Why are people on Reddit so rude and mean, no matter what you post or comment?

I have only been active on Reddit for a short amount of time. I had a few posts and comments and always try to be kind and compassionate. I am just sharing what has worked for me in life, school, work. I don’t offend anyone. I upvote. Yet, almost always, without fail, there are haters, with mean comments, insults, profanity. Downvoting simple comments as “Thank you for your feedback, that’s very useful”. Seriously?!?! They force me to delete my comments and leave subreddits. They immediately get upvoted! And they are there-under every comment and post, relentlessly bullying, no matter what you say.

Is this normal for Reddit? Does it happen to everyone? Are there safer, normal corners here, where you won’t get attacked and insulted? Are these people bullies in real life too or they are just braver hiding behind the keyboard?

I have never experienced anything that toxic in real life.

My husband is a functioning alcoholic. I don’t know what do anymore. Need advice.

Let me start by saying that this is just my assessment. Please tell me if I am wrong. He goes to work, he pays his bills, he never drives drunk, so on the surface everything is fine. But. He drinks every single night, from the moment he comes back from work around 6 pm to the moment he goes to bed around 11.30 pm. Most nights he doesn’t even eat dinner. Weekends are worse. He starts around lunch time and doesn’t stop until after midnight. He drinks seltzers, so on weekdays he buys a six pack and two big ones, and on the weekends you can’t even tell how many he has because it’s well into the double digits.

His father was an alcoholic but when we met 10 years ago he did not drink nearly as much or every single day. More of a social drinker. He goes through the same phases every single night and towards the end of the night he is insufferable and gets angry and is looking for a fight, so we just ignore him. He never spends time inside the house, because he is a smoker and we don’t smoke inside the house, so it’s not really that hard to avoid him. Unless he is determined to have a fight. The next day he remembers nothing and acts as if nothing happened and there was no outburst.

In the beginning he did recognize it’s becoming a problem and tried to stop-multiple times. This time is long gone. He never leaves the house, unless he is going to work or for a refill. Forget about family time, vacations or date nights. He hasn’t been on vacations with me and the kids in maybe 4 years now.

I simply don’t know what to do anymore. I believe I tried everything to help him but there is no “fixing” someone who is so deep into it, unless they want to help themselves in my opinion.

I was recently laid off from work and am absolutely mortified to kick him out but I am at a breaking point and can’t take it anymore. He has been in this cycle for going on 5 years now…

Greenhouse Bench

I am missing striped and patched flowers. Has anyone had any luck spawning new patterns from non-patterned flowers and is this possible if you don’t have the flowers that these two patterns are naturally native to? I know Petunias (from the Jam Jamboree event) are typically the ones that can be striped and Poinsettias ( from Give and Gather) are patched but I don’t have either, so not sure if the patterns are even achievable with fertilizing other flowers or I have to wait and get these two.

Why is Gori refusing to come back to my island?

Gori simply refuses to come back! I have her at level 4 when she was visiting back to back last year. Have not seen her since and she literally is holding the rest of my new/remaining MH visitors hostages. I swear she has been traveling at least 100 times since I leveled her to 4. Anyone else experiencing this? Is there any explanation? Should I upgrade her house to a mini mansion, send her an invite, get snacks 😀So frustrating!

Mercer Freshmen & Dorm Issues: What to Do When Your RA Isn’t Helping

This is NOT a post to generate negative/hateful comments or responses such as “This is college life, get used to it,” or discussions about how “useless Mercer PD or Mercer administration are”, or how “rich kids party the hardest” and so on. This post is literally about helping college parents and students. There’s no hate, negativity, or anything offensive in it. If it helps one student or parent-that’s good enough.

This IS a post intended to help parents and freshmen whose children are experiencing loud noise, disruptions after quiet hours, or have other floor/dorm concerns—particularly when these issues are not being addressed by the floor RA, or when the RA is involved or unwilling to resolve the situation.

Parents: Know the Escalation Process

If your student is dealing with residence-hall issues and their floor RA is unavailable, unhelpful, involved in the situation, or your students don‘t feel comfortable speaking with them, there is an RA on Duty who they can contact next. If the number was not provided during residence hall floor meetings, it should be posted somewhere in the residence hall.

The RA on Duty is available after 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and 24 hours a day on weekends.
The RA on Duty should be equipped to address the situation and can contact the Resident Director (RD) on duty, their direct supervisor, for backup or assistance if necessary.

Your student should also be able to contact the RD for their residence hall. Their office is typically near the entrance of the residence hall. Students can also go there to report concerns—or give positive feedback—about their RAs.

If the RD Doesn’t Handle the Situation

If, for whatever reason, the RD does not adequately address the situation, your student can go to the Office of Housing and Residence Life and ask to speak with the Area Coordinator responsible for their residence hall. The Area Coordinator supervises the RDs, who in turn supervise the RAs.

The goal here isn’t to tell students to avoid normal college life or prevent anyone from having fun. It’s simply to make sure students and parents know who to contact and how to escalate a legitimate residence-hall concern when the first level of support isn’t resolving it.

Thank you to all current and past brilliant and kind students who helped with providing all this information-you are awesome! To all parents of freshmen or young students struggling with the beginning stages of college life-don’t be afraid, you are not alone 🤗

Noise issues

My kid moved in to the dorms and there was a “party” on the floor going on for hours after 11 pm. Not speaking of some people gathered in a room. Wild screaming, running between rooms, loud laughing, etc. Imagine a Real Housewives episode x100. Housing was useless-their response was-contact the RA. It was the RA room people! And it is YOUR job to talk to them and address it! Noise complaint Mercer PD line was useless-busy signal for 1.5 hours nonstop-I hope someone doesn’t need these people for a real emergency past 10 pm. Parents/students who have experienced such issues-what do you do?! Mind you these are kids who just moved in, have busy schedules already and are alone for the first time. They are scared to report anything.

Freshman Move-In

This may or may not be helpful for move-in day next week for incoming freshmen. We moved-in today for the Trio Program which is a week in advance of regular move-in times.

  1. Absolutely be there on time. If your kid set up their Bear card you can get in the dorm-speaking about Porter, Dowell and Boone from our experience. Parking is limited and it’s the same lot for all three halls. Some dorms require an actual key card, so check your housing assignment email for details.

  2. They didn’t have plenty of moving carts, moving dollies etc. if you have one-bring it. There are students available to help and they were absolutely amazing because it took us 15 min to get everything to the second floor. They also have water coolers out 🙂

  3. Moving large bags are your best friend. Put everything you can in them, not just clothes. That was a life and space saver. We put furniture together onsite and that was a better way to go than lugging it up the stairs, full of items. You have enough time, just don’t forget your tools 😀

  4. If you have a mattress topper you do need to let it rest for a while, so you may want to unpack that and put it on the bed sooner rather than later.

  5. Clean absolutely everything in the room and take pictures of the room for future damages claims.

  6. You can absolutely rearrange furniture in the room just be mindful of the air vents and requirements for distance from them for maintenance purposes.

  7. Painters tape!!! Behind boards or posters- command strips can go on top and will not damage the walls.

  8. Hutches are great space savers and maximize space on the tiny desks. In the room there are not enough outlets, so extension cords are a must but we found out you do need a longer cables for them, so plan on 8 feet.

  9. Bug spray was recommended by the RA, blankets are a must, so is the fan and dehumidifier. Closets don’t have lights, but there are cheap magnetic motion lights on Amazon that are great.

  10. Have a last dinner with your kid even if you don’t stay the night. Also think about the impact on younger siblings-this is a hard hit on them too. Our tiny one is still crying 5 hours later..No matter if you cry in the parking lot or your kid says goodbye and heads to the room- it’s all ok. It is really hard! 0/10 recommended 😕

Good luck to all!!!

Porter Large Double Room

I can’t find any pictures or updated information about this type of rooms-the 3/3 two room apartments that share a bathroom. Anyone with experience or any information about these rooms and Porter in general? Is there sufficient space in them for 3 girls in one room, are all of them with carpet, are they still with the wooden desks or they have been replaced..all we saw is a short video on the housing website but it’s of a regular double.

Starrez

Being that starrezhousing is down/paused all day and that there is really no clear timeline of when it will be active again (next three days?) my kid who is one of the affected by this was able to talk to someone who goes to Mercer and it turns out something similar has happened before. There was overflow last year(or the year before) and some freshmen were not able to select a dorm. Wondering if anyone has more details about how this situation was resolved? Did they assign these students to singles or they were allowed to select rooms in the other buildings and how long did it take for Thai predicament to be resolved. We understand that things happen, but for a fairly small private school to even be in this situation at all is just not optimal. They know how many freshmen can be accommodated in the dorms, therefore the number of accepted freshmen should not exceed said accommodations…
