What would you pay for this 54,500 km 2000 Mk4 Golf 2.0 manual? Seller wants $8,000 CAD
I’m looking for a cheap, reliable commuter car to use while I’m at university, and I found this 2000 Volkswagen Golf Mk4 listed for $7,999 CAD in Ontario.
Details:
- 2.0L gasoline engine
- 5-speed manual
- 54,500 km
- One owner
- Seller says it was maintained at a VW dealership
- No warning or engine lights
- Being sold as-is
- Visible rust at the bottom of both front fenders
- Dent on the rear hatch
I have heard that the 2.0L manual Mk4 drivetrain can be very reliable and inexpensive to maintain, which is what attracted me to it. The mileage is extremely low, but I understand that the car is still 26 years old and low mileage does not prevent age-related problems.
The rust concerns me because it is located where the front fenders meet the rocker panels. I know the front fenders can be replaced, but I’m worried there may be more rust underneath or behind them.
The seller is calling it “collectible,” but $8,000 CAD seems high for an as-is car with visible rust. I would only consider buying it after a pre-purchase inspection and reviewing the dealership service records, especially the timing-belt and water-pump history.
What do you think this car is realistically worth? Would this be a good university commuter, or would I be overpaying because of the low mileage? What specific Mk4 issues should I have inspected?
Thanks for any help!
