When did you first hear The Cure?

I'm sure this has been posted here before. But getting psyched about my pilgrimage to Manchester tomorrow and feeling nostalgic.

Be forewarned - I may be the oldest person in this sub. But cool to hear how others discovered them.

For me: it was 1981 - 8th grade, age 13. At the time I loved stuff like Bowie, T. Rex, The Clash and Iggy Pop.

In the U.S. we only heard good music on the college radio re-broadcast of the Peel show, which came on at like 2 A.M. on Saturday. I would always go listen with a girl I was friends with but also secretly in love with (of course.)

Holy Hour; Forever; Primary; All Cats Are Grey.* Sitting there in a dark room in Texas burning candles and incense, smoking clove cigarettes and smoking other things.

And that was it. I never have loved another band as much before or since.

*yes I had to look this up online. But we are talking 45 years ago.

Going to the UK

Question for the group. Going to England for 10 days tomorrow. Manchester to be exact. I'm not a big scotch guy so I am already having American Whiskey withdrawal. I can get behind an Irish.
Any Irish whiskey I should try over there that we don't really see in the U.S.?

Monthly Allocation

Going on vacation next week so I limited my budget. Both very dependable regulars though.

[FREE] 1 Extra Ticket to Interpol Tonight at GAMH - No Fees / App Transfer

Hey everyone,
I have one extra ticket to see Interpol tonight (Monday, Aug 10) at the Great American Music Hall. My friend can no longer make it, and I would much rather give it to a fan than let it go to waste or deal with resale sites.
SEE Ticket app doesn't allow ticket transfer via app so you would need to meet me at the venue to enter together. I can send a screenshot if interested so you can know it's not some scam. 🤘

Introduction

Hello. I am right at the two month mark from filing and moving out. I had many life events happen the same month the divorce happened (Dad unexpectedly passing, dissolved 20 year business/thus unemployed, 15 yo daughter needing treatment for mental health issues, etc.)

Not to sound like a sad sack, but it's for context. I've felt a fair amount of shame and general entropy for only just now this week starting to get my sh*t together.

But on the other hand I feel OK about it, since I think having such a "trauma tornado" naturally left me numb, stupid, disoriented, and dysfunctional for 7 weeks.

I am also older (56) and moved from a small town to a nearby large metro (San Francisco.) I owned a house with my ex, left with nothing except clothes, records, and books.
Then on top I have been strategizing on how to live in a 520 sf apartment after just leaving a 3500 sf home.

On the plus side, ex and I are amicable. Agreed to everything in writing, no lawyers. I see my daughter most weekends. Have some money to last a while. Have a therapist who has helped me prepare for a year.

So I consider myself fairly lucky despite the obvious sadness and foreseeable loneliness. Even though I knew it would be lonely, man it hits like a truck sometimes. Sex life has been DOA for many years. I suspect some of you can relate. Even almost more I miss the platonic friendship - as all of our friend's were "couple's friends"

But in two months I've put myself out there, started a couple of business ventures, bought furniture, and started rediscovering a lot of myself that had been invisible and forgotten for years. Not a bad start.

Substance Festival GAMH Oct. 22nd- 25th?

Wow so this just landed in my feed. I haven't been to GA in a while. Does the VIP mean a table upstairs?
I'm and old goth and sometimes like to sit, sue me. Tix are hella cheap for 4 days for floor. But if I get a table upstairs I might spring for VIP. Also, if you're upstairs can u go down to the floor for some sets? Not that old.

Small Club Tour 2000?

Did anyone else see one of these shows? I think they were part of the Dream tour where they split shows between small clubs and Arenas. I don't know if it was only in the U.S.?
Anyways, just reminiscing for a few reasons:

  1. Getting a ticket for Dallas on Craigslist was literally about 2 weeks of rent. And my (now ex) wife was cool about it.
  2. Robert and the band actually came out after and signed autographs, etc. I was way too star struck for any of that. But - we did lock eyes for a second and I think I even did a stupid goth nod and air-kiss
  3. I screamed like a teenybopper at the burly roadies to get the setlist they ripped off the floor. They laughed at me, but today, 26 1/2 years later - that setlist is hanging in my apartment. Above is a pic.
  4. (Doesn't include the impressive encore and haven't ever found it online. But I kind of remember it included Disintegration, Pictures, Lovesong, and maybe strangely Lovecats.)
  5. Well obviously seeing The Cure in 2000 in a club that was - maybe - no 850.

Who has Tattoo?

At 58, believe it or not, planning out my first tattoo. Already thinking about a second one and maybe Cure related.
If you have a Cure tat, I would love to get ideas. I don't want anything too literal.
Feel free to DM, as I understand this is personal and some may not want to post in public.

Manchester Question

I will be coming to this show from the U.S. What's the best way to get from my hotel to the venue? Do people there use Uber? I understand there is a train from Central Manchester that stops fairly close by?
Also if anyone has any particular recommendations for hotels, restaurants, stuff to check out, etc. I've added a couple of extra days to check out the city since it's a long trip. Not too concerned about price, more the vibe. I'm a chef by trade so I like places that are a bit posh but still funky, if that makes sense.

Ketchup with Chinese?

Just DoorDashed some great Chinese food. Roast Duck, crispy Pork, Lo-mein and Spring Rolls. Food was excellent, and I'm assuming fairly authentic SF Chinese (menu was bi-lingual, lady on phone sounded as if Chinese was her first language.)
I have to ask the Chinese Americans out there: it was delivered with four packets of Heinz ketchup in the bag. Regular old American Heinz. Was a bit confusing. Do you guys usually have ketchup with Chinese food? Was it because I have an Western surname? And what dish do people use ketchup on?

Manchester Show

This is about my second post ever on Reddit
Anyhow, I've just moved back to San Francisco last week after a divorce. I don't really know anyone here anymore, so I thought what the hell I'll log on to Reddit. Love The Cure and I happen to have some free time and some money and thought why not check out the Manchester show since there is no US tour this year.
This show hits all the pluses for me:
- I also love Slowdive, who is opening
- Not a festival show, which to me always means a longer set and better crowd
- Love to travel but sometimes it's easier in an English-speaking country
I'm still adjusting to being single after many years. I find I don't really mind doing stuff solo. And, the aftermarket tickets, airfare, and hotels are rather reasonably priced (by US standards.)
So I am close to pulling the trigger on this trip. I do think adventures are best shared. If anyone else is going to this show solo (or not) it might be cool to meet up. Nothing creepy - don't care if you are male or female - just other fans.
