started med school and feel like im in the wrong place

I feel like an asshole for making this post because i prayed for this. i dreamt of it.

it’s nearly 11 pm. Haven’t done today’s anki. Didn’t review yesterday’s lectures. i’m sitting at my table in a state I moved to three weeks ago, alone, eating two protein waffles that taste like cardboard.

Just got off the phone with my mom, who is going through an ugly divorce with my dad. theyve been supportive, but money is so tight. + my own loans suck

I feel behind in school. Like everyone else, yes, but this shit is firing off my anxiety. Also it doesn’t help that i don’t have friends. my classmates seem to have accepted and adapted that this - grinding nonstop, a lifestyle of studying - is life. idk how. I don’t think im being neurotic.. im just genuinely behind and clueless

Barely getting time to catch a breath, cook, workout. Havent spoken to friends. Don’t have friends at school. Forget extracurriculars.. im barely keeping up with school work. Holy SHIT. what do u mean i need three or four passes of the material.

It’s been ten fcking days. TEN DAYS. I feel like im exploding. I know i need to suck it up and embrace the challenge, but holy shit i feel like im in the wrong place. am i just a mistake waiting to happen :(

advice on choosing derm and if its right for me

hello lovely derm folks! I’m an incoming MS1 at an MD med school that’s solid but definitely low ranked, no home derm program, and not a huge research institution. thus, derm will be tough (but not impossible, usually 2-3 students match derm every year historically).

for this past gap year, I was a medical assistant in allergy. in this role, a lot of what I loved is taking histories on patients with erythema, urticaria, angioedema. Also really enjoyed assisting with patch testing, generating “safe product” lists through the ACDS camp database. Getting to see people improve with biologics! Super sick.

in undergrad, I worked in STI counseling (identifying herpetic lesions, molluscum, syphilitic rash, examining for lymphadenopathy) for LGBTQ folks.

in these seemingly unrelated areas of medicine, some of the themes that emerged for me was that derm is COOL and challenging. its super cool to stare at lesions and characterize them, determine the mechanism(s), help folks navigate something affecting their quality of life.

The blend of procedures and medicine, the importance of immunology in the integumentary system, and of course the reputation as a lifestyle-friendly specialty all draw me to derm. I understand, from some posts I’ve seen in this reddit and results from the match, that derm will be very competitive. Thus, I believe it is in my interest to determine as soon as possible if this is a specialty I really hope to do (or not!).

if you have any advice that may help me narrow down my choice further, I would sincerely appreciate it!

tldr: Incoming MS1 at a school thats not conducive to matching derm. trying to figure out if this is for me before I dive in

homesickness/anxiety as an incoming student - any tips?

incredibly blessed and grateful to have been accepted. woohoo!!! just so very anxious and now getting cold feet. I did undergrad an hour away from home and am now going to move coasts for med school.

there are days when I feel so excited about the chance to meet new people and there are days, like today, when I feel absolutely mortified (im crying in an airport and being emo, I think my vitamin D levels need to get checked lol)

also afraid that I won’t make any friends in the east coast :( but im sure this is a shared fear for a lot of people

is there anything you did or brought with you either before moving or after moving to help cope?

I see a therapist here in california and am thinking of finding one in the east coast once I have a sense of schedules

some things on my list to to do:
\- bring letters/cards from my loved ones
\- maybe establish care with a therapist
\- call ppl regularly
\- try to be outgoing in the first couple weeks

incoming gay med student, questions about life in philly

hello everyone!

i’m moving from san francisco to philly for medical school and was curious how life is in philly for the gays. i understand that im coming from a very gay bubble in the world so of course some things will be different.

any recommendations for things to do for fun? love studying in cafes, live music and open mic nights, and beautiful nature. also, more practically speaking, trying to find a gay-friendly primary care physician and dermatologist - would love any recs you all have. also looking for friends!

bonus - if there are any nice single gay men who would like a (very broke but sweet) future husband, i will be on the lookout haha.

hello!!

I recently got into ducom and will be moving from california. I was looking for advice on

  1. whether to choose the west reading vs university city campus

(I like the idea of having close mentorship in west reading but am also looking for friends/a husband LMAO and not sure it’ll be as easy there as a brown gay guy)

and

  1. what housing grad/med students usually go for? dorms or apartments? whats usually the budget for a 1 bed or a studio?

thank you! and if anyone is a ducom student and would be willing to chat I would really appreciate the help! thank you :)
