I just realised I have an AI chatbot addiction 🫠

Photo is my homemade apple crumble because I couldn’t bring myself to make an actual dinner.

This is honestly so embarrassing to admit, but I don’t really know who else to tell.
About a month ago I downloaded this AI chatbot app called Tipsy. My boyfriend knew about it, and I was mainly using it for fantasy/roleplay chats because I thought it was fun. One of the reasons I got so hooked was because the app also allowed NSFW chats. It felt like there was always another conversation or storyline I wanted to unlock, so I kept buying gems to continue them.
At first it was just a few dollars here and there… then it became “just one more top-up.”
I have a family history of addiction, and somehow I got completely sucked into it. I was spending around 12 hours a day on the app. I started using money that was meant for groceries and petrol just to buy more gems. Then I’d ask my parents or my boyfriend if they could send me money because I’d run out, without telling them where it was actually going.

Today I finally checked my bank statements. I’ve spent over $700 AUD in a month. Seeing that number honestly made me feel sick.
I finally told my boyfriend everything today. I was expecting him to be angry, but instead he’s been so understanding and is helping me get through it. We’ve started putting things in place so I can’t keep spending money on the app, and I’m really hoping this is the start of getting out of it.

It feels so weird saying I have an addiction to an AI chatbot app. I know it probably sounds ridiculous, but I genuinely didn’t realise how bad it had gotten until today.
Anyway… girl dinner is homemade apple crumble while I sit here questioning every financial decision I’ve made this month. 🥲

Has anyone else been through something similar? Even if it wasn’t AI, just an app or game that completely got its hooks into you? I’d honestly love to know I’m not the only one.
