Something about Brianna and Roger doesn’t add up…

One thing that bothers me is that Roger and Brianna ultimately decide to live at Fraser’s Ridge after having children.

Jemmy, and especially Mandy, would arguably be better suited to the 20th century, where access to education and healthcare is much better. Mandy, as a woman, would get far fewer opportunities for independent social mobility, including the ability to pursue a meaningful career.

And it’s not just about the children. Brianna is an MIT graduate and Roger is an Oxford-educated historian/professor. They both had more opportunities for growth, independence, and autonomy. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with choosing a slower-paced life at Fraser’s Ridge, but given how passionate and ambitious they were about their respective fields, I’m surprised the characters were willing to give so much of that up.

Of course, Fraser’s Ridge is where Jamie and Claire live, and it has a degree of safety. I understand why that would be appealing to them.

But I still struggle with that decision of theirs to stay behind. Why deliberately raise your children in a world with vastly fewer educational, medical, career, and social opportunities when you can give them everything in the 20th century?

How do you wake up early?

I recently quit my corporate job and have been struggling to maintain a consistent routine now that I no longer have external structure.

My biggest issue is waking up early. I have a hard time falling asleep early, and sometimes I sleep until 1 PM. I’ve tried multiple alarms, putting my alarm across the room, keeping my curtains open for morning light, and only using my bedroom for sleep or reading. Despite all of this, I still struggle to get myself up consistently.

When I was working, I had somewhere I needed to be, so getting up wasn’t really optional. Now that I’m responsible for creating my own schedule, I’m realizing how difficult it is to hold myself accountable.

The hardest part is that sleeping through half the day makes me feel extremely unproductive and disappointed in myself. Then I feel guilty, which makes it harder to get motivated and start the things I actually want to accomplish. I feel so horrible as a person and I can’t move forward

For anyone who’s dealt with this, what actually helped you become more disciplined and get into a routine? Especially when you don’t have a job or anyone else expecting you to be up at a certain time. I feel like I’ve tried all the basic advice, so I’d love to hear what actually worked for you.
