An idiot reviews the FX7, and takes .308 out to 1100 Yards.

An idiot reviews the FX7, and takes .308 out to 1100 Yards.

First off, the details:

  • Action/Barrel: FX7 barreled action, M24 profile 22" .308
  • Chassis: MDT XRS Chassis with the forend weight, one stock weight, and a piece of bar stock shoved in a hole
  • Trigger: TriggerTech Diamond
  • Optic: Bushnell MPED 5-30
  • Mount: American Rifle Company M-BRACE Scope Mount (super good)
  • Suppressor: Old-ass Sandman-S MIL

Anyway, today was my first time out to the range with my FX7 assembly using actually decent ammo. I took it out previously with some 168gr Aeromatch loaded with some amount of IMR 4064 from last year. I got a rough zero and sent it out to 1,000 yards with shockingly little effort.

Today I took it out with 120 rounds of 43.5 grains of AA4064 behind a 175 SMK in virgin Starline SRP brass, with a 20-shot velocity average of 2,707 FPS. I shot four 12-round groups, with the one below being the absolute average. The smallest was 0.89" and the largest was 1.22". Also, this is my first time with anything over a 1-8x LPVO and my first time ever attempting PRS-style shooting. The rifle, I feel, can do better than this average and is probably solidly sub-MOA.

Got to say, AB Quantum is freaky good. I had to make ZERO corrections on its solutions out to 1100 yards.

The rifle was able to make hits on every target. I made a clean sweep from 300 to 1,100 yards, firing one round on each target at 50-yard intervals. At the end, I sent 6 rounds one after the other at the 33" plate at 1,100 yards, hitting it every time. I also went 4/6 on the IPSC target to the right of it.

I left my phone-to-spotting-scope adapter at home, so you can barely make out the flashes from the target light on my iPhone, even "zoomed and enhanced." I had a 6 MPH wind from about the 4:30 position, and a pretty good sweeping wind at mid-range of about 10 MPH. Here is better proof as I take an 1,100-yard shot through my iPhone camera.

So, the rifle is accurate. Amazingly so, especially considering I think I paid $800 shipped for the barreled action, and the fact that I suck but now think I'm hot shit.

So far it's had 300 rounds through it—and maybe 600 rounds of finger-banging it in the garage with snap caps—and I have had zero issues. There are no feeding issues with MDT metal mags, hybrid mags, or Magpul mags. No extraction or ejection issues, either. I've seen posts here talking about the extractor being weak, and it's certainly not stiff, but again, no issues. I had one single light strike on one of my reloads, but after I went home, my PTR-91 didn't set it off until the third attempt, so I can't blame the rifle.

It started out..not rough but not smooth either. Somewhere between my brother's B14 and a Tikka T3. But now its honestly just as good as the T3's I play with at Scheels.

I really want these to take off, I originally wanted a Aero Solus, but the company going into death throws and the price hikes made me not want to touch them. The Fx7 has alot of the same features, low angle bolt throw, integral rail, triangle bolt lugs. Anyone who wants a Aero, should REALLY look here, I couldn't be happier.

Now off to place 1st of 1 in Tactical for my local June PRS match in June.

When you walk into a pawn shop and "In the Arms of an Angel" starts playing...

Well, I happened to come across yet another rare bird. Factory Nickel CZ83, a very early post communist commercial model. No crossed swords, no lanyard, definitely an American market gun with the AWB magazine.. CZ-USA came about in 97' but imports didn't really pick up until 2000 and I've never seen one of these post communist nickel plated models older then 2001. Mechanically it is in perfect shape, and seems to have a very minor round count judging by the inside of the mag well, the frame where the barrel mounts (will get rubbed mirror shiny with use) and the ejector still having all the blueing. The trigger guard has faded blueing but I've seen NIB models with that, I don't know what the process was but the transition from the painted on finish to the blueing back to the painted on was but they didn't produce great results.

Poor thing was Filthy. It had like a weird red crusty grime everywhere, trigger linkage, under the grips. Kind of like old ATF fluid. Also just..dirt in general.

Here is is cleaned up with its cousins:

My plans are to throw mepro sights on it like my 82, and get some nice wood grips to go match my 75SS.

I fully intend to carry it from time to time.

CZ82/83 are some of my absolute favorite little guns. These were the G43x style guns of the day, were as before you had tiny single stack .32's and .380s vest guns or full size duty pistols, these were full duty pistols shrunk, look at the frame and features, its overly over built and deigned with really nice triggers. the trigger on this 83 reminds me of my well broken in SW 586, buttery smooth long DA pull and nice short, slightly mushy SA.

Question on Ultrasonic cleaning and nickel plating.

I got a pawn shop project of an excellent shape but very dirty and dry CZ83 that’s factory nickel plated. They are kind of a pain in the rear to detail strip so I want to ultra sonic clean it, but I know you have to be careful. Am I safe to use a mixture of water and Ballistol, or should I use dawn or what? I know enough to not use anything that’s strips copper, so I think either of those is fine but I’ve seen enough people destroy stuff with their cleans to be worried.

A $5 piece of 1/2” brass round stock, a dremel, and a pass with electrical tape and you too can add exactly half a pound of stock weight to your XRS.
