I’m Farhaan, an Indian Muslim machine learning researcher and solo developer.
When I moved from India to Canada for a research internship, I faced a massive grocery dilemma that many of us in tech/expat life face: navigating unfamiliar supermarkets, confusing chemical E-numbers (like E471 mono-glycerides and animal rennet), and balancing my strictly Halal diet with my roommate's food allergies.
I got tired of juggling 2–3 apps and squinting at box labels, so over nights and weekends, I bootstrapped Belief Kit—a clean, 100% ad-free mobile grocery scanner designed for multi-dietary families.
⚡ What It Does & The Tech Under the Hood:
- One Scan for the Entire Family: Configure profiles for family members (Halal, Kosher, Vegan, Vegetarian, plus 14+ major allergens including dairy, gluten, nuts, peanuts, soy, egg, fish, shellfish, sesame, mustard, celery, lupin, mollusks, sulfites). In a single scan, it evaluates everyone simultaneously.
- Evidence-Based Auditing (No Vague Black-Box AI): Unlike apps that just give arbitrary stamps, it audits down to the chemical additive level. If an ingredient is dual-source (like E471 or animal rennet) and unverified, it flags it as Unknown and cites the exact manufacturer reasoning so people can make informed decisions.
- Live Camera OCR: For store brands or imported items without barcodes, users can point their camera directly at the physical ingredient label.
- Tech Stack: Built with Flutter, on-device Drift SQLite for sub-10ms offline local lookups, and cloud verification models for live label analysis. Completely ad-free and privacy-conscious.
