I’m a high-mileage driver - should I go for a petrol, diesel or electric car?

I’m a high-mileage driver - should I go for a petrol, diesel or electric car?

While working from home is becoming more common, there are still many jobs which require you to be out on the road piling miles on your car. If you’re covering huge distances each week, you’ll not only want something comfy but also cheap to run.

Even an extra 3mpg makes a huge difference when you’re covering 30,000 miles a year, but with diesel becoming less popular and electric cars getting better by the day, which fuel type actually makes the most sense for high-mileage drivers?

Well I’ve crunched the numbers to work out exactly how much you’ll spend in fuel and charging on three long-distance cruisers: the petrol hybrid Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, the diesel Skoda Octavia and the electric Tesla Model 3.

The Volkswagen Golf diesel is dead

The Volkswagen Golf diesel has been dropped from the UK configurator after being offered since 1976. I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for diesel engines – the clattering sound takes me back to family holidays in my parent’s Ford Mondeo and days spent in my Dad’s Transit van – but when you look at the figures it’s no surprise that manufacturers are turning their back on this fuel.

The new BMW X5 is here - what do you think of it?

This is the new BMW X5. It's packed with loads of new tech, and will be available with petrol, diesel and electric power. A hydrogen-powered version will also be available, but not in the UK for the time being.

It's bigger than before, more spacious inside and the interior is a step up in terms of quality, but would you take this over the new Audi Q7?

Why is the Kia Sportage so popular?

The Kia Sportage recently surpassed half a million sales in the UK, and it’s currently the most popular family SUV on sale. It’s not the most stylish car in its class, nor is it the cheapest or the most exciting, so what makes it such a sales hit?

Well that’s what I’m going to find out. I spent a week with the Sportage to get an idea of what buyers love about it, and here are a few theories I have.

Living with a Cupra Formentor: would you pay £60,000 for this car?

This is Social Content Creator Cameron Kalare's Cupra Formentor, and he's been using it every day for three months to find out one thing: is it worth almost £60,000?

That sort of money could buy you an Audi S3, or even an RS3 after Carwow savings, so why should you spend it on what is essentially a jacked-up Volkswagen Golf R? Well over the past few months he's found there’s a lot to like about this car, but it also has its drawbacks. Here are all the pros and cons of the Cupra Formentor.

You have £300 per month to spend on a car - what should you buy?

Paying for your car monthly almost always makes more sense than buying it outright. You spread the cost over a few years, keep your cash in one place and you can often avoid a big loss in depreciation.

There are a few ways to spread the cost. You can lease your car, whereby you pay an upfront fee and a series of monthly payments, before handing the car back at the end of the term. This means you don’t have to worry about depreciation, but there’s no option to own the car.

You can also go for PCP finance. This gives you the option to pay a final balloon payment, usually around 40% of the car’s value, to keep it. If you’re looking for a used car, you could also take out a loan from your bank.

Here are three of the best lease deals, new cars and used models available through Carwow for around £300 per month.

New Skoda Peaq reveal: my honest first impressions when the covers came off

Skoda recently revealed its smallest electric SUV, the Epiq, and now it’s time to see its largest. The Skoda Peaq is a massive seven-seater flagship model with an all-new interior, an enormous boot and impressive range, and I’ve been to have a peek at it. Get it? Sorry.

I’m actually writing this from inside the Peaq at the launch in Geneva, and I’ve poked around the interior, tried its tech and checked out the space inside to find out if this will be a worthy rival to the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9. First though, here are some quick stats.

  • Price: from £51,980
  • Range: up to 390 miles
  • Charge speed (DC rapid): 199kW (10-80% in 28 minutes)
  • Boot space (seven seats): 299 litres
  • Boot space (five seats): 890 litres
  • Available to order from: September 2026

What do you think? Better than a Kia EV9?

Mat Watson reviews the new MG S9: German quality, Chinese price

Jaecoo 7 vs Audi Q3: China takes on Germany in a battle of the PHEVs

A few years ago, if you wanted to swap your sensible family SUV for something posh you sort of just had to accept that you’d be paying an extra £10,000 or so to get an Audi or a BMW instead of a Kia or Skoda. However, times have changed.

There are loads of new Chinese cars entering the market which seemingly offer luxury and tech at a more affordable price. Just look at the Jaecoo 7.

A plug-in hybrid version costs over £10,000 less than the equivalent Audi Q3, yet the interior feels almost as premium, and you get loads of tech as standard. On paper, you’d have to be mad to buy the Audi.

But should you be tempted by the Jaecoo 7, or should you pay the extra to get the Audi instead? I’ve thoroughly tested both cars, and I’m going to help you decide.

Here’s why the £20,000 Chery Tiggo 4 could be more expensive than the £30,000 Peugeot 3008

The new Chery Tiggo 4 offers an incredible amount of space and equipment for the money. At less than £20,000, you’re getting a punchy and economical hybrid engine, adaptive cruise control, twin 12.3-inch screens and a reversing camera.

All this comes in at less than the price of a mid-spec Vauxhall Corsa, a much smaller car, but it’s a different story when you lease.

The Tiggo 4 hasn’t been around for very long, so leasing prices aren’t that competitive yet. Right now, you can lease a much more expensive and premium car for less money though Carwow – the Peugeot 3008.

Right now, the 3008 can be yours for £263.88 per month with an initial payment of £3,516.55, bringing it to a total of £12,752.35. This is over three years and 30,000 miles.

The Chery Tiggo 4 is available for £302.40 per month with a £3,923.80 initial payment. This is also over three years and 30,000 miles, costing you a total of £14,507.80.

So if you're planning to lease your next car, make sure to check out the latest deals on everything in your price range. You could end up with something much posher than you expected.

This is what the Ferrari Luce should have looked like

When Ferrari unveiled the Luce in Rome, it caused a real stir. While the technology and performance are undoubtedly impressive, the design left many people cold. It doesn’t exactly scream “Ferrari”.

We couldn’t help but wonder what the Luce would look like if Ferrari had chosen to retain more of its classic visual DNA without sacrificing the revolutionary tech underneath. So, we decided to imagine it ourselves.

Mat Watson reviews the Chery Tiggo 4: I wouldn’t buy this car, but I think you should

The Chery Tiggo 4 is insanely cheap for the amount of space and equipment you’re getting, making it a really tempting proposition. Unless you’re into driving, like Mat Watson.

This is the new Chery Tiggo 4, and it’s a car which I personally would not buy. Despite this, I’m still going to end up recommending it to a lot of people.

I’m a petrolhead who loves driving, and if you are too then the Tiggo 4 is not the car to choose. However, if you’re just after something cheap, comfy enough and well-equipped, then it’s really hard to ignore.

After spending a week with the new Chery Tiggo 4, here’s my honest review.

Don’t want a Jaecoo 7? Check out these five great alternatives instead

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year or so, you’ll have noticed Jaecoo 7s popping up all over UK roads. It’s one of the best-selling new cars in the UK right now, which considering it’s a brand which has been around for less than two years is really good going.

We can see why it’s so popular. The Jaecoo 7 looks posh, feels premium inside, comes packed with kit and undercuts most alternatives on price. It’s not the best to drive, with wobbly suspension and vague steering, but for under £30,000 it’s still a bit of a bargain.

But what if the Jaecoo just doesn’t do it for you? Maybe you want something which is nicer to drive, or perhaps you want a car from a more well-known brand? Well here are five alternatives to consider.

This is basically the new electric M3: BMW M Concept Neue Klasse revealed

The new BMW M3 will be all-electric, and the M Concept Neue Klasse gives you a first glimpse at what it’ll look like.

This is the new BMW M3. Well, sort of. It’s a concept car which previews future M models, but seeing as it’s clearly based on the i3 saloon which was revealed a few months ago, it’s safe to assume that the M3 will look very similar.

It’s packing some of the craziest features we’ve seen on any BMW, and there are controversial changes under the skin as well. This will be the first ever all-electric M3, but before you get your pitchforks out BMW is also working on a petrol version.

New Peugeot E-208 GTI costs £35,000: is this electric hot hatch worth it?

Peugeot’s GTI badge is back, this time on the E-208. This electric hot hatch gets 280hp, some clever handling upgrades and suitably sporty styling, but the range takes a hit.

  • Hot hatch based on Peugeot’s popular small hatchback
  • Prices start from £34,995
  • Lower, wider, and more aggressive styling
  • Motor makes 280hp, with 5.7-second 0-62mph time
  • Limited-slip differential for better handling

The Peugeot 208 GTI has been off sale for over seven years, but now it’s back – and this time it’s electric. The new E-208 GTI has styling upgrades which hark back to the iconic 205 GTI from the 1980s, but it has a lot more power than that car.

With 280hp on tap, it’s more than twice as powerful as the 205. It’s also got some clever suspension upgrades to make the already nimble E-208 even more fun to drive, and prices start from £34,995.

Would you pay that much for an electric hot hatch, or would your money go elsewhere?

Toyota is building a new Celica, and I’ve been on track in it – mid-engined sports car coming in 2028

Toyota is working on a new, mid-engined sports car which Mat Watson reckons will be the new Celica. He’s been to Japan to learn more about it from Toyota’s engineers, as well as to drive the concept version.

Rumours of a new mid-engined sports car from Toyota have been floating around for a while now, and many people believe that it’ll be the rebirth of the MR2. However, after spending a few days in Japan chatting to people at Toyota, including chairman Akio Toyoda, I don’t think this will be the case.

The MR2 was rear-wheel drive, and it topped out at around 240hp. This new car is all-wheel drive, and it could have close to 400hp. The return of the Celica has also been confirmed already, whereas the MR2 hasn’t. That’s why I reckon this is the new Toyota Celica.

Development of this car is well underway. The engine and suspension is being tested in a GR Yaris called the M Concept, and after some time on track in this car it has utterly blown my mind.

I'm living with the Skoda Fabia 130 for six months - AMA

This is "my" Skoda Fabia 130. I'm about one month into my six-month test of this car, and so far I've got mixed feelings about it.

There's no denying that the standard Fabia is a brilliant small car. It's spacious for its size, comfortable, solidly built and easy to live with, but the 130 is meant to be the sporty, exciting version.

It has a 1.5-litre petrol engine, which in the normal Fabia makes 150hp. This one has been tuned up to 180hp, so it certainly feels nippy enough. It's also averaged 51mpg over the last 2,000 miles, which my wallet is grateful for.

However, part of the reason the fuel economy is so good is I rarely drive this car in a spirited manner. The engine is quite vocal when you rev it out, but not in an exciting way. It almost sounds like it has a CVT. It's also not that engaging through the corners, so if you're after hot hatch thrills then I'd look elsewhere.

I do think the 130 looks great though. I like the Race Blue paint and contrasting black roof, and the 18-inch alloy wheels help it stand out (although you can get these as an option on other Fabias). The twin tailpipes are unique to this car though, as are the extra fins on the rear spoiler.

I am enjoying my time with the Fabia 130, mostly because it does all the sensible small car stuff really well, while also looking cool. But at almost £31,000 as tested, about the same as the faster Volkswagen Polo GTI, I’m yet to be convinced that you wouldn’t be better off saving a few grand and getting the similar-looking Monte Carlo version instead.

Car designers unleashed: the coolest concepts in 2026 which could shape your future daily drive

Car designers working for mainstream manufacturers are usually constricted by quite a few factors. Each brand has its own design cues, safety regulations determine the placement of certain panels, and the accountants want to cut costs at every corner which curbs some of the crazier ideas.

But what happens when you let a designer come up with whatever they want, with no restrictions at all? Well students at the University of Coventry get just that opportunity on the Automotive and Transport Design course.

The final project on this three-year degree course is to create an entirely new automotive concept from scratch, and the level of creativity on display is something to behold. Here are five of the coolest final-year projects from the class of 2026.
