Making friends

I would love to meet with ex muslim somalis but the idea of meeting up with someone from reddit is extremely scary. Especially the fact that Im outing myself as a ex muslim.

I’ve seen posts in the past where people have asking to make friends but I’m wondering has there been any success stories of making friends from this reddit even getting the courage to see them irl?

Praying and wearing hijab

I wanna take off my hijab but the thing is that my family is very strict on prayer. Like they even have issues with me wearing pants instead of long skirts or abayas because it means it makes it difficult for me to pray.

I almost always wear pants when I go outside so they always question if I even prayed or if I wear makeup for long periods of time since I couldn’t possible make wudu

I’m so tired of this religion.

Fear and shame

22f. Starting to realize my upbringing has made me so immature for my age.

My family were critical and hated on a lot of things I did. such as the people i would hang out with (non muslims), the way i dressed, the music i listened to, shows i watched and even the way i spoke. It made me hide everything Im interested in.

It made me feel like i was constantly doing everything wrong and now Im just scared to live my life. I lowk feel like I don’t even have a personality anymore and I can’t connect with people because i don’t know who i am as a person

I feel isolated and I know that since Im an adult I can do whatever I want but I don’t know where to start and I’m scared that I’ll continue to live my life being a nobody.

No romance

Anyone else have a non existent love life?

I’m 22 but never dated anyone and I feel like I’m so behind compared to everyone else. Back when I was muslim I was thinking about marriage but now idgaf and want to start dating but I feel so inexperienced.

I grew up with barely any contact with the opposite gender and now I feel like there’s this awkwardness I have around them. also nobody really shows me romantic attention prob cus i’m hijab.

Hijab and age

What age did you start wearing hijab and what age did you take it off?

I was 5 when I started wearing it and 20 when I took it off (still part time though)

Prayer

Praying salat is the worst part about islam. I have a family that is pretty strict about it and we all have to pray together so it’s hard to lie about it.

I hate doing wudu especially in public so I always say I have it. Waking up for fajr also sucks.

Growing up I was only allowed to wear skirts and abayas because I couldn’t pray with pants. I also can’t get my nails done or wear makeup all day cuz of it.

Appearance

I feel like being raised in a strict Muslim house made me feel so ugly.

Wore hijab at a very young age, and the clothes I wore were super baggy and I had to wear sweater and long sleeves with my outfits to make it look modest. I also wore a slip on hijab with crazy patterns which also added to how weird I looked. I was jealous of the other kids who just got to wear whatever and got to show their hair.

As I got older I wore long skirts like the other Somali girls and it was hard shopping modestly so I just rotated the same couple of outfits. Buying clothes in the summer felt like hell because i couldn’t find anything.

I feel behind because im just now learning how to take care of my hair and finally start wearing normal clothes like a t shirt or a skirt above the ankles.

Treatment after taking it off

After taking it off, how did people treat you?

I’ve worn hijab basically my entire life and I feel like people assume my personality by thinking i’m overly religious, reserved and judgemental.

I’m hoping after I take it off people are nicer to me and that i stand out less

Strict siblings

Anyone else have overly religious siblings? it’s annoying because I feel like as I’ve gotten older my parents are less involved in my business and don’t really have the energy to police what I do.

Yet my sister still reminds me to pray, wakes me up for fajr, criticizes how I dress, judges who my friends are and shames me for not being religious at all. I feel like it’s harder to lie about things like where I am or what I’m doing because we are really close in age and she’s knows everything.

I know I don’t have to listen to her and she has no authority over me but it sucks that I can’t really tell her to stop without outing myself as an ex Muslim.
