I found 15 needles in my Royal Canin food I ordered from Chewy

I found 15 needles in my bag of Royal Canin hydrolyzed cat food that I ordered from Chewy.

My parents have a cat and I have a cat who both eat this prescription food. My mom orders the food through Chewy and we share it, I typically take a large ball jar of the food back to my home with me. On Wednesday night I was at my parents house and I was petting their cat while she was eating. She was eating off of a feeding mat on top of their bureau. Off to the side of the mat, about 8 in from the kibble, were four sewing needles. I immediately blamed my dad of sewing something and leaving the needles there. He said it absolutely was not him. My mom and I were baffled. She suggested maybe they came out of the food but I said no way.

On Thursday something caught my eye on my kitchen floor in my own home and it was a needle. I had no explanation for it and mentioned to my mom that I found a random needle at my own house. We both thought it was extremely strange.

On Friday morning, my mom scooped kibble out of the bag, and there was a needle sticking out of the food in the scoop. I proceeded to take the food out of the bag and dig through it. I found 10 needles. (Yes, I dug through the bag with my bare hands. I'd already picked up five of these fairly large sewing needles, I was not afraid of them poking me. I realize now there could have been tiny needles in the bag that could have poked me but in the moment I was not thinking clearly. Chalk it up to me being plain stupid.)

The needles are all of different size but they are all sewing needles. I thoroughly inspected the bag for holes and did find one small one, but it is hard to tell if it is from a needle. It could be from a cat clawing it. Or like others have suggested, it could be a needle hole from the needle poking from inside the bag outwards. So at this point there's no way of telling if the needles were put in there at the factory, warehouse, distribution center, or during shipping.

I contacted Chewy and they asked for photos and lot numbers. I haven't heard back yet. I contacted Royal Canin, and they asked for the same thing. I have not heard back yet.

I have no explanation as to how we did not notice those first five needles come out of the bag. Maybe it was in the night when it was dark and the cats were begging for a 3:00 a.m. treat? I don't know.

Pet owners, please please please check your pet food. A dog could easily gobble these needles up. Thankfully cats are dainty eaters and our cats ate around them.

Disclaimer: I posted this on cats, pets, and mildly infuriating already, and it was removed on all three subs. While the majority of the comments were supportive, there were a lot of people who said I was making this up. I went into further detail in this post. My previous posts were condensed to get rid of (what I thought was) unnecessary details. But apparently it sounded "made up". I don't feel I owe anyone explanations about the details of my posts. The people who take it seriously will hopefully check their pet food!

I could not add photos initially because I was on the web version of Reddit on my phone and there was no button to add media. I have switched to the mobile version and I can add media now. I'm not trying to make either Chewy or Royal Canin look bad. I have been an extremely loyal customer of Chewy for many years and would recommend them to anyone. Their customer service is the best in the business. Royal Canin makes the only hydrolyzed food my cat, and my parents' cat, is able and willing to eat. It took years of us both vetting and battling skin lesions and ear infections to realize this food is the only thing that works for our cats. We did not notice anything off with the bag of food when we opened it. We had been using this bag of food for probably a week before finding the needles. Yes, the bags are vacuum sealed shut, but there is still lots of excess packaging so if there were a hole it would not be obvious that there is air getting inside. People are tearing me up for this but I don't care. I want to get the word out and want pet owners to check their pet food. Say what you want about me, call me names, diagnose me with a mental illness , whatever. If you think I am karma farming, the simplest way to combat that is by not interacting.

New Kitty OTW! Best food?

Hello!

I’m adopting a kitten (3-4 months of age) and I wanted some food advice. I’ve worked with cats before, but this is my first time owning one. Any tips would be great!

Currently I have (these are the kitten versions):

Wet food: Sheba, Tiki Cat, Fancy Feast

Dry food: Purina One, Nulo, Meow Mix, Kitten Chow

Toppings/Treats: Temptations, Greenies Smartbites, Tiki Cat purée

Old photo for pet tax reasons haha

Advice to getting homemade food more like canned food?

So I've been making my cats' wet food for a couple of months now. They get kibble in the morning and the homemade and store bought wet food for dinner.

It's a pretty simple recipe. Slow cooked chicken leg quarters deboned once the meat falls off (8lb bag from walmart). dozen Eggs (added while it's still hot), beef gelatin, 3-4 tins of sardines in water, water. Puree it all together. I've tried doing it not so pureed, but they didn't seem to like the chunks.

My cats definitely prefer canned food, but with 8 cats, it would be too expensive, which is one of the reasons for the homemade stuff. Some of them like it, but it's obvious that the canned food is still preferred.

I've tried mixing canned food with the homemade but none of them liked that.

What could I add to their homemade stuff to make it more like the canned food?

Bulk bought too much and dont want to waste them‼️ UK

Urgent ‼️‼️ hi everyone, i have one cat and she gets two wet meals morning and night, in the middle she has dry food but only a couple spoonfulls as its calorically dense.

I bulk bought far too much from excitement, did the maths and i have 2 years of food for her. Which i obviously cant keep for 2 years because of the dates and how slow i get through a bag.

I mix wellness core, scrumbles and wainrights, but have a 4kg bag of UNOPENED wellness core, completely new, originally £30, would anyone buy for £15-£20??

Im struggling with buying human food lol and dont want to waste the bag, but cant give a 4kg bag of wellness for free either :(

The best before is october 2027‼️ i just know i wont get round to finishing intime as i mix it with other brands, and she only gets about 20-30grams of the mix for lunch 😭

I have two, 1.5kg bags of wainrights grain free too, best before date is december 2026 but both unopened, i wont even end up opening these as i have other bags open.

Originally for both bags would be- £24 id litterally take £10 for both.

Again, i really would love to donate these to a rescue, but im living of of noodles right now, and this would get me through a bad couple weeks, (though i still have vet funds though im broke dont worry about that lol)

I dont know how this would work, maybe vinted or something, but if anyone likes the brands or would use them or has an offer, please dm me! :)

Getting harder to find specific food...

I'm in the US.

Cat is 14 yr old male. His entire life, he's eaten Purina brand food. Mainly friskies. Friskies dry food mainly, although several years ago after a bout of sickness wherein he refused dry, I did give him wet after finding out which ones he liked. (Friskies wet food, pate. Go figure lol) And since then, it was just that.

Except, about a year ago, he started getting fussy over wet food so I went back to giving him dry or rotating between wet and dry.

By now, we're down to two flavors. I used to buy him the 40 can pack of friskies pate cans (the seafood flavored ones) but I don't anymore because it's a waste of money. He only likes the salmon friskies pate out of all those flavors in that variety pack.

However, there's another flavor he enjoys which is the focus of this post. Fancy feast chicken pate. Not the normal one. The senior 7+ chicken. I bought him the regular version once, and he looked at me like "I'm not dumb, this isn't the right one" and turned his nose up at it. It HAS to be the senior one. (See photo i attached!). I assume there's some kind of taste difference? Dunno, I'm not a cat. But it's what he likes, and at this point, I'm just glad he's eating.

However, I've noticed in the past year that it's getting harder to find these in store. I have to specifically go to a pet store (not local, chain pet stores like PetSmart or Petco) to find them. My local supermarket used to have them, but now they only have the other flavor in the senior line, not the one my cat likes.

It's either just Walmart or pet store that i can find them. Not like friskies where even the local corner store has it type of thing.

Am I the only one having this issue?? Does this mean they're going to get rid of that line?? I really hope not because then the only wet food my cat will have is friskies salmon pate... Which i wish they made 3oz cans for because those cans are too big for him.

Cat not eating anything fish

My kitten used to eat fish just fine, just up until i started feeding her more chicken fyi i only feed her untamed but now she won’t even touch the fish food.

i’ve tried mixing it and putting just fish or half chicken half fish but she does not eat the fish at all.

does anyone know why she does this when she used to eat fish just fine?

I still have a lot of fish tins and i don’t want them to go to waste.

Cats suddenly not tolerating food they’ve eaten for years?

Looking for some food advice because we’ve been dealing with a weird GI saga with both cats.

Male (6) started having diarrhea in early June, followed by Female (5). our older guy went to the vet first. X-ray was normal, stool sample negative, and he was put on Flagyl. Since both cats had it, the vet thought maybe a stomach bug. Things improved and we started getting solid poops again, but it’s been back and forth.

Our girl recently had diarrhea again with a lot of mucus and possibly a tiny speck of blood. Her stool sample was also negative. Vet said the mucus points to colon irritation/inflammation and recommended another 6 day round of Flagyl. If this round doesn’t work, we’re bringing them back to the vet and he’ll most likely start looking at a diet change.

Both cats are otherwise totally normal; eating, drinking, peeing, playing, acting like themselves.

They’ve eaten the same food for years:

  • Wet: Wellness Complete Health
  • Dry: Blue Buffalo Wilderness Chicken

Has anyone had cats randomly stop tolerating food they’ve eaten basically their entire lives? Especially around 5-6 years old? Any food recommendations for sensitive stomachs/recurring diarrhea or mucus? im getting nervous lol

Dry Food as Supplement

Hi! My cat recently turned 1 and I'm transitioning her off her kitten food. She normally eats 2 wet meals and 1 dry meal a day. After much trial and error we landed on an adult wet food that she likes, Ziwi, but I still don't have a suitable replacement for her kitten dry food, ORIJEN Kitten Grain-Free High-Protein. I also keep her dry food in a Petlibro Granary feeder; so it has to fit the size rules for the feeder. I'd love to know if anyone has any suggestions for dry food options.

Dus, help a sister and her kitties out please?

Help! My cat is not eating much anymore

So I have a 13.5 year old female cat who I've had for almost her whole life. She has always been extremely picky, will only eat dry food and specifically purina fancy feast. She goes to the vet regularly and they have always said that as long as she's eating something then purina is fine. But recently (the past two weeks) she has been gradually eating and drinking less. She has always been very healthy, so when this happened and did not subside I took her to the vet. They said that everything looked good during the physical examination. They did blood work as well which came back fine. I have tried giving her different brands of dry and wet food with no success. The only thing she will even pick at is greenies cat treats.

I know she's old and it could just be related to that but it's starting to worry me because this is progressing quickly. Any advice on what I can feed her or do for her would be appreciated.

Also I am fairly new to reddit and have never posted before so please keep that in mind!

so confused… best wet & dry cat foods?

hi everyone! my bf and i are new cat parents to 2 adorable 11-week old kittens.

i’ve been going absolutely crazy with research and recommendations about the best cat foods, no matter the price, but just always end up finding something negative about an option that starts looking good.

i know fancy feast and other brands are considered low quality, but they’re also highly recommended by SO many people?

i just want to know some genuinely good recommendations that won’t end up messing up their entire system, etc. price tag isn’t a problem thankfully, so i don’t mind paying more for better food! thank you so much :)

Cats throwing up stomach bile some mornings

TLDR; 2 adult males have started throwing up stomach bile overnight sometimes. (Could be the same cat throwing up, we’re not sure) Both are close to being overweight so I’m looking for a low calorie but filling treat/food option to give them around 8pm to hopefully keep their bellies full overnight until breakfast!

I have 2 adult male littermates (turn 5 next month) who have eaten on the same schedule their whole adult life: breakfast around 7-8am and dinner around 5:30-6:30pm. In the last month or so, occasionally one of them (we’re honestly not sure who) has thrown up stomach bile sometime overnight, between dinner and breakfast. It’s not every morning, and not even dependent on whether they have an earlier dinner and a later breakfast. It only happens some days, but consistent enough for me to want to change something for them.

They each eat 1/4 cup of dry food in the morning and 1/2 a 5.5 ounce can of wet food at night, with some Greenies on top of each meal.

My dog used to have the same issue and her vet said she should have an extra snack around bedtime, so she gets an extra treat at 8pm and that has helped her. She’s always been a healthy weight.

The issue is my cats are on the line of being considered overweight, so I don’t want them eating a ton of extra calories because they’re having trouble staying full between dinner and breakfast, but of course I also don’t want them so hungry they’re throwing up. We’ve tried putting a few extra treats in with their dinner (either Temptations or Open Farm Kitty Cubes) but it only helps sometimes.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a low calorie but filling treat that I could try giving them around 8pm, when my dog gets her bedtime snack too?

is my kitten developing a preference for dry food or should i be worried?

my kitten Pixie is currently 13 weeks old. i’ve been feeding her 3 servings of Sheba wet food a day and constant access to dry food. once she’s an adult, i plan on doing 2 wet food meals a day and dry food for lunch.

she’s recently started not eating very much of her wet food and eating more dry food. she used to clear the plate every time. right now, she finishes her night time wet food but only picks at her morning and mid day wet food, which is confusing to me 😭

she’s still very active and playful, and doesn’t seem to be losing any weight (i don’t have a scale so i can’t be completely sure, but she doesn’t look/feel lighter)

she has a vet appointment for vaccines in 5 days, so i’m planning on bringing it up then, but i’m not sure if this warrants an earlier visit or not. any advice is appreciated!

Wet food with "ground meat" texture?

Hi all, hoping for some suggestions. My kitty is starting to hit an age where she's struggling to keep weight on and despite being on pred is a bit of a fussy/fickle eater who often goes "on" and "off" foods at unpredictable intervals.

She seems to really like wet foods that are a bit loose and have almost more like the texture of cooked ground beef, a little bit coarse/crumbly. She does not do well with ones that are like shreds of actual meat, either she doesn't eat them or eats them too fast without chewing properly and throws them up. Nature's Variety Instinct canned foods have been the closest I've found/her most consistent favourite and the chicken version is pretty high calorie as well which I appreciate but lately she's sticking her nose up at it/wants something different.

Any suggestions on wet foods that have this sort of texture? Bonus points if they're also high-calorie. I'm in Canada fwiw as far as brand availability goes. Thanks!

How do I explain hydrolized food diets to my parents?

So my cat has been struggling with overgrooming and itching for years now, he's been in a cone for about 2 years. a while ago the vet (after giving our cat diabetes from steriod shots) recommended trying hydrolized food. From how I understand it the way the diet works is he eats exclusively the hydrolized food for a couple months and if we don't see results then we know his itching isn't a food allergy. shortly after starting the hydrolized food diet I moved away to college and assumed my parents would continue the diet to see if it was the food allergies. I found out that they were giving him churu treats with his benadryl, which ruins the effects of the hydrolized food. I told them that and they agreed to only feed him the dry food and water. He doesn't like dry food generally, so I encouraged them to get a hydrolized wet food.

I'm back from college they have the cat on "the wet version of his dry food" which i have been feeding him. This wet food has recently been out of stock so I've been trying to find a suitable replacement so I looked up his wet food and found out it was not "the wet version of his dry food" but a novel protein style wet food made from duck meat. I never bothered to look up the food before because I took my parents at their word and I thought he was still on the hydrolized diet, but he wasn't. He was on the novel protein long enough that we know it hasn't changed his overgrooming and itching, which is nice, but also we still don't know if the hydrolized protein is effective or not because we never successfully did the diet. My dad said he and my mother talked and they're deciding to stop entirely with perscription diets and just let the cat live in the cone for the rest of his life, but I was trying to explain that we never gave the hydrolized food a proper chance and we should try a hydrolized wet food.

I don't have the money or the space to take the cat with me when I go back to college and I also don't have the money to pay for the hydrolized wet food myself, but making the cat live in discomfort for the rest of his life seems cruel. Rehoming is a possibility, but I don't know if I could convince my parents to do that (and honestly I don't know if I could do that either). I thought it might also be environmental allergies, as 2 years ago we found out a blocked off section in our attic was completely overgrown with mold and it was leaking into specifically my bedroom, where the cat spends most of his time. We hired contractors to replace that part of the house but the mold had been there the entire time the cat's lived here and he's 13 now. I know long time mold exposure messes up your body so we got air purifiers for all of the rooms he goes into, but as far as I can tell the itching isn't any better. Please, I'm so desperate for any ideas on the itching and overgrooming or advice about hydrolized food or literally anything. My cat has been miserable for so long, I hate that he has to live like this. I hate that he has to wear that stupid cone, that he's always scratching and licking himself bald and bloody. I hate that we've spent so much time and money on a bunch of dead ends.

Help with an impossible eater!

My 3-year-old Persian is the pickiest eater, it's driving me crazy! 😭 Wet food is a nightmare; she gets bored so fast. I've tried everything—broth, warming, even homemade food—nothing works! The only consistent hit is Temptations Lickable Chicken and kibble.

Any of the scents and flavors they recommend for picky cats such as fishy, krill or salmon... nope not her, she will shake her head like hell naw and walk away. But if she hears the whipped cream can, she'll be behind me staring at me like she was teleported.

Right now I'm having a hard time giving her glandex for anal gland health (tuna flavor). She refuses. I'd buy the chicken flavor for dogs but it's too expensive, just for her to hate that, too! Other than giving it to her in a syringe, is there anything I can use to mask the fish flavors? That even my cat, Captain of the picky eaters will tolerate?

Does anyone else deal with this? What are your tricks? 😩 PickiestCatProblems.

Bone found in wet cat food

I hope this is the right place to post this. Just a bit ago I gave my cat a Churu wet food and while she was eating, I noticed something off looking and pulled out a tiny bone. It’s super fragile and even broke apart while trying to pick it out/up. The end does look slightly pointy and I’ve never found a bone before so feeling slightly concerned. Has this happened to anyone else and is it safe? She’d really like to finish the other half but I don’t think so!

Brewers Yeast + Garlic…?

This was given to me on recommendation to help with my cat’s dandruff issue that she just developed. But…Isn‘t garlic toxic to cats? Why on earth would it be a primary ingredient in this product specifically for cats as well as dogs?? Is it only toxic in higher doses?

I see this has been previously discussed but I can’t really find a definitive answer, here or on the products reviews. I guess I’ll call my vet and ask, but curious to get some feedback about it here as well.
