In Good Community: How u/fsv uses code and care to keep Reddit human
Welcome to the very first edition of In Good Community, a new series celebrating the people who make Reddit the helpful, weird, and deeply human place it is. While r/modnews has historically been all about platform updates, once a month we're carving out room to feature some of the standout mods building and shaping communities here. Thirteen years ago, u/fsv was just another Reddit user—lurking, commenting, and hanging out in his favorite subreddits. Today, he’s an experienced moderator of some of Reddit’s biggest pet and UK local communities, the developer behind over 25 public Devvit apps, and a Mod Hall of Fame 2025 honoree. He’s even taken the stage at major marketing conferences to teach brands how to speak like actual humans on the platform. None of it started with a grand master plan. It started, as so many mod tales do, with a single mod mail.
Accidental ambitions and mod mail invites
u/fsv’s very first mod invite actually found him. Back in 2020, the team over at r/CoronavirusUK noticed he was a consistently helpful voice in the threads and dropped into his inbox to ask if he wanted to join the crew. He said yes, and one sub eventually turned into several.
After years of sharing practical financial advice in r/UKPersonalFinance, he was brought on to help run things there next. His entry into r/unitedkingdom happened under very different circumstances: On the day Queen Elizabeth II passed away, news anchors were already wearing black ties on live TV before any official announcements were made. Sensing an unprecedented wave of traffic heading straight for r/unitedkingdom, u/fsv messaged the mod team to give them a heads-up. As it turned out, they were already in the middle of discussing an invite and brought him on immediately to help brace for impact.
Since then, he’s made a habit of stepping in when communities hit a wall. When r/mewborns—a subreddit dedicated exclusively to newborn kittens (yes, it is as cute as you are imagining)—went completely unmoderated for six weeks after an admin account deletion, spambots flooded the gates. He stepped in, cleared out the bot traffic, and restored a safe, quiet haven for cat lovers sharing photos of tiny new arrivals.
u/fsv also helps run r/aww, one of the largest animal hubs on the entire internet. When asked about his personal favorite posts, his ranking is "definitely cats, dogs slightly below that, but basically all the furry things." As a parent to two cats of his own, Spike and Maddie, it’s a natural fit.

That track record across crisis response, sub revivals, and massive communities earned him a 2025 Mod Hall of Fame induction as a Veteran Visionary. For anyone looking to steward a community, his advice is straightforward: learn Reddit’s toolkit. He notes that struggling mod teams often simply don't realize what styling, rule-setting, and comment guidance features are already sitting at their fingertips. And above all, he says to be visible. A mod team operating as an anonymous black box struggles to build trust; community members need to see the real humans behind the mod queue.
Driving impact, one Devvit app at a time
u/fsv designs software for a living, so building custom Devvit apps for Reddit became a logical extension of his day job. (If you’re unfamiliar with Devvit, it’s our developer platform.) He’s built roughly 25 public tools (and a suite of private ones) using a simple formula: spot an annoying friction point, map out the logic, and write the code. Better yet, every app he builds is open-source so other devs can peek under the hood.
A few highlights from his toolkit:
- Bot Bouncer: One of Devvit’s most widely adopted anti-spam tools (and his personal favorite project). It constantly adapts to new spam techniques, including an update that scans text hidden inside images to catch NSFW spammers.
- Modmail Translator: A tool "born out of laziness—the best kind of innovation." Tired of constantly copy-pasting non-English appeals into external translation tools, he spent an hour building an app that translates messages directly inside mod mail.

Taking the stage
For u/fsv, building for Reddit fed straight back into his career. Working on Devvit projects drew him to learn TypeScript, a language he ended up using in his day job that he otherwise would have had to learn from scratch.
That crossover showed up most visibly at MADFest in London. Invited to represent Reddit's community builders, u/fsv took the stage in front of 1,000+ marketers to explain how brands can engage online without annoying the room. His core advice from years of community leadership? Stop interrupting conversations with ads; become a legitimate community member first, learn the culture, and contribute something useful.
Attendees (including marketing leads from major financial brands) lined up after the panel to talk shop and swap contact info. His mod work has since opened doors to even more speaking engagements, including a recent appearance at Reddit’s EMEA Finance Summit.
What’s next for u/fsv?
When asked about his favorite moments on Reddit, u/fsv doesn't point to traffic spikes or Devvit launches. He points to r/unitedkingdom’s annual Christmas Fundraiser for Air Ambulances UK. "It’s the kind of moment that gives you a nice warm feeling," he says, reflecting on how a sub can mobilize real-world help for a critical service. The mod team is already gearing up for this year's charity drive.
Looking ahead, u/fsv is staying focused on the fundamentals: keeping fundraisers on track, refining mod tools, and keeping massive subreddits feeling human. Whether he’s patching code to block bad actors or sweeping the queue for newborn kitten enthusiasts, his work offers a blueprint for building communities that actually last.
