Secret Destiny in Thrift Store, Chapter 2

If you read Chapter 1 of my adventure here ( https://www.reddit.com/r/agathachristie/s/NrkWyOnTZr ) this is the letter we found in the red book that prompted us to return to the thrift store. Before I share what we found on our return, which would be the equivalent of ‘spoilers’, I thought I would post just the letter so sleuths can consider some of the same questions we did. Put on those detective hats!🕵️‍♀️

For reference, the book was found in Pennsylvania.

After reading this, my husband was sure Josh and Ruth were having an affair. I was more convinced Ruth was in a very demanding and possibly dangerous job. And where was she? Europe? Maryland? Away for school? Work? Or was their relationship long distance to begin with? ✉️

And what CAN one get for a kiss on the mouth? 💋

My child had already searched for obituaries based on Ruth and our area, and for Ruth and the new location noted in the letter, but with limited information and no last names… we all agreed we needed to check the other books for clues. 🫆

That’s the same visit that landed my Christie book in my collection.

I’m curious if anyone here can turn up better leads at this point than we did. Or different ideas. 💡

I’ll get photos together for Chapter 3 shortly. No spoilers for those who want to enjoy the adventure with us!

Did I find a secret door to destiny in a thrift store?

My newest Agatha book might not be valuable, but it came with a priceless adventure! Did I find a secret door to destiny? I’m hoping you guys might enjoy unraveling the mystery with me. We’ll call this Chapter One.

I was in a thrift store on Monday that had a typical book section. Two shelves with assorted genres in no particular order. I’m a librarian, so I always have to look. 📚

I was just skimming titles when I noticed a pattern… a suspicious amount of books on violent crime. A handful could be someone’s casual interest, but the amount and titles here suggested something more serious. Or sinister? 🧐

I immediately began considering who the owner of this collection had been before donation. Studying criminology… to profile criminals? To get away with murder? ☠️

I imagined some young Jessica Fletcher type reading through the books to research her own mysteries. Why did I assume the owner was a woman? I’m not sure. I just felt connected to the collection and naggingly curious about it.

I was drawn to one book in particular and thought I might buy it. My plan was to hollow it out and store Clue game pieces in it. I’m that kind of person. ♟️

That was NOT this Christie book. This book came after the adventure began. The book I bought was Patterns in Criminal Homicide. When I opened the book, I found the note. But who is Ruth? Who is Josh? Why is she shared with criminals? I liked the idea of taking home a piece of the mystery for my own shelves. 📕

I feel like I need to share the start of this mystery with others who might appreciate it. If you do, I’ll continue the story of how I ended up getting my new Agatha book. It’s just a bit much for one post. 😂

New Maytag May Dissapoint...

https://preview.redd.it/dslnlmt4vn9h1.png?width=657&format=png&auto=webp&s=64bb80f4aab077c41961a4b0fccdd5d6c17bf5f4

I live in a house built in the 1800s. I went with my great aunt and uncle to purchase a Maytag washer and dryer in the early 1990s. There was an actual appliance store five minutes from the house with real humans who made sure they couldn't repair the old machines before selling the new ones, delivering them, installing them, and providing a "first run" to go over new features. I remember watching the store owner's wife show my great aunt how to properly measure the detergent right in the laundry room. I used that same washer and dryer in this house until about a month ago, when the leaking washer was beyond repair.

I went to Lowe's to get a new set. First of all, I had to discuss why I did not want my appliances to connect to wifi. Then I had to insist that I wanted knobs instead of a 'push panel'. The Maytag Pet Pro (Model #MTW5605RW and #MED5605RW) machines were apparently my best choice. (Spoiler Alert - the 'knobs' on these are just for looks. They still operate using a 'selection panel' that can crap out. If you're looking for an old school appliance, make sure you specify you don't want ANY digital panel function. Oops.)

I wanted to return these machines in less than a week, but Lowe's apparently doesn't accept returns after 48 hours. We decided to troubleshoot for a second week before contacting Lowe's again. The customer service chat informed me I could request a return approval from Maytag. My new Lowe's friend (serving me from the Philippines) was apparently paid by time and not customers served, so he was alright with staying on the chat with me for four hours while I waited for Maytag to respond. Maytag informed me they don't issue return approvals. Maytag will send "repair and replacement" support... but when the problem is the washer doesn't get things clean and the dryer puts pulls and holes in things, I really wanted a return and refund. 🤔 But at least Bob from Maytag Florida was in agreement that things shouldn't be this way. Customers should have quality products with quality service, and brand new machines shouldn't give me a headache. He too recalled the days when your friendly neighborhood Maytag Man was actually a human you could connect with easily.

We are one week out from the "repair" visit, waiting for them to bring a different screw and "steamer" cap in case that is what is pulling apart our clothing in the dryer. The repair guy, who is local and said I could buy future appliances direct from their company, said they are required to "repair" a bunch of things before a replacement of the same model could be issued. Someone with the same exact model hasn't been able to do laundry for months because they are methodically "repairing" piece after piece of her brand new machines to resolve a problem he has known from the start is a faulty machine. But they will "repair" until Maytag finally relents and allows a full replacement. Then, if she has the same issue, what? The repair person said he's relatively certain our problem is just the way the machine is designed, and even a replacement might have the same issue, but there is no option for a return to exchange for a different brand or model. I would have to SELL this "used" machine and BUY a different one. I have to laugh, because there are bigger problems in the world to cry over, but man... this is frustrating!

Now I'm stuck trying to make the most of things and I'm hoping this subreddit can help.

In terms of the washer... everything comes out smelling like body odor. Even brand new, unworn clothing and towels. We tried using less liquid HE detergent, more liquid HE detergent, fabric softener (which was a fiasco since there is no dispenser - but another post on here introduced me to the Downy Ball, so we'll try that in the future), more water, less water... the repair guy said that even though the machine is brand new, we should run an Affresh clean cycle and see if that helps. He also said it might be because we have hard water? He suggested trying beads, pods, etc. and then noted his wife makes her own detergents and fabric softeners from scratch. We use liquid Arm & Hammer with OxiClean and liquid Snuggle fabric softener.

In terms of the dryer... everything comes out with pulls and holes. We thought it was just that a new, 'stronger' dryer was wreaking havoc on our old, fragile fabrics. So when the brand new, unused clothing and towels also came out stinky and damaged, we were at a loss. And I was at a breaking point. (Hence my newfound friendship with the Lowe's customer service rep.)

I find myself needing to learn how to "do laundry" as if it is some new and complicated balancing act and I need your help so I don't go insane. (Or more insane?) Help.

NSFW: molting or…?

She doesn’t smell… and the last time I encountered a dead millipede it was a smell I’ll never forget. But she doesn’t look right. I accidentally moved her while refreshing the enclosure. She wasn’t buried, just under some moss and bark.

Species guess?

Found in Northeast PA, USA. They’re babies, I think. Not certain of the species because they’re lighter in color than the others I typically see here.

What do we have here?

Found in Northeast PA, USA. I haven’t seen these in my yard before. Guessing they’ve heard I spoil bugs so they decided to check it out.

How to evolve cubaris?

So I figured out if you feed wimpods enough candy, they evolve. But do cubaris work the same way? These two seem eager to evolve and I don’t want to hold them back from their destiny.

Cookie & Creme

Crème (as we saw in previous post) is definitely a male. I’m relatively sure Cookie is a female. (She is modest, not cooperating with intimate photos.) From these pics, do they seem the same age? Can anyone guess roughly what stage they may be? I feel they’re too large to be juveniles.

There is a third (Cookie 2) but she (again, hopefully female) is possibly molting.

Why did t anyone warn me?!

Snails might lay eggs, they said. Careful to cull them, they said.

So, I missed about 100 babies. 😬

But no one said they’d be so freakin’ adorable!

Look at lil’ dude nommin’ a snack on mom’s back. 🥹

Crème

I know he’s a male. Crème was quite happy to show the proof. (See last photo). But can anyone guess about how old he might be?

Who do we have here?

I found this Queen inside a hotel in Altoona, PA. She was frantically trying to get out a window that did not open. A bunch of other queens were already dead both inside and outside the hotel. It was still below freezing at night, so I tubed her and hoped for the best. She just started laying. I was thinking with the wings she might not have found a male.

ID ideas? Name suggestions?

I’ve got three new colonies and am wondering if anyone keeps their clay cultures in enclosures other than deli containers. I’m looking to display them a bit more decoratively, and to ensure no other insects get in. Ideas?
