Why do so many people dislike wearing "popular" scents?

I’ve seen so many reviews saying things like “everyone wears this” or “it’s too common now,” and I honestly don’t fully get it. I wear perfumes because I enjoy the smell, not because I need to be the only person wearing it. A lot of the fragrances people call basic are popular for a reason. I still really like Chanel Coco Mademoiselle and Dior Hypnotic Poison, even after hearing for years that they’re overused. Sometimes it feels like people in fragrance spaces pressure others into only liking niche or obscure stuff so they can seem more unique. But if something smells good and works for you, why does popularity suddenly make it worse? I also go with EM5 Vela inspired by Coco Mademoiselle. Do you avoid fragrances once they become too popular, or does that not matter to you at all?

Fragrance houses you recognize the moment you open the door

For me it’s definitely Issey Miyake and Prada. Issey Miyake fragrances always seem to share that clean watery DNA. I tried Issey Miyake fragrances years apart and still noticed the same style immediately. Same with Prada. A lot of their men’s fragrances have that soft soapy smell underneath everything. My friend recently wore Luna Rossa Carbon By Prada and instantly recognized it. Some brands are just really consistent with their scent profile across the whole line. Which fragrance house you can recognize easily?

You know you're thinking about fragrance too much when...

I realized it was getting out of hand when I started rushing through work just so I could get home and scroll through reddit and check my email. Half my passwords are perfume names now because those are the only things I remember easily. I’ve also caught myself sniffing my wrist at red lights after spraying Monarch by YSL La Nuit L’Homme before leaving the house. One time the light turned green and the guy behind me had to honk because I completely zoned out trying to figure out if the cardamom smelled stronger in the dry down. I’ve even planned trips around stores that carry niche fragrances. At this point most of my extra money goes straight into bottles I definitely don’t need. I also tried EM5 Monarch once since it’s inspired by La Nuit L’Homme. What’s the most ridiculous thing fragrance collecting has made you do?
