2016 XF-S 3.0d – catastrophic engine failure at 85k miles. £13k Jaguar quote. Repair, specialist engine replacement, or sell?

Hi all, I’m looking for some practical advice from people who know these cars well.

I have a 2016 Jaguar XF-S 3.0 diesel, around 85,000 miles. I bought it from a dealer in October 2025 and, unfortunately, it has now suffered a catastrophic engine failure.

The car is currently with Jaguar, who have investigated it and advised that there has been serious internal engine damage involving piston-to-valve contact. They are recommending engine replacement and have indicated a cost of roughly £13,000. I’m waiting for their full written technical report and exact quotation.

The car is otherwise in good condition and, immediately before the failure, was probably worth around £10k–£12k. In its current non-running state, I’ve been offered less than the diagnostic work from Jaguar to identify the fault, so simply scrapping/selling it as-is would crystallise a very large loss.

There is a separate consumer dispute with the supplying dealer over pre-sale servicing and inspection, and I may ultimately be able to recover some of the losses through the court. However, I do not want to make the repair decision on the assumption that I will win that claim. I need to decide what makes financial sense if I have to fund the repair myself.

Before purchase, the dealer specifically told me that they checked timing chains and belts on cars before delivery. They also initially agreed to replace the cambelt/tensioner/water pump as part of the deal, but then said they had found paperwork showing the cambelt had previously been changed in Jan 2024, so that work was not carried out.

I also had engine-management problems earlier this year, although I don’t yet know whether Jaguar considers those relevant to the eventual failure.

What I’d really appreciate is advice from owners/technicians on:

  1. Would you ever spend £13k on a Jaguar-supplied replacement engine for a 2016 XF-S, or is that economically mad?
  2. What is a realistic price for a properly fitted replacement/reconditioned 3.0 diesel engine from a reputable Jaguar specialist?
  3. Are there particular specialists you would trust with this engine? I’m in Gloucestershire/South Wales, but I’d travel for the right place.
  4. What should be replaced at the same time? Belts, tensioners, idlers, water pump, oil cooler, turbo-related parts, etc.?
  5. Jaguar has offered me a 12-month warranty on the work. If the car had a documented Jaguar-fitted new or remanufactured engine at 85k miles, how much difference would that realistically make to its resale value?
  6. If this were your car, would you repair and keep it for several years, repair and sell it, or take the loss and move on?
  7. Is there anything in particular I should ask Jaguar to photograph or preserve before the engine is removed, especially if I may need to establish what actually failed?

I’m not looking for legal advice so much as the practical Jaguar-owner view on what you would do with the car from here.

Thanks. Any experience with replacement 3.0d engines, especially on the XF/XF-S, would be really useful.

Moin! Nic. Haug As Lost

Found a Norwegian Nic. Haug AS cap in Hamburg — looking for its owner.

We found this black Nic. Haug AS cap in Hamburg on 1st August. After looking up the company, it seems to come from Ballstad in Lofoten, Norway.

It may have belonged to an employee, fisherman or someone connected with the company who was visiting Hamburg. We’re returning to the UK shortly and thought we’d try to reunite it with its owner before adopting it as a very well-travelled holiday souvenir.

Please message me with where you believe it was lost, so I can verify ownership.

Printable Space Wolves 11th Edition Points Reference v1.0

Hey folks,

I’ve put together a printable Space Wolves points reference for the updated 11th edition Munitorum costs.

The idea is to make army building a bit easier at the table or when tinkering with lists. It includes:

  • Space Wolves unit points
  • Space Marine units available to Space Wolves
  • Wargear costs where listed
  • Leader and Support options, showing what can lead to what
  • A reverse lookup so you can see which Leaders can join each unit
  • Detachment and Enhancement costs
  • Legends entries kept separately at the end

It’s intended as a practical quick-reference aid rather than a replacement for the official app or Warhammer Community downloads, so please check the official source if anything looks odd or changes later.

Printable version here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rn6hQ_IX0YKPYbePEh5YH1QdAHOMezN9/edit?usp=drive_link&ouid=113385888225988001711&rtpof=true&sd=true

Hope it helps a few fellow sons of Russ with list building. For the Allfather.

Drop Pods in 11th

It appears that you can Rapid Ingress at the end of your opponent’s move phase and then Heroic Intervention at the end of their Charge phase regardless of charges being made. It is expensive CP-wise (and pts-wise for an 0OC model), but does this make it worth revisiting Drop Pods in 11th edition?

The 8" max range gives more room to drop these in, and range counts from the Hull of the vehicle, so does that mean the open doors do not count?

I'd love to see a price drop or rule update on these; it's very Space Wolves to drop in rather than teleport.

Logan leading 2OC Terminators, Arjac leading T6 terminators

Hey folks,

I’ve heard a rumour that non-Character units cannot be given Enhancements if they are being led by an Epic Hero, but I can’t find an actual ruling that says this.

As far as I can tell, the Enhancement is being given to the eligible non-Character unit, not to the Epic Hero leading it, so it does not seem logical that the Epic Hero restriction would prevent it.

If we could, this would be a shot in the arm for Wolf Guard Terminators.

Has anyone seen an official ruling or FAQ on this?

Space Wolves 11th Edition Printable Quick-Reference Cards

Hi all,

This is an update on my printable Space Wolves quick-reference card project.

I’ve now completed cards for the Core Stratagems, the army rule, detachment rules and detachment-specific stratagems.

The idea is simple: if you’ve got a colour printer and some old trading cards in sleeves, you can print the sheets on A4, cut them out, slide them into sleeves with a spare card behind them, and have a small reference deck for use at the table.

Here’s the current Google Drive link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1y4haN23Th5IcSLhX3A37URplEHuRb3Gt/view?usp=drive_link

These are intended as quick-reference aide-memoires during games, not as a replacement for the official rules. I’ve tried to keep them as close as possible to the current wording while making them readable at card size, but please do check the official rules if anything is unclear.

I made the cards using Magic Set Editor (https://sourceforge.net/projects/magicseteditor/), with open-source art where possible.

The aim was to make them readable when printed, easy to spot during a game, and thematically fun on the table without slowing things down.

I’d be very happy to hear any suggestions for improving the layout, readability or artwork choices. Also, if you spot any wording errors or rules mistakes, please let me know. I’d rather fix them than accidentally confuse anyone mid-game.

Hope they’re useful to a few fellow sons of Russ.

Hi all,

I'm still learning the incredibly deep game of 40k and I'd like to take a 1k list to an even coming up.

I was hoping someone could explain how deep strike differs from reserves and/strategic reserves.

Here is the list I'm thinking of playing to help me explain the issue:

Imperium - Adeptus Astartes - Space Wolves - Stormlance Task Force

Rune Priest in Terminator Armour [Crucible] (75pts): Warlord

Wolf Priest (70pts)

5x Intercessor Squad (80pts)

6x Wolf Guard Headtakers (170pts)

5x Wolf Guard Terminators (170pts)

6x Wolf Scouts (105pts)

5x Wulfen with Storm Shields (100pts)

3x Thunderwolf Cavalry (115pts)

3x Thunderwolf Cavalry (115pts)

I'd like to put the Wulfen in Reserves for round 2 or 3 and I want to add the Rune Priest leading the Terminators (245pts) into Deep Strike turn 1 with the Wolf Scouts saving their spot for them.

I think you can only put 250pts into reserves at 1k points, but someone else told me Reserves and Deep Strike are different pools, and that I could put 500pts into reserves (250+250).

I'd really appreciate it if someone could explain this to me.

Saga of the Great Wolf & Core Stratagems (Simplified)

Edit: This is an update on this project for the Core Stratagems only.

I’ve been working on a new set of printable stratagem cards for Space Wolves players, ready for 11th edition.

The idea is simple: if you’ve got a colour printer and some old trading cards in sleeves, you’re sorted. Print the sheets on A4 paper, cut them out, slide them into sleeves with a spare card behind them, and you’ve got a small stratagem deck for use at the table.

Here’s the current Google Drive link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RhOpFaKXJqSD-TJ8ijddhLOg65XXMCAJ/view?usp=drive_link

These are intended as quick-reference aide-memoires during games rather than a replacement for the official rules, so please check the official wording if anything is unclear, although I have managed to get them close to word-perfect while still making them readable.

I made the cards using Magic Set Editor, with custom artwork created in a bright, clean comic-book style inspired by vintage 1980s war comics and early Warhammer energy. The aim was to make them readable when printed, easy to spot, and thematically aligned with Space Wolves, so they could be used mid-game without having to flick through books or apps.

At the moment, this is a work in progress. I’ve started with the core stratagems, with army rules, detachment rules and detachment-specific stratagems to follow. I’m only likely to make detachments I play, but I will make more when I have time.

Hope they’re useful to a few fellow sons of Russ.

Feedback welcome, but after 10 hours of making these monstrosities, you’re better off making your own with Magic Set Editor if you want original art or something less… absurd. Also, yes, it is AI slop, but it’s fun slop :)

For Russ and the Allfather!
