When to go to ER for irregular period?

Hi everyone! I’ve had my period for the last 3 weeks and I was spotting 1 week prior to that. I don’t have an OBGYN and I called 4-5 different places that don’t have anything till 1/27. I have an appt with a nurse at my PCP’s office in 2 weeks (my actual PCP is out of the country for several weeks).

My flow is normal for the most part, but it has been persisting for so long. I’ve never had any issues or irregularities in the 18 years I have been menstruating. I’m also having back pain, pelvic pain, change in BMs, fatigue, and lots of blood clots.

I went to urgent care today under my mom’s persistence, and as expected they said: stay hydrated, lower stress, and eat smaller meals, see endo, see gyno. Like no shit. I told her I had an appt for the endo in October.

I am under a lot of stress right now because I’m applying to medical school, but I typically experience tension headaches and chills, which I haven’t had yet.

Basically, my mom is insisting that I go to the ER, but I feel like they won’t do much either. So would now be a good time to go get basic blood work and imaging, or should I wait to see a OBGYN. Also my insurance expires in a few days as I’m turning 26. Any insight will be helpful, thanks!

Adding someone to reservation?

Hi everyone! I booked a reservation for a boutique IHG hotel in NYC for July. I want to add my sister to the reservation. However, the reservation is under my name, so will she be able to check us in if I add her? I will call the hotel to confirm, but has anyone had an issue where they confirmed at the hotel and were denied at check in? Thanks!!!

Irregular menses

Hi everyone! I am concerned about my period. I’ve never had irregular periods since I first started at 8, but ever since I turned 25 (now almost 26) my periods have been strange this past year.

I have not had any hormonal testing done (have appt w/ endocrinologist in Oct) and I’ve never seen a gynecologist. My periods haven’t been on time, and I missed a whole month as well.

I currently am on my period, but it’s been almost 2 weeks (maybe longer). My periods have never been more than a week long and usually are 3-4 days with only 1-2 days of heavier flows. There are some clots, but otherwise it’s just straight bright red and always present every time I go to the bathroom. I honestly haven’t change anything. My stress has been at an all time high as I’m applying to medical school rn, but other than that idk. I don’t take any prescribed medications and I’m not sexually active.

I asked my best friend who’s in PA school, and she said not to over think it because it’s probably stress. I’m just confused and worried because this is not normal for me at all, I think I’ve had like 2-3 irregular cycles when I was really young but nothing till now. Also sorry, this was all very tmi but I’m just stressed and I don’t have time to go to the doctors rn

DOs in surgery

Hi everyone! I’m applying to both MD and DO schools this upcoming cycle. My heart is set on MD, but I know my stats may not be the strongest, and I may have a better shot at DO schools.

I’ve always been very interested in surgery. I have a little under 100 hours of surgical shadowing, and I find the field fascinating. I also have 4,000+ clinical hours across primary care, GI, allergy/immunology, and the ER. From this experience, I feel pretty confident that I’m not interested in primary care or family medicine.

I was wondering how common it is for DO students to match into surgery and potentially specialize later on (my aim is to subspecialize - open to anything, interested in thoracic, vascular, ct, onco, plastics, trauma). What does that process typically look like? Is it still worth attending a DO school if my long-term goal is surgery? I would really appreciate any insight. Thanks!!!!

Edit: Thank you to everyone responding! I definitely feel more confident about applying DO. I honestly can’t see myself doing anything other than surgery that would make me equally happy.

Personal Statement Review

Hi! Are there any medical students or physicians who would be willing to read and review my personal statement. Any and all help/constructive criticism is appreciated. Thanks :)
