I have accepted a postdoc position in the Netherlands but cannot find housing

I accepted a postdoc position in the NL 2 months ago to start in October, and I have not been able to find accommodation despite actively searching for a few weeks now. I've tried University housing services and real estate listings, and I have not been able to even secure a viewing, just straight up rejections or messages that the property has been rented. I gave myself 2 more weeks to try to find something and then I think I need to have an honest conversation with the PI. I'm really not sure what to do and am extremely stressed over this situation. Anyone with similar experience?

Unexpectedly solo parenting while working from home without daycare

My husband and I both work from home, and until now we had been managing to keep our toddler at home with us without daycare. Then, very suddenly, my husband had to leave the country because his father was in the hospital. That left me alone, with no daycare lined up and an important work deadline coming up in a week.

Since Wednesday, I’ve only been able to get about four hours of actual work done, and I’ve had a few emotional meltdowns because I simply can’t manage both full-time childcare and work on my own. Thankfully, on Friday I finally found a daycare that can take him for four hours a day starting Monday, so at least I’ll have some dedicated time to work.

I’m just really overwhelmed and could use some encouragement. I’ve been a mess

Anybody else has/had a runner - my 24 month old runs NON-STOP

I have a very active toddler - he loves to hike, can do serious uphill/downhill hiking, walks the steps without support, and runs really fast. We encourage him and take him on a hike/run every day but sometimes it gets exhausting. We often take him for a stroll on a main street in our town, which is fully pedestrian and he just takes off and runs back and forth, it's hard to make him stop, hold our hand, or just walk like I see many other children do. He screams - RUUN!! THAT WAY!!! and just takes off. Is anyone else's child like this? I wonder what his energy levels will be as he grows older and what we should prepare for. I'm already planning to sign him up for several sports activities but I wonder if this temperament can make it hard for him later in school. He does have chill moments where he sits and looks through his books or builds train tracks but as soon as he's outside - it's running time.

Accepted (verbally) a postdoc position and found out I'm pregnant the next day

I verbally accepted a postdoc position in another country and literally on the next day found out I'm pregnant. The contrast is for 2 years and the PI made it clear they want certain amount of output by the end of that term. I am currently conflicted, I have not received or reviewed the final offer yet and I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to show up 4-5 months pregnant and inform them that I will be going on a 4-month maternity leave shortly. In addition, pregnancy may prevent me (maybe) from some of the lab work (but most of it I will still be able to do). I'm stressed out about the logistics of it, too, but also that I'm going to let my PI down because of my leave and because when I was pregnant with my first, my productivity was way down. What would you do in my situation?

Accidentally ate seeds after colonoscopy with 2 small polyps removed, how bad is that?

Had a colonoscopy this morning and had two small (< 5mm) polyps removed. After the procedure, I went for lunch and had baked fish with some vegetables, but I also ate a small piece of bread that had small pumpkin seeds in it.

I only realized afterward that some post-polyp-removal instructions say to avoid seeds, nuts, and similar foods for a while. I’m now worried that the seeds could irritate the removal sites or cause some kind of complication.

Has anyone accidentally eaten seeds shortly after polyp removal? Is this something I should be concerned about, or should I just avoid them from now on and watch for symptoms?

I submitted a manuscript to PNAS. The initial editorial decision (send to peer review) was very fast, just under a week. However, it’s now been almost 70 days in “under review” with no status updates.

Is this typical for PNAS? At what point would it be reasonable to follow up with the editor?
