I think it might be the end for my Sony Bloggie - lithium battery issues

Now, this camera wasn’t originally mine. I’m 18, and as long as I’ve been around so has this bloggie. My mom owned it originally, and then passed it town to me when I was in elementary school - where I continued to use it until around the second year of middle school. It’s served me well, and I had been considering taking it with me to college to get some pictures of me and my friends and capture the old vibe of my elementary school selfies. I turned it on today, and noticed two things.

- the sides seemed to be popping open
- when I held it to my ear (when it was on) I heard a crackling noise.

I know that it’s a long shot, and all of the signs of a battery failure are there, but is there ANY chance I could get it replaced, or replace it myself, safely? Or is it just time to say goodbye?

I’ll be keeping it powered off and in a cold room until then, for safety reasons. I’m hesitant to throw it away because I’ve heard of batteries causing fires in garbage trucks and I’d hate to be the cause of something like that.

Going to college, but I still feel like I’m 12.

I never wanted to go in the first place, but when you have a mom who monitors everything you do, and works at a college (where she is still monitoring what you do, illegally) you don’t get much of a say. no gap year for lil old straight A me I guess! (eyelid twitch)
