I really wanted it to be this bike

Hello all,

So yesterday I posted a question about how the Eliminator fits taller and heavier riders. I went down to the local dealer and sat on one thinking it didn’t feel too bad and they scheduled me for a test ride today. It’s such a pretty bike and I really wanted it to be compatible with my 6’2” 300lbs frame but unfortunately as soon as I got out of the parking lot I knew it wasn’t meant to be. The awkward bend in my hips almost immediately caused my back to spasm and I don’t think I got more than 100 yards away from the dealer before I turned around and brought it back.

I also test rode a 2025 Honda SCL500 that fit me much better and was very enjoyable to ride. Just got back home with the Honda and I’m very much happy with it, but man did I really want to be able to ride the Eliminator.

Considering the Eliminator as a 2nd bike

Hello all,

A little background on myself. I’ve been riding for a little over a year on a KLR 650, which I absolutely love and have no plans of getting rid of. I’ve been using it as a daily commuter but lately I’ve been thinking I’d like to have a smaller bike for riding around the city.

There are a number of bikes that I’ve been looking at, including: Triumph Bonneville, Suzuki sv650, Ninja 650, Vulcan S, Z650RS and recently the Eliminator has caught my eye.

I’m 6’2” with a 32” inseam and weight ~300lbs (but loosing weight). I’d like to hear from any taller or bigger riders how you feel this bike might work out as something to handle commuting duties. No plans of using it for two up riding and won’t likely be adding and luggage as I’d just use a backpack if I needed to transport anything.

I’ll be going to the local dealer later today to have an in person look and hopefully a test ride.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Update: was able to go in and sit on a 2025 model today. They are going to prep it for a test ride for me tomorrow. It was hard to gauge how comfortable I’d be just by sitting on it on the show room floor but I do like how wide the tank is. The test ride will be the true test

Success!!!

Thank you all for the support suggestions to help me get my front tire seated properly. I went out this morning and was pretty well ready to dismantle everything and start over but decided since one side was already seated that I’d give it one more heave ho before giving myself more work. I broke the rest of the bead on the side I’ve been battling, lubed the hell out of the wall and borrowed my step dad’s 20 year old compressor. It only took one shot and the bead was seated evenly all around.

Follow up to post about new tires

As I mentioned in my outset about putting on new tires, I was unable to get the front tire to seat completely. The tires are Pirelli Scorpion STR rallys with very stiff side walls. At the suggestion of a fellow community member I decided to not chance it and try to get that bead to seat today. After failing for a bit I opted to take it to cycle gear where they attempted and actually managed to get one side to seat fully but not the other side.

Now I’m wondering if the problem is the heavy duty inner tube I’m trying to install. I’m not sure if that is the actual issue but it’s my best guess right now. In the morning I’m going to take it apart and try again and might switch the tube out for the oem tube. Any suggestions out thoughts on how to tackle this would be appreciated.

I would take it to the ship I bought the bike from, which I did yesterday for the rear tire, but they are closed today and tomorrow and my work schedule would have me waiting until Saturday before I can take it in. I really don’t want to go that long without riding, so I’ll give the ole college try one more time

I think I’m just about done with mods

Might end up adding aux lights and a tail tidy eventually but for now I think I’m done building her up. Here’s a before and after.

Accessories are: Tusk foot peds, Tusk upper and lower crash bars, Tusk tank bag, Carpuride 602s, Doubletake mirrors, Barkbuster hand guards, Acerbis front fender, Vevor tail box, Xitomer pannier rack, Rhinowalk pannier bags, and a Wind Rider seat cover

Forgot to include the Xitomer tail rack.

New shoes on the KLR

I decided to put new tires on this weekend. Went with a Pirelli Scorpion STR Rally front and back. With the interest of doing all of my own maintenance, I opted to do the change myself. The front went in fairly easily, though I am having trouble getting the bread to fully seat. The rear tire on the other hand was a real pain on the ass to get on. I spent way too long struggling with it only to suck it up and take in to the dealer to have them mount and balance it. I’m absolutely loving the way they look on the KLR.

As for the front tire not seating, I don’t have an air compressor, only a portable electric pump. I went ahead and mounted it and rode it around the neighborhood for a few laps. I didn’t notice any discernible wobble or change in handling but I might go ahead and take it to the shop so they can seat it correctly. Either that or I’ll ride it as is and hope it’ll seat itself.

New Carpuride 602s won’t stay on via new USB

Last night I installed a 12v usb and a Carpuride 602s that I ran to the usb. Testing it out by just turning the key, both powered on just fine, with the usb reading 12.1v, and the Carpuride was working well. This morning with my first ride test, everything started ok but then about two miles into the ride the Carpuride lost power. The USB was still working, reading between 12 and 14v. Then the Carpuride began a boot loop, where it would show the start up screen then die over and over again.

I’m suspecting the cheap Amazon usb I bought is underpowering the Carpuride and this why it’s looping. All of my connections are solid and like I said the usb is maintaining power.

So now I’m exploring options to run the Carpuride off the battery but I’d still like it to be keyed power so that it turn on and off with the bike and I won’t risk parasitic drain. Does anyone here have suggestions of how I can do that?

Missing bolts for the seat

So today as I went to begin the installation of a set of B pannier racks I noticed that both of the bolts for my seat are gone. The only time I’ve removed the seat since buying the bike new a year ago was to put on the Wind Rider seat cover. I’m certain I put the bolts back on so I’m assuming I didn’t wrench them on tight enough. Who knows how long I’ve been riding without them but I’ve never noticed any wiggle or slipping of the seat. Now to see if I have any properly sized bolts to replace them with.

Day trip to Alabama Hills

Took a spontaneous 340 mile road trip to Alabama Hills, CA on Thursday. It was my first time riding Kern Canyon (way less scary than I thought it would be). Coming back home, south along the 395 and then on the eastern part of the 178, I faced some pretty strong cross winds that pushed me around a bit, but I just slowed my speed and enjoyed the ride. What a great experience!!

These longer rides I’ve been doing on the KLR have really made me appreciate this bike more and more.

Hello again everyone. Continuing from my last post about the benefits of upgrading the suspension, I have found these on Rocky Mountain’s site. Will these be good enough for now until I can splurge a little more and do the full cogent upgrade?

I’m curious, for those of you who have beefed up your suspension (front, rear, or both), is there any benefit for doing so if mostly road riding?

For context, I’m 300 lbs on a 3rd Gen. if that matters.

So I’m almost to 2500 miles on the stock tires of my “24 KLR. Based on the photos of the rear, how many more miles do you think I can get out of them?

Also, I’m kind of jonesing to put on a new set and am looking at the Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR or the Dunlop Trailmax Missions. Do any of you have opinions on either of those?
