Why govt is not serious about pushing Ev adoption?
In the United States, toll-free lanes have been provided for electric vehicles (EVs), supplemented by subsidies .
China, heavily subsidized EVs until they achieved a mark of 25% of total automobiles sales.
Currently, EV adoption in the Indian market remains in single digits.
Already, some Indian states, such as Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, have begun taxing EVs at rates ranging from 5% to 10% or more . Both states endorse some sort of freebies for masses. When factoring in the central government's 5% tax on the ex-showroom price, the effective tax rate add up to 10% to 15%.
Charging infra is fragmented and unreliable. Guns being stolen, different wallets for each vendor, poor maintainance and upkeep by some vendors(BPCL).
Govt should reassess their policies and make necessary changes to give required boost in ev adoption and reduce overall crude oil imports. Ev adoption will cut crude import by manyfolds than ethanol blending.
