Help me to find a smart band/watch for iOS

I've been using Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Active with my Samsung phone for a couple of years now and it's been excellent for my needs.

However I've just switched to an iPhone and the functionality isn't the same. I don't have the same level of customisation with which apps can send me notifications on iOS. On Android, I could pick literally any app I had installed but on iOS, there are just a few preset options and everything else is grouped into "Other".

What I like about the Xiaomi Smart Band 8 Active:

  • Small and discrete on my wrist.
  • Notification customisation (on Android).
  • 14 day battery life.
  • Third party strap options/replacements available.
  • Innexpensive.

What I need a watch for:

  • I mainly just use my smart watch for notifications. Specifically calendar notifications. I work as an in-house photographer and I'm often on my feet, shooting in a studio and I'm not always at a screen or have my phone in my pocket. I can get really focused in my work, losing track of time, and I need a notification on my wrist to let me know if I get a Teams message or have an upcomming meeting in my Calendar.
  • To be able to notified of incomming messages and upcomming calendar events.
  • I'm not that bothered about the fitness elements, taking calls, playing music etc.
  • I don't need a big or bright screen. It just needs to vibrate for notifications.

Canon EOS R 8-bit C-Log ISO 25600 Test

It's so easy to get hung up on video file specs and base ISO performance that some people might be scared to push the limits of their cameras, looking to upgrade instead.

So I did this little test in the studio with a Canon EOS R, 1080p, original C-Log at 8-bit with ISO set to 25,600. Remember that this camera's Log base ISO is rated at 400. In-camera noise reduction was turned off and no noise reduction was applied in post. Sure, it's a bit noisy but not unusable in my eyes. I was pleasantly surprised at the results.

This was lit by a single lantern on a Aputure 300X. The 8-bit colour holds up well to a light grade.

Reversing Liberty Buds fins = way better fit (quick mod)

I recently picked up the Soundcore Liberty Buds and liked the idea of the fins, but even after following the fitting guide, they kept falling out due to my ear shape.

After some experimenting, I tried reversing the fins and they actually stayed in way more securely.

Problem:
The fins aren’t designed to be installed backwards. They’ll attach loosely, but a small T-shaped piece of plastic stops them from seating fully.

Fix (quick mod):
I used a Dremel with a cylindrical grinding stone to file down the stem of the "T" into more of a straight bar.

  • Takes a couple of minutes
  • Just remove a little at a time and test fit
  • They can still be clipped on the regular way if you want to go back to that fit

Result:

  • Fins now stay securely attached to the buds
  • Buds fit much better in my ears
  • They still fit in the charging case with no issues (even with Size 3 fins)
  • No need to remove fins when charging

Overall, way more comfortable and secure now, with a solid seal and no constant readjusting.
