College in the Woods 😍

We moved our daughter in this weekend. I don’t know about other buildings at CIW, but at least Oneida was beautiful! I got worried reading some old posts that CIW is old and dingy etc. that their new Reno was only just a new coat of paint, so I had low expectations. Wow, I was actually impressed! They got all new furniture. We heard everything online and in person saying to get a mattress pad but the new Mattress is quite plush and thick and she told me that she’s going to remove the mattress pad because it’s sinking her in a bit too much. Welp, that was a hundred bucks I didn’t need to spend. The bathroom was completely brand new, and even had some design considerations, not just standard “school” aesthetics. Tiles modern decorative aesthetics, bathroom was so spacious and nice. Nothing too fancy, but certainly at least a new holiday Inn- level. I thought the lobby was also nice with 2 elevators. She has an amazing view with big, almost wall to wall window (though wall to wall is a short distance lol)

Just commenting here for anyone in the future curious of freshman building at CIW. I’ve toured several east coast public and private schools and this is one of the top on my list. Highly recommend!

Do people stay connected with someone fired from their company?

I just started a new role recently, connected with one of who would have been my direct report on LinkedIn the first week I was there. Within two weeks of my arrival she was fired by the company - unrelated to my onboard. I didn't know her very well, but after reviewing her performance, I would be surprised if she didn't see it coming. Anyway, we are now looking to fill this role, but I feel very uncomfortable to be still connected to her on LinkedIn because I want the option to be able to put feelers out to my network, but she would see my post. I was thinking of removing the connection and blocking her so she can't see my posts, but it feels so cold to do. I didn't connect with a lot of people yet in this company, and we have two mutuals still. Curious to see what other have done or would do here.

Can you just search for those with open to work banner?

I know people hate on LinkedIn job board, but having been on the side of a job seeker, it actually wasn’t bad for me. Got all my interviews from LI, and more than half from easy applies. Ultimately I landed my role from a LI application so I can’t complain.

However, now that I’m on the other side, looking for a very specific profile and want to search those open to work using my key word, location, and those with open to work banners. Is this even possible?

Questions for current accounting majors

Our family likes to plan ahead and I was just curious to what to expect. My daughter is starting Bing next month as an accounting major. For current students there, what did you all do the summer after freshman year? Do most have internships that first summer? And if so, anything you would have liked to have known starting freshman year to prepare to best set that up? When did you start looking and were your leads for internships through school or an individual effort? Family and friends’ rec’s?

Is it too early even think about that? my daughter can hold her own, and I’m sure she will be fine but this is more a curiosity for me as the parent. She’s my first going to college and I find myself worrying too much about everything. Im sure I can ask these questions at orientation later this week but wanted to hear from current students. Thanks in advance!!

How do you verify claims on a candidate’s resume?

I interviewed one person who didn’t have very senior level roles on his resume, but his claims felt very mismatched. On a business development role, he claims he generated XMM revenue for the company X by landing a deal with a huge tech company. Also says he increased customer engagement by 33%. These kind of metrics. Sounds amazing but how is he getting these figures and data? I feel like his level based on his title seemed very entry level, a specialist. Also Has large gaps and has other personal projects filling gaps. It all felt very sus.

I know many are encouraged to add results and metrics to their resume, but how do you really verify that they’re true if it feels mismatched to the role they were in?

Is it difficult to make it into one of Bing’s orchestra or other ensembles as a non music major?

My daughter originally was going to major in music performance for flute and we toured music schools and conservatories until she did a 180 and changed her mind to go into accounting and will be in SOM this fall. She plans to stay active in music through college with clubs and orchestral opportunities. She plans to audition.

Is it really difficult to make it into Bing’s orchestra as a non music major? I’m biased 😂 but I think she’s a high performer. Was in youth orchestra all through HS and was in regions in sophomore year.

Just trying to gauge if this is a reasonable go to have or not. Thanks in advance!

Time to say my bitter sweet goodbye to this community

I have a bit of survivor’s guilt leaving this community as it was there for me at my worst. After a rough period like many of you, I’m sure our stories are very similar, I am starting a new role in 2 weeks.

Just want to say, hang in there and I wish an end to all of your hell soon.

I don’t know if it will help but wanted to leave behind what worked for me, a senior/exec level who wanted to pivot out of my creative industry into more business focused role that was somehow still relevant to my past experience.

  1. Redid my resume to speak in the language of the roles I wanted to apply, but did not cater it to each and every application. I did at the beginning and realized I wasn’t getting responses either way, so I stuck to my master one.

  2. Got this tip from a pro-recruiter: seriously put a lot of thought into LinkedIn profile. Use the about section to your advantage and make sure it show what you can do for the company. I had bullet listing of my specializations after a summary. In your experience section, don’t just add what you did and its outcomes, give a brief summary of what the company does and did so well. You’re talking up the company you were with basically.

  3. Get two recommendations on your page and add two featured work.

  4. I had no successes with Indeed, ZipRecruiter, or the hiring cafe. My leads somehow only came from LinkedIn and most of the from easy applies. I know people crap on them, but it worked for me only if I was quick enough to apply within 24 hrs of posting. After that, I didn’t even bother.

  5. I stopped applying to applications that required you to retype everything. Got not one lead this way so I stopped all together.

  6. Being in a niche field, there aren’t many opportunities out there and perhaps this was the most frustrating part. I would hear people say they applied to over 100-200 places. I would be lucky if I found 3 realistically fitting roles per week. Most weeks nothing. I stuck to those and applied only if I nearly perfectly fit the role, but I knew it would still be a challenge because my style of work still had to fit the creative style they need.

  7. I almost missed out on the opportunity I landed all together because I was so sure all inquiries would come via email. Mine came as a phone call from the recruiter. Thank GOD my caller ID showed the recruiting firm’s name because I never pick up unknown calls.

  8. Dress to impress. I don’t think I ever dressed unprofessionally, but never wore a blazer to a virtual meeting. Usually a button down. But this recruiter specifically asked that I wear a blazer if possible. Did so and on my final round with the CEO, was thanked for dressing for the occasion, that I’d be surprised how people show up these days. I know this wasn’t the reason why I got the role, but it did kick us off on a positive note.

  9. The most important one. I stopped scrolling LinkedIn and ONLY visited the job board. Don’t do that to yourself. It’s really hard to see other people’s successes (not that I wasn’t happy for them, but for me it made feel smaller and smaller).

  10. I did pro bono work in my community with local businesses so I could use it as a case study and continue to show professional activity. This would be fill any gaps I have as far as work type I wasn’t exposed to before.

To sum it up, I had 6 screeners, 4 of those got me to the final round, and from there 1 offer/acceptance. I took long stretches off a few times from applying to take on contract work but if you add up the application cycles all together, it would be around 14-16 months I gather.

Each rejection after the final round was really hard and I would be emotionally tapped out for days. The 3rd rejection came the hardest and I had to just check out form applying for a whole month. But at the end, the offer I have now is the best one from the bunch in terms of position, future growth, flex work setting, and pay.

Thanks again and good luck!

Size differences are wild for 14U!

My son who will turn 14 next month is on the slower end of growth. His voice just changed last summer and is just above 5’3”. He is getting stronger and I see a huge difference between his noodle-y stature from last summer to now I see visible shoulder/back/chest development but is still one of the smaller players among his teammates. Most are much taller than him but still they seem like a similar age group and they all get along so well. His size isn’t a concern or anything but we played against some crazy undefeated team. I thought some of those players were assistant coaches or something. One player had a full on goatee and I counted at least 4 who are at least 6’ with huge chest and back muscles and hairy legs like my husband’s 😂. They look like they can be my son’s guardians basically. Final score was something like 18-3.

Overall my son’s team did great with other games and qualified for Jr Olympics so I’m not worried about them at all, just am still in shock from this weekend.

When someone asks you to come at a certain time, can some people just can’t help but come 20-30 minutes early?? When you live only 5 minutes away, you know you don’t need to leave 30 min in advance. Saying “don’t mind me” doesn’t help. I MIND! I MIND!!! Whyyyyyyyyy do this.
