Does anybody know of an affordable dupe for this shampoo?

Like the title states. I use Dechra’s Dermalley shampoo on my personal dog and cat to help with their skin issues (not suggested by a vet, just went scrolling through amazon one day for hypo-shampoo that’s safe for cats and decided to give it a try). I love its effectiveness and pleasant light apple (?) smell that isn’t overwhelming. I would love to buy the gallon version so I don’t run out as quickly at home, but it costs $140.

If anyone has any dupes that have a similar pleasant apple scent, are tearless (basically I could use it as a full body shampoo), hypoallergenic, and can be used on cats I would greatly appreciate it! (though it being cat friendly isn’t a must).

*edit: Now that I thought about it, the scent part isn’t a must. But I would like an affordable, tearless, hypo, all body shampoo recommendation.

Ask for a working interview or accept the offer? Are working interviews always the norm for grooming?

I’m a new groomer (been grooming for just a little over a 1 year) who’s been offered a job recently that I’m very interested in. We have already done an interview, they’ve seen photos of my grooms, I’ve already toured the salon informally during the interview, and we’ve already had 2 discussions about commission and pay.

Forgive me as I’ve only had one other job related to grooming (which honestly wasn’t the best experience or place start out in), am I right to ask for a working interview before accepting an offer? I really love what I’ve seen so far from the place (as in after the working interview I’ll probably be bringing home employment papers/contracts), but it feels wrong to not do a working interview before accepting the offer.

Can any seasoned groomers please help me weigh in on this?

Tex-Mex [beef & chicken fajitas with fried rice, and beans] and rice some experimentation

Store bought pre-seasoned fajitas with homemade beans (previously frozen for meal prep).

Decided to experiment with the rice. I like a lot of Asian dishes and had some plain sushi rice cooked the day before…I don’t like wasting so I thought why not try making a Mexican inspired fried rice! It was well enjoyed by everyone. In like fashion to my Mexican grandfather (my grandmother didn’t cook much according to her and my dad), there’s no measurements 😋 for the amazing rice. Will definitely try again. 👍

*edit: things in rice are purple/red onions, just using what I have.

Cat having dental issues while on prescription diet d/d. Can/should we ask vet about the canned z/d hydrolyzed food?

As the title states, our poor kitty is having a rough time trying to eat her dry Hill’s d/d kibble. Watching her eat, she tries to get a few bites but they look like they take so much effort for her to chew.

Yes she has dental issues, which we will discuss with primary vet when finances will allow for it, obviously she needs to eat (*edit: I don’t want any suggestions for raw or homemade foods, only prescription. She’s on it for extreme allergies on unknown origin that cause her to lick and chew her skin raw. We were going to start Atopica until we noticed her leaving so much food behind after meals).

I’m wondering if anybody else with kitties on Hill’s d/d dry kibble also feed the hydrolyzed canned food, if vets even do that? I’m asking because the canned d/d is on back order or out of stock on EVERY website, including Hills. Or are we gonna have to switch entirely to Royal Canin’s novel protein line? We are getting desperate for her to eat more.

*will also add: tried soaking the dry kibble. She kind of showed interest and licked a good amount, but never ate all of it.

Pros and cons of grooming at a daycare/boarding facility vs corporate vs private salons

So I’m at a crossroads of finding a new place to work at. I’m still a new groomer and have only ever worked at private salons my whole career.

I know that hearing from fellow coworkers that for corporate salons it really depends on who the manager or salon lead is, whether or not your life will be a living hell…..

As for daycare/boarding facilities, I don’t know. Is it better or worse than corporate or private? The place I’m eyeballing does regular grooming appointments and baths for daycare/boarding dogs when requested or needed. They promise a slower paced environment and that I get to build my own schedule? Which I find kind of hard to believe in the world of grooming.

Anyway, I would love to hear anybody’s experiences in any of these environments as I’m still new to this industry.

What can work to pull fish bones out of fillets? (instead of fish bone tweezers)

Fishing trip ended with us catching lots of fish, kind of our first time catching this many so we are kind of blind sided and scrambling with what to do (with cleaning them up more). I keep trying to get the bones to come out with regular slanted eyebrow tweezers, but they just aren’t gripping them properly and are kind of hard to pull out without ripping the flesh or them slipping.

Would something like medical hemostats or different kind of tweezers work better? I can’t buy any fish bones tweezers in person near me because no stores near me carry any, and being in the US it’s 4th of July tomorrow so online purchasing is out of the question. We want to get all 30-40 fillets deboned immediately today so we can vacuum seal and freeze for another day. Thank you for any help you can offer.

Is the Wahl KMC+ 2-Speed Cordless a good first clipper for a new groomer?

I know everyone must be tired of the: “give me suggestions for XYZ tool” posts, but i have to ask. I’m a new baby groomer looking to invest into their first set of clippers. I want something that will 1: last for 2-3 years or until I have the money to upgrade, and 2: something that is easy to get repaired should it be needed during that time frame.

Obviously being a baby groomer I don’t have the budget for a $400+ heiniger cordless clipper (cause I will still need to buy some guard combs and ideally multiple back up blades, but in the meantime it’d be used on my personal dog at home to do pads). So I remembered it was prime day and saw the KMC+ 2-Speed Clippers were on sale, are these good for my level of grooming?? Something that won’t crap out on me immediately? Is the mildly infuriating little metal piece on the end removable? I ask because I’ve been taught using cordless Andis clippers, but those are over my budget and I still want something cordless.

Prescription joint/mobility food 🆚 Regular food for large breed osteoarthritis + CCL disease management

Hello 👋 My first post here after lurking for a while. I’m going to start off by saying I will be talking to my dogs vet(s) and rehab specialist to get their specific recommendations, but I’m curious about others experiences with joint/mobility care foods. I will be using any advice to better guide my conversation with her care team, as the rules state, if it’s something that could help her.

I want to know the difference (and or I guess benefits??) between feeding my dog her regular dry kibble (currently feeding Science Diet Adult Perfect Weight & Joint Support Large Breed)+ Dasuquin with MSM (recommended by my primary veterinarian), versus 🆚 a prescription food for joint/mobility support. I know you’re wondering the specific“why”, so to make it easier I’ll list it out:

• Large breed, Labrador retriever around 7 years old.

• just had TPLO surgery, probably going to have the other knee done towards the end of the year.

• The xray/radiograph report said she has degenerative changes (or osteoarthritis as it was explained to me, X-rays were taken before surgery) in both knees. Hips were fine 😮‍💨, but it also mentioned bone spurs in her spine? Primary vet said since she’s not symptomatic right now, just something to keep an eye on.

• And she’s a lab so she’s had a history of weight issues, which we were diligently working on before she completely tore her CCL (obviously she’s now more restricted with strict crate rest for 8-12 weeks so losing weight will be difficult).

I’m open to what ever my vet recommends for her case specifically regarding maintenance and keeping her comfortable. But I’m wondering if prescription food for joint/mobility (maybe one with weight management formula? I saw some that were a combo of both) care have been used in situations similar and provided favorable results? I want the best for her, and I will pursue every possible avenue for that (diet included).

I finally had surgery 🙂 today, my experience for others.

I finally had my surgery this morning despite getting a cold 2 weeks ago. 🙂 Sorry if it’s a little boring and or incoherent, I’m still very exhausted/out of it. 😴

First to note: I don’t know what it was about fasting for surgery, as well as for previous tests for imaging/bloodwork, but I didn’t really feel the normal bloating and URQ pain while waiting in pre-op. I had biliary dyskinesia with a 35% EF which recreated my symptoms while doing the HIDA scan.

Coming out of anesthesia was like trying to wake myself up in the morning but fighting back and accidentally falling back asleep (all MASSIVELY amplified by the drugs I was given). I also was shaking controllable, I had a similar experience when I got my wisdom teeth removed a few years ago (the heating mechanism they used to keep me warm stopped it). My throat feels exactly how others have described, sore like I slept with the fan on or had drainage all night.

Pain is manageable/tolerable. Incisions themselves don’t really hurt after taking one dose of the prescription opioids I was prescribed. It mainly feels like intense pressure in my ribs and (again, what others said) almost as if I pulled/tore my ab muscles very badly. I’m surprised I don’t need help getting up or using the bathroom. I’ve just been sitting up extremely slowly and using my arms to pull myself up.

I’m very glade to have found this sub and grateful to read others experiences so I wouldn’t feel so anxious when it was eviction day.Thank you my fellow gallbladder-less people! ☺️ 🙏
