Question Cénotaphe de Du Guesclin

The first flower of the season: 'Archiduchesse Elisabeth' 🌸

the very first bloom of this absolute beauty in my garden. It’s an old rose variety from 1881, dedicated to Empress Sissi. 👑
I got it from the historic French nursery Roseraie Ducher (established in 1845), and it is living up to all expectations. The flower is large, beautifully double, with a gorgeous satin pink color and subtle mauve undertones. But the absolute best part? The scent is incredibly strong and sublime. Plus, the stems are nearly thornless!

Olive tree with collar rot removed the buried fabric that was trapping moisture, cambium still green above the damage. Can it recover?

Hello all,

My olive tree (~2m tall, South West France / Gironde) was slowly dying. We discovered the previous owner had buried a landscape fabric tightly around the base, trapping moisture against the bark for years — classic collar rot setup.

We removed the fabric and found the damage: bark is gone on roughly 50% of the circumference at the collar level, exposing orange-brown wood. The remaining side still has intact bark.

Site conditions:

•	Full sun exposure — the tree sits in an open front garden with no shade, receiving direct sunlight from morning to evening. Currently going through a heatwave, which means the newly exposed bare wood is getting hit hard with no bark protection
•	Soil: pure sand + coarse gravel — drainage is excellent, water never sits. The previous owner had placed white gravel and coarse sand directly around the base, which drains almost instantly after rain or watering. Zero waterlogging risk going forward now that the fabric is gone

The encouraging signs:

•	Scraped the bark higher up on the trunk → cambium is green
•	The tree is still producing olives this season
•	No soft, wet, or actively rotting wood — the exposed areas feel dry and fibrous
•	The exposed wood shows a clear demarcation line (dark border around the damage), suggesting the tree attempted to compartmentalize the infection

What I’ve done so far:

•	Removed all the buried fabric
•	Cleared gravel away from the collar (keeping it exposed and dry)
•	Planning to apply Bordeaux mixture on the wounds
•	Planning to remove the olives to redirect energy toward recovery

My questions:

1.	With green cambium above and active fruiting, is partial girdling at the collar survivable long-term?
2.	Should I apply white arborist paint on the exposed bare wood to prevent sun scald during the heatwave?
3.	Any risk of Phytophthora still progressing even after removing the moisture source?
4.	Realistic timeline for callus formation on a wound this size in a hot, dry climate?
5.	Is removing the olives actually beneficial for recovery, or does the tree need the photosynthetic output more than it needs the energy savings?

Location: Villenave-d’Ornon, Bordeaux area, SW France. Climate: warm temperate, currently heatwave conditions.

[TOMT][PUZZLE][1980s] Jigsaw puzzle of a kid’s bedroom crammed with toys — futuristic/neon vibe, with a Darth Vader (and maybe a cat/panther)

Hello all,
Trying to identify a jigsaw puzzle from my childhood, seen in France in the 1980s.

•	It was an illustration / drawing, not a photo.
•	The view was straight-on, from inside the room.
•	The scene: a child’s (or teen’s) bedroom absolutely packed with toys.
•	The style felt a bit futuristic, with neon lights — an idealized “cool room” look, possibly airbrushed.
•	Among the toys there was a Darth Vader.
•	I’m fairly sure there was also a feline somewhere — a cat, or maybe a panther (very 80s airbrush motif).
•	Brand unknown — possibly a European maker like Heye, Nathan, MB, Schmidt, or Educa.

Any leads appreciated!
