Mersi,

Andrei

How do you promote your films?

How do you, independent filmmakers, promote your upcoming/launched films? What are the main channels you found worked? what worked especially well for you? What didn't?

How do you handle subtitle translations for your films?

Curious about how indie filmmakers here deal with subtitles translations.

A few things im wondering:

  • Do you handle subtitle translations yourslef, does your distributor do it?
  • If you outsource, what are you typically paying? Per minute? Per language? Flat fee?
  • How many languages do you usually need?
  • Are you happy with the quality, or is it always a compromise between budget and accuraccy?
  • For those submitting to international festivals or platforms, do you find that bad subtitles actually hurt your retruns? are platforms translating at too high prices?

I've been working in film distribution for a few years and subtitling costs keep coming up as a pain point, especially for filmmakers working with tight budgets. Would love to hear how others are navigating this.

Brooke Shields' first movie role? She was 9 years old - and gets murdered during her First Holy Communion.

Two years before she became the most famous child model in America, and five years before she starred in Blue Lagoon, a 9-year-old Brooke Shields appeared in a low-budget horror film shot in Paterson, New Jersey.

Alice, Sweet Alice (1976) opens with young Karen (Shields) being strangled and stuffed into a bench - then set on fire - during her First Communion at a Catholic church. It happens in the first 20 minutes. The rest of the film follows the hunt for her killer, with suspicion falling on her jealous older sister Alice.

The film was released under three different titles - first as Communion, then Holy Terror, and finally Alice, Sweet Alice. It flopped on release. After Brooke Shields became a star, distributors re-released it with her face plastered on the poster, even though she's barely in the film.

Horror fans, however, consider it one of the best American slashers of the 1970s. It came out two years before Halloween. The masked-killer-in-a-yellow-raincoat imagery has been ripped off dozens of times since. And almost nobody outside the horror community has heard of it.

Fear and Desire -> Kubricks ERSTER Film.

The Blind Hitman -> Berliner Neo-Noir, Schwarz-Weiss. Ein blinder Auftragskiller. Klingt absurd, funktioniert aber. Richtig dreckige Atmosphäre.

Edelweißpiraten -> Wahre Geschichte, Kölner Jugendliche die im Zweiten Weltkrieg gegen die Nazis Widerstand geleistet haben. Keine Hollywoodversion, kein Kitsch.

Legion of Honor -> Tom Hardy in einer seiner frühen Rollen. Algerienkrieg, erinnert an Full Metal Jacket.

70 Minuten, kein Gramm Fett.

Death Rides a Horse -> Italo-Western mit Lee Van Cleef.

Bonus: To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, Anna Karenina, Hamlet, Great Expectations.

Was davon kennt ihr?
