Hello, I am helping my cousin apply for ssi/ssdi but there was something he was curious about.
He is applying because of a physical disability (not related to mental health), but he also has depression and anxiety listed as conditions in his medical records.
He is not currently being treated for these, but he says that is because he is past that part of his life and that he didn't take medication for these anyways. Though he did say he tried medication at one point for about a week, but then stopped and was just treated with therapy sessions with a therapist for a couple of years (That he stopped seeing because he moved, but he eventually overcame his struggles on his own)
We are wondering if this would have any affect on his application, such as the ssa making him go through extra evaluation related to mental health, or if they deny his application until he gets treatment for these conditions (even though he is applying only for his physical disability, not anything mental health related)?
Anyone here go through something similar?
