Volunteer Victor

had a massive cottonwood taken out near previous years compost pile. Planted snow white, midnight snack, black krim and Cherokee purple in my older fenced garden. Got about 3 white/midnight and so far nothing else. By contrast, the volunteers in the back corner have produced about 9000 yellow pear and a ton of a super random red tomato that is literally the sweetest I’ve ever had. I’m seed saving the sweet one and already planning how I’ll do things differently next year.

Here is my dwarfed mammoth with a taco shaped flower head! I checked seeds and they’ve been pollinated. I’ve been growing and harvesting seeds from an original package of elderly seeds I scrounged from an abandoned house about 5 years ago. I’ve never added new varieties and I love how they cross pollinate and change every year. I ended up with soooo many varieties this year, this one was just funny to me🌻

Congratulations!i

Instead of life threatening wobbly paver hopscotch it’s now a too-shallow mulch box waiting for me to go grab some more free mulch from the community mulch pile. Zone 6a/7b Kansas. Sharing the experience that pavers are too wobbly for hopscotch so don’t try it kids!

Because this is mulch of indeterminate age it will sit empty this year and next year I’ll either install a mini tightrope, a rusty slide rescued from an abandoned school, or a super invasive non-native plant. Maybe mint…

J/k prob tickseed, fleabane, prairie flax, milkweed, bee balm, black eyed Susans, etc.

Peace and Love ❤️

Community hopscotch

I have about 1/3 acre yard and I’m slowly replacing the terrible weeds and stupid grass w a mix of hardscaping, native pollinators, and edible things. I have an almost nonexistent budget. This was free cardboard and mulch, wood stashed in my garage, and I bought some pavers and chalk. I live near a park, lots of kids (including my own) and I’ve already had numerous players! Found some free landscaping rocks online I can hopefully pick up to replace the wood this weekend. 6b/7a Kansas.

Heavy yard work

Is anyone else doing summer activities that involve serious sweating?! My hair is bottom of bra strap, 100% dye free, and overall healthy. Trying to get that waist length action lol so I’m usually good about washing sparingly…

But OMG I’ve been doing 2-3 hours of heavy yard just about every day the last 10 days (summer break for me) and I end up obviously sweaty and dirty and I would love some suggestions for protecting my hair since it def needs some sort of wash every day 😭
