Football ideas really do travel in circles: Xavi to Oranje while Barça chase Rodri

Xavi has taken the Netherlands job and basically described himself as a product of Dutch football. At the same time Barça are trying to spend serious money on Rodri, maybe the clearest modern midfielder for controlling a game.

There’s something kinda funny about that circle.

Dutch ideas helped shape Barça. Barça helped shape Xavi. Now Xavi is being hired to bring those principles back to Oranje while his old club tries to buy more control in midfield.

But how much does that identity still mean in 2026?

National-team football gives you almost no training time, and club football is way more transitional than the old tiki-taka era.

Can “control the game” still be a philosophy by itself, or does it mostly depend on having players like Rodri?

Peak Messi’s biggest compliment might be how much Mourinho had to change just for him

Khedira says in Mourinho’s Netflix doc that Madrid would spend about two minutes talking about Barça and then around 40 on Messi. Mourinho himself basically describes dealing with him as a nightmare.

That honestly says more to me than another goals graphic.

When one player makes an elite coach move Pepe into midfield, change roles and build a separate plan around stopping him, thats a different kind of respect.

And I dont even mean this as another Messi vs Ronaldo thing. Every era has players with stupid numbers.

The scarier question is: which player made top managers abandon their normal football the most?

Peak Messi has a pretty serious case.

€70m for 30-year-old Rodri sounds crazy… and also kinda reasonable

ESPN says Barça have a loose agreement on personal terms with Rodri and talks with City are ongoing, with the final package potentially reaching €70m.

If this was almost any other 30-year-old midfielder I’d probably say no chance.

But its Rodri. World Cup Golden Ball, one of the best controllers in football, and basically the exact profile Barça have been missing for years.

Then you get to the uncomfortable part: one year left on his City deal, recent injury problems, basically zero resale value if this goes wrong.

So I don’t think the question is “would Rodri improve Barça?” Obviously yes.

It’s whether one or two elite seasons are worth €70m if the physical side doesnt hold up after that.

Would you take the gamble?
