Defensive zone strategy for wingers?
I am a winger (beer league, D level) and have a question about defensive zone strategy for wingers.
My captain likes us to be hard on the back check and contributing. I do feel like our defenders are… inconsistent, and prone to running the puck up and getting caught too deep in the offensive zone. I’m also faster than a lot of our defenders and am sometimes able to get to the defensive zone faster than them when a player on the other team has a breakaway. Once in the D-zone, I try to focus on blocking their D-man on my side, or the center if the center floats up to my quarter of the defensive zone. Occasionally I cut deeper to help along the boards if the defensemen are too far away.
Still, I feel like I occasionally end up a little deeper in the defensive zone than would be ideal and probably am losing breakaway opportunities at times.
How do you find the balance between being a helpful, defensive winger and focusing on offensive plays?
