Custom doorbell phone

Thought I’d show off my custom doorbell that i have been building. Yes, I know I could have used a UniFi Protect one but it’s more fun making it yourself. (I am using UniFi protect camera for video & talk back)

It gives me a phone call, where you can hear, see and talk back through UniFi Protect camera kinda like you can do in the app but on a phone call

It was hard to get UniFi protect camera to support native streaming in a custom app but I have managed to decode the web socket that comes into the app normally so it adds little to no latency!!

Thought some of you would be interested

I did a video talk about the code -

I also have all the code on GitHub -

Gate phone, with talkback

Wanted to share my project of building a gate phone that comes into my IOS device as an call, it works by streaming the audio from UniFi protect camera, to the phone call so even if you can’t open the app you can hear it.

It also supports talk back thought both UniFi protect camera that have a speaker or using Sonos to play the audio (there is a bit of a delay there but it’s usable)

One of the main things I’m pleased I achieved was the decoding of the incoming websocket from UniFi protect to stream the video to the iOS device, I was going to convert or use like RTSP but that makes it complicated and slow.

Code is here : https://github.com/thomasdye12/GatePhone-Concept , it’s not a full implementation but all the key things you’d need.

YouTube video where I talk about it: https://youtu.be/P4YjMxAk5-Y

I built Custom controller for iOS

Hey all

I just wanted to share here as some of you might want / be interested, I built an iOS app just to do some of the basic controls of Sonos, if you aren’t interested in why the link is bellow.

I love Sonos and we have a crazy amount of them in our house, I know they are going far with building and fixing the app but It always needs to me update the app when I want to use it & then force a system update which seems to always break something no matter how hard I’ve tried to fix that. Yes I have been onto Sonos and it’s still happening.

Long and short, I built an app for iOS, it can’t do much no Apple Music or any of that stuff it just lets you control the speakers, group them adjust volumes all of the core basics at the moment. I will most likely add more features to it as I use and want to develop it.

Here’s the link https://github.com/thomasdye12/Sonos-Controller
It’s based on the node http API that has been built so technically it could be used remotely if you were so inclined, I have and I am that’s why I built it this way.

DIY pool build - is this crazy ??

We are thinking of building a pool as a DIY project, probably over the next year or so. I thought I’d ask for thoughts and advice

We are think of doing 15m x 4m x on average 1.5m deep.
this will be a deep end of about 2m and a shallow end of 1m

We are thinking of doing a pool liner as that is looking to be easier and actually only seems to be about 5k for a kit.

For heating we are looking at getting a heat pump of about 27kw to heat and I think that will be able to do it with a cover.

Obviously a very good cover would be needed to keep its cost down.

Would look something like the photo I have attached with an outline of what we are thinking.

I think that all the info

Hey all, I asked the other day about the ability to view the dashboard on Apple TV and show the data there.

Since then I’ve kinda made it work see attached link to YouTube short where I show it of.

https://youtube.com/shorts/zW5y66pUQ5U?si=7dXIYngaJ2gkurYu

I wanted to engage some understanding about demand and feature capability. Eg do you want a dashboard picker or do you want to it to be fixed to one dashboard etc. I’m going to build what I want but it might be easy to add some of this stuff in while I’m building it so would love to know what you’d like

if there is some demand I’ll out my code on GitHub for everyone when I have something !!

Before I go away and make this a reality, I want to know if anyone has built a grafana dashboard view for Apple TV. Eg it loads the dashboards as you’d see them online.

I don’t need any sort of interaction other than to maybe change dashboard.

I have a PW3 that I got installed a month or so ago, wish I could have installed that myself but I’m thinking of adding solar to it myself. The difference between the two quotes was about 12-15k.

It would have also been more expensive as the scaffolding would have been more complicated then they thought

Has anyone on here done that / got any thoughts. I can’t imagine it’s completely really.

I would just like to mention I do have an electrical qualification so I have a fair amount of understanding, sadly it’s not a qualification so I couldn’t become an installer for the pw3 not that I’d of done that for single install.

I’m just starting to look for quotes for heat pumps and going to try and do a heat loss calculation, I just thought I’d share my usage and be interested in what people think.

This is the usage from march this year so a slightly colder but not much colder month. My guess is really we need like a 10kw + heat pump to be able to handle this sort of demand for our house.

Very large house about 20 rooms and 2 floors.

Thoughts welcome

Just had solar added to the power wall, had it for about a month without any. We didn’t get much solar as we want to fully use the cheap electricity and then just use solar to get to the end of the day

however the powerwall is acting differently as you can in the graphs it’s not fully charging now and didn’t start at the start of the cheap window.

Anyone know why & what can be done about it
