unexpected downloads, and it completely changed how I code.

I originally built an free open source offline library for E-Books and Light Novels just to scratch my own itch. I didn't expect anyone to care, but after sharing it, it somehow hit about 100 downloads!!

Well then like with this system in place I really got to try my hands on some great features like

  • Resumable downloads,
  • Crash handlers, and
  • Update manager

and this time it was like while building I was thinking about the end user and how should I handle the error from their perspective like felt really cool.

This got me into quite a deep of a territory like I then set up a feedback channel for the users only after I realized that I am really getting users and I don't have any feedback methods

Though I am still figuring out where to take it, but the experience it is giving me is like damn amazing!!

[Release] LNCrawler - A fully-featured, standalone Light Novel downloader

Hi there,

I'd like to share LNCrawler, an open-source Android app for building an offline library of Light Novels and other E-Books.

LNCrawler is designed as a standalone downloader and exporter, so you can download your novels and export them to EPUB for use with your preferred EPUB reader.

Current features:

  • Multi-source support — Download novels from supported sources.
  • Background downloading — Downloads continue reliably in the background.
  • EPUB export — Export downloaded novels directly to EPUB.
  • Automated source extensions — Source support can be updated independently without requiring a new app release.
  • Open source — Free to use, with the project open to community contributions.

The project is still relatively new, so I'd especially appreciate feedback from people who actually try it out. If you run into a bug, find a source that doesn't work correctly, or have suggestions for improving the UI or download experience, I'd love to hear about it and address it in future releases..

Any manga reading app that supports two way synchronisation?

I have been using Mihon for a long time and have set up tracking in MangaBaka but since I spend most of my time on PC I sometimes read on there as well and update on the website.

I would like to have it synchronised from there as well but most of the apps that I looked for do not support 2 way synchronisation for this tracker.
