Three Methods Of Journalling According To My Reckoning

I recently reread this article on solo RPG journaling and structuring sessions on Substack. The author, The Holly Roller, shared their technique, which I found both logical and neat.

Though I must admit, I think I would find it challenging to implement because I currently write quite a lot for each session. The article did prompt me to compare their approach with my own and ask myself: **Could I reduce how much I write and still enjoy it? And is there a middle ground between the two?**

Building on The Holly Roller’s idea, which I’m labelling Method 1, I then landed on two other main journaling methods:

Method 1 — The Session Summary: A concise record of the important events.

Method 2 — The Narrative Summary: The whole adventure told in order, but routine material compressed and just the important scenes and/or dialogue expanded.

Method 3 — Full Narrative: Detailed scene-by-scene play with full dialogue, actions, descriptions, combat, and all the little details.

Vote on your prefered method. Let's see what's the most popular.

There is one caveat, the mechanics of the play loop are recorded elsewhere.Things like oracle rolls, skill checks, combat rolls, and other mechanics aren’t included in this discussion. I’m looking for storytelling.

29 NPCs in my solo campaign. Is it um… too many?

For context, I’m currently playing a Level 7 Human Fighter in a solo D&D campaign set in Baldur’s Gate in the Forgotten Realms.

I’m 8 episodes into the campaign, and while looking through my journal I realised I’ve already accumulated 29 NPCs, all with a short bio and some lore. Some are recurring characters that I interact with regularly, some I’ve only met once or twice, and others are ongoing enemies or faction contacts.

I can keep track of them all because I keep good records, but it got me thinking: should I limit my recurring cast, or just keep adding NPCs naturally as the campaign grows? I’m honestly not sure.

So, my three questions about NPCs in a solo campaign are:

  1. How many NPCs is too many?
  2. Have you found a sweet spot?
  3. For those with longer-running campaigns, how many named NPCs did you end up with?

Why Is Baldur’s Gate’s Road Network Non-existent?

Am I missing something or what?

Looking at the Sword Coast map on D&D Beyond, Baldur’s Gate seems to have very few roads in or out of the city. There is no direct road northeast to Boareskyr Bridge or the Trade Way for example.

For such a big city, that seems strange. Surely not every traveller or caravan would take a barge along the Chionthar to Scornubel?
