Fasted 1K Final Tune-up

Final tune-up swim fasted for my first Olympic triathlon on Sunday. Last of 3 ramp up sessions this week. No warmup or warm down to simulate race conditions.

I got a lot of negative feedback on my training in general and my goal to win the swim outright. Still going for it.

Unfortunately, it's a two lap swim so going to have to do some dodging. Scraps my plan to gas the first 200 yds and get some clean water and may limit my backstroke in the back half of the swim which is a concern. Usually do about 10-20% backstroke.

Countdowns & Abject Failure

Anyone else buy a countdown clock to next year's 10 miles Broad Street run after getting trounced by a nemesis?

I have also calculated that my nemesis (green) is faster than me (dark blue) across every distance I care about. I need guidance on getting good.

I'm actually the slowest among every one I care about. Not crispy. I'm giving myself 12 months to fix this before quitting running forever either way.

True Beginner Swimming

Posting for a friend of mine. He is very interested in trying triathlons but has absolutely no swim background.

Think can swim one time down a 25 yd pool flailing.

He is a reasonably good athlete (sub 1:10 10 miler recently).

I'm wondering if anyone has insights on here on doing a triathlon starting from scratch with swimming. How long did it take you to feel comfortable doing a race? What did your training look like in terms of time commitment? Did you do private lessons? What was your first race distance? What would you do differently if starting again?

I come from a swim background so can't speak to this and am not close enough to him to teach him myself.

ACL Tear Rehab for 5k Goal

I don't have a torn ACL but I'm thinking about doing this pediatric ACL injury return to running program to run a sub 20 k (ideally sub 19).

I'm thinking if I run 5:30/mi pace every time it says to run then by the time I work up to a 3 mi distance, I'm basically going to run an 18 minute 5k.

Anyone has success on here in turbocharging pediatric medical PT programs for athletic performance?

First Olympic Triathlon in 7 Days!

I included photos of my YTD training. Very excited to get out there and see what I can do. Have previously done 2x sprint triathlons and 1x half Ironman but all 2023 and prior.

My goals per leg are:

  1. win the swim outright

  2. maintain 17.5 mph on the bike

  3. break 50 minutes on the run

I don't have an overall time goal as it's going to be a PR no matter what!

How to Approach First Marathon?

I am kicking around the idea of trying a marathon in the fall (or pushed to the spring if needed). However, I am severely time constrained as I have recently had my first child. I am wondering if I could get any advice or guidance from here on training in a time limited way.

I shared a decent race performance, my training, and a photo of me (middle).

Pros

-------------

- I am generally in pretty good shape (55 VO2max, 40 bpm resting heart rate).

- Ive lost 15 lbs since Oct 2025 and expect to gradually lose another 20-30 lbs over the next year (currently at 215 lbs)

- I have reasonable speed capability (5:50 or so 1 mi time)

- My heart rate was between 120-150 bmp for my 10 mi race effort above

Cons

--------

- My legs gave out during my race around mile 7 of a 10 mile race which concerns me for a longer effort

- Finished my race around 120 Bpm so it's not an aerobic thing, literally a leg fatigue issue

- I'm severely time limited only having roughly 30 minutes per day to run with maybe one 60 minute window per week which results in 2-3 mi efforts

Is it reasonable for me to try and complete a marathon in the next 6 months with a goal time of around 3:45?

How do you suggest I train for it? I'm thinking I can get my weekly mileage consistently up to 12-15 mi or so with a few weeks at 20 mi but it would be 7x 3 mi runs most likely to make it happen.

# Background

* 28 M

* 2nd 10 mile/HM (yes I'm lumping them together)

Former D1 athlete in something other than running. VO2max of 56 per my Garmin. Started running around in late 2025 instead of hooping as my post collegiate sport because I have a child and push the stroller.

Broad street was my main race for the spring as my nemesis challenged me then beat me by running sub 1:10.

# Training

Due to time constraints, I did a 9 week training block averaging 5-6 miles per week. Max distance run was 4 miles which I did once. Majority of runs were 2 miles exactly. Most runs at 7:30ish pace.

Lost 16 lbs since Oct. 2025 to get to 216 lbs and BMI of 27.0. Still considered overweight but idk about that.

# Pre-race

Woke up at 3:30 AM to deal with the logistical nightmare that was this race. Drive, subway, walk. I was in 40 F weather in a T-shirt. Not optimal.

# Race

Felt good for a while. Peed on mile 4. Legs for pretty tired after mile 7 tbh. My mile 8 kick was supposed to bring me home but lasted 0.1 mi.

# Post-race

PR. My only other time ever running more than 6 mi was to close out a half Ironman in 2023. Unfortunately, my nemesis got me this year.

Running it back next year with my average weekly mileage increased to 9 mi/week and more zone 4 vs zone 3. Planning to lose 30 lbs over the next 363 days.

Need to take it out faster because I'm going to die anyways so might as well go fast while I can.

My nemesis (left) ran a little under 1:10 in a 10 mi race and has trounced me and my 1:25ish finish. This is deeply saddening and despite my optimal pacing strategy, I was unable to succeed.

Prior to running it back and dedicating the next 365 days to victory, this calls for self-reflection.

After consideration, I intend to run mildly more per week (9 mi for multiple weeks) & mildly more per run (3 mi vs 2 mi). However, the fundamental change will be a weight loss of an additional 30 lbs over 365 days so I look more like the guys that run fast. I will also now train exclusively zone 4 and not zone 3.

I am ready to trounce my nemesis in a 10 mi showdown tomorrow. I have acquired the victory juice.

Any feedback on my fit? I intend to 5k PR then finish the race. If I say a shirt that says I can't stop then I definitely can't stop without risking dishonoring my family name. Race strategy.
