How the Malinois became the go-to dog for security forces around the world

Lean, short-haired and seemingly tireless, the Belgian Malinois has travelled a long way from the fields where it once herded livestock.

Today, the breed works alongside police officers and soldiers around the world, searching for explosives and pursuing suspects.

Brussels Mobility Minister Van den Brandt says the idea that a €30,000 vehicle is a passport to freedom is “the biggest hoax ever”.

The minister has set her sights in particular on the so-called sports utility vehicles (SUVs), which are proliferating in the Belgian capital as across Europe. Van den Brandt considers they take up too much space – they are too big, heavy and dangerous for a densely populated city.

INTERVIEW: Why Europe must leave the 'Stone Age' of mosquito protection

Olivier Briet (European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control): Invasive mosquitoes transmit diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika. At the moment, we count around a thousand cases per year, so it’s still negligible compared to many other public health issues. But we have really seen a steep increase in the number of cases and outbreaks, and we are worried that these trends will continue and that these diseases will become established in Europe.

It's not just the tiger mosquito menacing Europe...

"Most of the cases we’ve seen have been transmitted by the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus," Oliver Briet from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control told Euractiv. "But we have also seen the arrival of Aedes aegypti. The common name is the yellow fever mosquito. It is the equally evil sister of Aedes albopictus, as it also carries dengue."

"So far, we have established populations nearby on Cyprus and Madeira. The mosquitoes in Madeira are known to have come from Latin America, and they’re highly aggressive biters and very resistant to all kinds of insecticides. They were responsible for a major dengue outbreak some time ago. Just recently, we’ve found some eggs in ovitraps in Luxembourg."

Belgium faces human rights action over PFAS contamination

Environmental lawyers have lodged a complaint with the Council of Europe over Belgium’s failure to tackle some of Europe’s worst contamination by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), persistent pollutants for which there is no agreed safe exposure limit.

“I fully understand the concerns expressed; they are legitimate and I have long shared them,” Belgian environment minister Jean-Luc Crucke told Euractiv.
